Hy all, New to munich and to the forums. I would like to send a package home to my wife back in the states but I find myself a little nervous about using the post system. I know in the states i could go to the post office, purchase a box and pay postage and it would get shipped. Here, well my german is let's say rather weak, and I have no clue if I'll even be able to get the postal workers to understand me much less find a box and pay for shipping. To be honest I don't even know where any of the local post office might be (I live in Heimeranplatz).

Anyway if any one might be able to help alay my fears I'd greatly appreciate the advice!

Thanks
UV

They sell boxes there. Buy what you want, give them the address, then money. You don't even really have to talk.
Sin
It's really bloody easy. Just go and do it.
Keydeck
Your local post office is just a few minutes away from you on Bergmannstr. The boxes are slightly to the left as you walk into the post office.
  • Select one the appropriate size.
  • Assemble.
  • Place items inside.
  • Close box.
  • Write details on sticker provided.
  • Proceed to desk.
  • Look vacantly at post office worker.
  • Flash pearly whites
  • Pay amount requested by post office worker
  • Say "Danke"
  • Turn 180 degrees, left or right is your choice
  • Leave post office

Very polite response from Keydeck! I think I've seen it all now...someone who doesn't know how to post a parcel. Wrap it up, write an address on it and present at the counter...pay the respective money and Bob's your uncle, it'll be on it's way to the USA!
Sin
Absolutely. I'm very impressed. Almost impressed enough to start a thread seeking out exactly how I can go to the loo in Germany. I'm sure he'd know.
madgibson
Well, he could probably write a whole book by now on "How to do XYZ" after his years of invaluable advice on TT...what would they all have done without him??

Kevdeck thanks for the actual helpful response.

and I'm sorry if I wasted the rest of your time. mayhaps you don't remember when you first moved here much the first time you were away from your respective home countries. maybe you should revisit those experiences before attacking anyone.

Thanks for making a guy feel welcome. no Worries I'll not ask for any advice in the future.

Lighten up - you left yourself wide-open with your post. Of course when you move to a new country things are different but I think posting a parcel is pretty much the same anywhere -and as for finding your nearest Post Office you could have looked in a phone book, used google or simply walked around the neighbourhood until you found it.

P.S. You didn't waste my time - you gave me a laugh so something good came out of it and Keydeck gave you the answer to your question (me too for that matter).

Toytown was but a twinkle in Editor Bob's eye when I came here (nay, even Bob was a twinkle in some poor mothers's eye). Think yourself lucky you have somewhere to ask, and have an answer...
Sin
You didn't waste my time either. I was just amused, because if it had been me and they'd dropped me in the jungle in the middle of nowhere with something I had to post back to my old dear mother then I think I'd have worked it out that I have to maintain what it is exactly that I wanted to post, what the address was that I wanted to post it to, and quickly mastering how to rub noses together in the right way to ask for directions to the post office, where I should engage the post office worker in International Pointing Finger Code and the language of 'Ug!' to communicate what I wanted, and all the time while holding shiney beads under his nose. Hey! It works for me... and even with Germans. Remember, you speak English. If they don't understand then speak LOUDER!

LoL this brings me back to college!

Thank you sir can I have another!

Look I heard that the post here was difficult to understand for the first time. Apparently I was wrong and its not a big deal. I just prefer to know before I start wasting people's time.

thank you for the answers. I will not ask STUPID questions any more.

you'll be in a minority then...

Aww, go on, the stupid ones are much more fun. Besides, we might not know the answers to clever questions.

Keydeck, you forgot the part where the post office worker yells at your for not filling in either the customs declaration (Zollerklärung) or the parcel sticker (Paketschein), throws one or the other at you and you end up at the end of the very long line again.
small package up to 2kg - Päckchen, only customs declaration required
package from 2.000001kg up (we are in Germany, after all) - Paket, you have to fill in all sorts of information on a form
My tip: Weigh your package box at home, go to the post office, get the correct sticker, fill it out at home, take the box to the post office, follow Keydeck's directions.

You are all idiots. Getting anything done in Germany is just a simple matter of pulling a krout bird, and letting her take care of it. Job done, and she can pick you up some beer on her way back, and maybe some sort of sandwich. In fact, that is the only difficult bit in all of this - deciding if you want salami in your sandwich, or salami.

I want to ship a few small gifts to the United States. I cannot find a place near me. Does anyone know of a place?

If you live in Germany, go here Filial-Suche, type in your address and it'll find you the nearest post office.

Except in Germany, where it is customary to stand in the 45 minute queue that goes out of the door of Postbank and halfway towards Stuttgart.
Vivian Mackerrell
My wife did this without advice from TT and she's a woman for chrissakes...
Mariposa
What's that supposed to mean? That women are less likely to find a post office on their own?
iain
no it's means that don riina's solution would have been more challenging for her.
Vivian Mackerrell
Actually Mariposa had it.
orange.marmalade
Wow there really are a bunch of sexist a-holes here!!! Just a simple question, since I do not speak german. However, thanks for the thoughts.
Keydeck
When you're done getting your knickers in a twist over a couple of humourous comments you can click Mariposa's link and find the post office nearest to you. It's probably the one on Maria-Eich-Str. 66.

Since you didn't say where you are and your profile location says US, then how did you expect people to be able to assist? Actually, your original post is not entirely clear at all. Are you looking for a post office or somewhere to purchase small gifts?
