New U3 U-Bahn line for Nuremberg - Germany

And a few other transit improvements too

U-3

So today I rode the U-Bahn out to the Airport and they were doing a test run of the new U-3 line. It looks like it's going to use the new fully automated cars (the ones that are all white on the inside and have the even more annoying warning chimes).

There is no news on the VGN website about the new line and it's not being listed under the U-Bahn section. The last I had heard about this was a local newspaper article from back in April saying that it was doubtful tunneling would be completed until late 2008. The line was supposed to have opened in Fall 2007 by its original plan but there is no telling how long ago those plans were made. Judging by the map below, it looks as if they were testing a run of a shorter line (which by Nuremberg naming schemes would probably end up being called U-31). The train I saw displayed Gustav-Adolf Strasse and Maxfeld as its end stations:

U-1 Extension

The U-1 line has also been extended by one more stop in Fürth. It now continues to Fürth-Hardhöhe. I'm not sure what benefit this is unless you happen to live there. In fact, as far as I can tell Hardhöhe didn't even exist on most area maps prior to January...strange. The biggest thing is that if giving people directions in Nuremberg remember that the northbound trains now read "Fürth-Hardhöhe" instead of "Fürth-Klinikum".

At present there is only one more stop planned for the U-1 line and that will be a bit further at Fürth-Kieselbühl. That's the end of the original U-1 plan made 40 years ago.

There are also increased ticket prices (yay) with a single ticket up to €1,90 from 1,50 last year. Tickets between Nuremberg and Erlangen only went up to €3,50 but you still can't purchase a return ticket between the two.

Still no official updates on the S-Bahn extension through Erlangen either but there is a nifty sign:

At any rate...

Today they were testing the U-3 again this time at Plarrer on the way to Maxplatz. I talked to a DB worker who was waiting for a train and he said that unofficially they expect the new line to open to the public in April.
