Icelanders - or Icelandic speakers in Munich

Anyone?

I'm trying to learn this beast of a language. Just looking to have a beer and chat and get corrected when I inevitably use a feminine genitive adjective with a neuter accusative noun, having counted it with a nominative plural maasculine number.

It's a fair question here; Icelanders speak English. All 280,000 of them. Except for one taxi driver on the one night I really wasn't ready to play charades...

If you find anyone to help, please let me know. My mum is Icelandic and I spent a lot of time there when I was younger. I also spent a year there around 5 years ago and studied Icelandic at the Uni, but after 4 years in Germany I can't seem to remember much. It would be great to get back into it again.
I did get a message from my Aunt a few weeks ago saying that a couple of Icelanders were coming to Munich for a year and could they contact me. As yet I haven't heard from them but I'll let you know as soon as I do.
Oddsson
As it happens, I'm Icelandic (and therefore blatantly in violation of the rules I accepted when I signed up on this forum).

There are about 30 - 40 of us who live in or around Munich. Most of us are here to attend the various universities in the area but a few are here for work or other reasons. We have a website in Icelandic but some of the pages have a German translation at the bottom.

We try to get together once or twice a month, usually on Friday evenings.

Feel free to email me, sigfus [at] oddsson.com, if you have any questions or are interested in attending one of our gatherings.

Wow I didn't know there were so many Icelanders here! I will mail you Oddsson to get more information. I'm not sure how I'd get along at a soley Icelandic speaking event as I haven't attempted to speak for five years now - much to the disgust of my relatives ;0)

BadDoggie, sorry I haven't been in touch - I just started a new job and things have been hectic. How about the Icelandic get together?
BadDoggie
Oddsson: það er okei, I just signed up for a Símon acct.

Tinna: no worries.

I know I'd have no chance at an Icelandic-only meet unless:
1) It's subtitled OR
2) You don't mind some weirdo with a very bewildered look on his face sitting there pretty quietly trying to understand you.

I'm watching the RUV news a lot, I'm getting sick of watching 101 Reykjavík over and over, and I have two textbooks. The Morgunblaðið site is damned near useless with mostly ads and very few stories and the grammar doesn't ever seem to get easier.

Still, I'd be very interested. Have you found a place with Egil's?

woof.
Oddsson
Our Friday gatherings are far from being Icelandic only. There are usually a few German friends that tag along. Furthermore, Icelanders are usually fairly (or at least semi-) fluent in English (as opposed to Germans, who claim they are but really aren't).

Some of the regular attendees are Germans with interest in our culture and language and they usually have a good time. I'd imagine that armed with a tolerance for bad pronunciation and a few Euros for beer you should be able to get along just fine!
BadDoggie
When's the next one? I have some Brennevín...

woof.

Just enquiring, since my friends Kjartan and Alisa moved away, I am missing that cute accent, do you do anything special for your get togethers?
Oddsson, on a personal note, is your father odd? I would be Marvinson, except my father hates the name Marvin. wink.gif
Oddsson
For those interested, the next Icelandic Stammtisch will be held on Hexenkessel, Schwindstrasse 20 - this Friday (Dec. 3rd) at 8 PM.

Not yet, but I can't say I'm actively searching for one. I find the local Augustiner Hell to be far superior in price and taste.

I believe I know Kjartan and (A)Lisa, I met them in the summer of 2003.

As for my father's name; it's Oddur - and yes, he can be quite odd at times.

Apparently I'm Icelandic but I never knew it. (ask Jeeves).

Would LOVE to go to Iceland though.

Not guilty your honour. That was BadDoggie, whose thread this also happens to be!
