I doubt she cares, if winning this FHM vote means she gets more publicity and thus more chance of landing a lucrative advertising contract or another paid photo shoot in a mens' magazine.

well being a (rather lighter) woman of color myself, i would be livid if someone photo-shopped my skin shade 4 of 5 tones lighter! and sorry, it is one thing you cannot "hide". how will that help her career at all, unless of course she had a portfolio of her with looking as natural as she really is.

I agree with you totally Elf, I think it's disgusting and wrong, but as Spudbury said I also think some people don't much care what gets done to them if it helps their careers. A bit of digital skin lightening isn't much different from plastic surgery, is it? And if she'd had plastic surgery I doubt anyone would be up in arms, or even be surprised. Whether it's lighter skin, bigger boobs, smaller waist... people change their bodies all the time, and obviously models do it to help their careers. Whether it's effective or not is a different story.
What's sad is the possibility that this girl or the people around her thought she'd be more 'marketable' or whatever if she were lighter. What's even sadder is if they're right. And I hope I'm wrong about that.

Sorry, but Michael Jackson bleaches himself. As the Wiki article you posted cites, vitiligo generally causes a loss of pigmentation in certain areas and thus causes a splotchy appearance, not an all-over consistent lightening of the skin. He may well have vitiligo, but he's also bathing in Clorox.

If you prefer to discuss the intricacies of Michael Jackson's supposed skin condition, by all means go ahead, but if we're going to get off-track I reckon it should at least include hot pics of women, in keeping with true TT style. Hell, it might even be in the TT usage guidelines somewhere.

Maybe I missed something, but why is everyone jumping to the conclusion that the lighter-skinned photo of this girl is the "fake" one? Maybe she was using some skin-darkening product in YL6's pics cos she thought it looked good. Personally I think pale, "white" skin is the most unattractive skin tone - it shows up all blemishes, pimples, streaky blue veins under the skin etc etc. And if you wear bright colours they look far better against a darker skin tone. I'm "white" European, but if I could choose my skin tone on purely aesthetic considerations, I'd go for coffee or chocolate-coloured.

Because it is the professional photograph and therefore the one most likely to have been digitally or otherwise manipulated. The odds of the candid photo being manipulated, or of her putting on some sort of makeup are very slim.
QUOTE (GreenTea @ Jan 16 2008, 8:43 pm)

Personally, I think we should all learn to love and embrace who we are, whether we're pale or dark-skinned. Both are beautiful. I think that's the whole point. You saying you'd prefer to have darker skin because you find it more aesthetically pleasing isn't any sadder than those women in Mali wanting to have whiter skin for social reasons. Preferring one colour over the other is what causes those social problems in the first place!

What I meant was, if I could magically make my skin tone any colour I wanted, I'd go for a darker shade, but I can't - I don't even go in for sunbathing in a big way - so I'm happy enough with what I've got. What's sad about these women in Africa is that they are effectively mutilating themselves because they think they aren't good enough as they are. In Southern Africa the largest percentage of people practising skin lightening techniques are African women. Globally however, similar practises are employed by black Americans, Cubans, Jamaicans, Japanese and South Asians. ... In modern times, studies have indicated that the majority of black men prefer light-skinned women as partners, girlfriends or wives.
And there are also plenty of Chinese women who have their eyelids operated to look more "western". It's just sad that they seem to think they have to bow to western civilisation's ideals of beauty in that way.

It's hard to have 'civilistation' and 'beauty' in the same sentence. why do girls go on diets, adopt weird lifestyles, inject shit into their skin, whatever to look like the airbrushed alien-life forms they see idolised in magazines, even in those supposedly to be 'for girls' like Cosmopolitan. Poisonous little rags they are - on the one hand telling girls they should be more independent, whatever, then providing advice on how to get a man, on the following page a story about someone who lost 20st and was happy, then a picture of a stick like creature in a bikini next to an advertiser sponsored product that will help them become more like that, with cosmetic surgery ads a plenty in the back should it all go wrong. Without wanting to sound too tin foil hat conspiracy theorist it all seems to be a deliberate attempt to undermine the readers' self confidence for the purposes of profit.
We're born the way we are but there's a massive industry behind convincing people they really want to be something else.

In reference to (georgiagirl) comment. I know someone(female) in the U.S. who has Vitiligo. The color gradually fades from the skin and in some cases the entire body becomes pale, as in this woman and Michael Jackson's case. She brought photos for everyone to see the progression of this disease. She was also a representative for a cosmetic cream used to aid in blending the complexion. This was a traumatic time for her as I am sure it has been for Michael Jackson. She was not trying to become lighter or white. Be grateful you are not afflicted with anything comparable to this disease. Stacey is intelligent and attractive. Is this truly a reason for such harsh criticism? For whatever reason, they seem to believe she needs to look lighter for the contest. You either vote for her or not. I am sure you all mean well. When I read these posts, I see an intelligent and great group of people. Just be happy and grateful for who you are. Cheers.

The girl is competing in a semi-nude photo contest in a men's magazine. There was a very noticeable difference in the colour of her skin in the two sets of pictures that were posted. The pics were posted on a discussion forum, and a discussion followed. What's the problem? I'm not sure why people are getting so upset. I'm sure Stacey's a lovely person and nobody is criticising her personality, so no need for any defensiveness. If she is brave and self-confident enough have semi-nude pics of herself published then I am sure she's not going to be too terribly upset by any of the comments here.
And seriously... can we please all just get over Michael Jackson? He has nothing to do with this.
