Rosenmontag in Mainz, carnival celebration - Frankfurt

Hello fellow TT-ers

Who is interested in joining me for dressing up in a silly costume and watching lots of strange people shouting "Hellau" from trailers and throwing sweets and packets of tissues at the crowds??!!

Seriously, it sounds like more fun than you think...
A few of us went to the Carnival Parade on Rosenmontag last year and had a brilliant day out! Despite the crowds, it is well-natured fun. Needless to say that a fair amount of beer is generally involved.

The parade starts about 11:00 and goes on a big long winding route through the Altstadt. After the parade has passed, people usually go to one of the many local bars for drinks which last all afternoon and well into the evening.

Fasching in Mainz is second only to the parade in Köln as being the best and most popular in Germany. Definitely a great day out!

oohh...there are pictures? I never got to see any...

um, put me down as a maybe; depends on if our office closes early etc. Last year was very,very fun but maybe a little too much. Took me a full day to recover.

on another note CM&PM (or anyone else)...some of us were talking of going to the Quartier Latin uni party on the weekend as well if you're interested? Was lots of fun last year.

Did I go last year? If I did I was probably too drunk to remember it! I know we tried to get in the year before but we didn't have tickets so perhaps we should order some this year...

How much are the tickets? I wanted to show my buddy the whole Fasching experience while he's here.

I believe that I went there with No 10 and a local well known dolphin trainer last year. Guaranteed an entertaining night out (and the chance to watch at least a few scraps by the end of the night!)

Sounds good but Monday is a work day

Is anyone going to go during the weekend? I know Monday is the biggest day, but I have no vacation days left until March A friend of mine went to Koln on Saturday last year and said it was still quite a party. And Sunday too. Maybe Mainz isn't too boring before Monday too?

Monday is the biggest day in Mainz...dunno about the other days to be honest.
Monday is a work day for me too. With the risk of stating the obvious, take a day's holiday!!!
It is definitely worth it.

A situation at work may put me in for many weekdays free from work. WOOHOO!

now this is funny... i already signed up for vacation... but i don't even remember why i did so... might as well use it to go to the parade with you guys then lol does it matter which costume we wear? i still got a witch dress somewhere...

There are no tickets. It's like Mardi Gras. You just show up and get wasted. Put me down as a maybe.

A maybe for me too CM. Will know for sure next week if I can take Monday off. Went to Koln last year, was great, took 2 days recovery time.

Cool, sounds like there are a few of us interested...plus all the folks who get a half day could join us for beers afterwards

Yeah my hubby and I are going! We have costumes that we'll be sporting as well. Would love to meet up with everyone for the parade and after drinking. I don't think we even made it to pubs after the parade last year...too much fun over the weekend and we were spent.

im interested, have to work though. So where will ye all be late afternoonish?

i think the best way to meet the fashings group would be to call someone. i doubt that anyone knows where we will end up after the parade lol

I'm definitely in, then again i live in the altstadt about 100 meters from the parade center! Monday should be amazing

...good question, I don't know Mainz at all and I'm desperately trying to memorise the map! I will probably be coming with Siobhan so I can either call you or James when we arrive. I'm planning on getting a train from Wiesbaden at around 19:30.

Hey where will you all be after the parade? I can get away from work at lunchtime, so can join you all late afternoon, how will I find you? I won't be drinking as I'll be driving, but the mood should make me drunk enough anyway.

OK guys, so this is the plan. Well sort of.
I went last year and it was packed. Anywhere in the Altstadt will be difficult to arrange as a meet-up place people because of the crowds.
The parade starts at 11:00 but, to be honest, after watching it for an hour or so it gets a bit dull. You've seen one float and you've seen them all...! And there are only so many sweets and packs of tissues you can grab!! If we get there too early then we'll just be freezing cold and miserable. The weather forecast isn't fantastic for Monday.

So, my suggestion would be meet outside Mainz Hauptbahnhof at 12:00...we'll wait around until about 12:15 for any latecomers and then we'll move on to find a place in the Altstadt (round by the cathedral somewhere) where we can watch the parade.
Then I guess about 14:00 or so we'll head for a bar. I know a few of the bar staff at the Irish Pub so that is always a back-up plan if all the other bars are full. Last year we went to the Eisgrub Brauhaus and had a brilliant time...it is always full though and can't remember what time we went there.

I would suggest anyone who is planning to meet us later on to PM me and I'll send you my mobile number. Because the whole city is crazy on Monday it is difficult to say for definite where we will end up...it will more than likely be a case of where we can get in to rather than where we choose. I will check my PMs on Monday morning before i catch the train to Mainz.

So Ferdinand and I are thinking of going to the same spot that we claimed last year. "The spot" that we were at last year was not really crowded. We've attached a map of the parade and X marks our spot. It's only a 15 min walk from HBF, a bit down from Schillerplatz. We're going to try and be there btw 11:30-12. Hey Elaleya or Chickenmadras, send me your phone number if you guys go to a different spot. We can try and meet up with you after the parade. Otherwise, hope to see you guys around our spot. Anyone else coming, let me know if you want my # or just look for the two "Wikinger" Vikings standing in the spot marked X.
