It really depends on which cities you fly in and out of. Make sure to check smaller airports and other major airports that are close to your destination. When I lived in Tucson and wanted to visit family in Cincinnati, I always checked fares out of Phoenix and into Columbus, Indianapolis, Dayton, etc. A lot of the flight search engines have this ability (check surrounding airports). Try www.travelocity.com, www.expedia.com, www.orbitz.com, and www.kayak.com.
Good luck,
Ali

Alika's links are the best ones for comparing various airlines and routes.
Just like in Europe, airline fares can be widely varied, depending on where and when you want to go. My husband flies fairly frequently from Minneapolis to San Jose. This can cost $300 - $1500 round trip, depending on how far in advance he books, whether he stays over a Saturday, whether or not the moon is full ...

The best fare consolidation website today is
http://kayak.com; be sure to check the boxes for "nearby airports". From my perspective (earning dollars), flights are outrageously expensive, however, if you were to use Euros to pay for everything...

There is passable rail service between Boston, NYC, and Washington, DC. Sometimes not having to deal with airports in NY (JFK) and DC (Dulles) makes rail worth it. But not to Texas.

if you're going on a jet blue route, they might be the cheapest. i used to fly southwest quite a bit, but the last time i checked prices with them they were pretty expensive. anyway i'd check the southwest airlines and jet blue websights in addition to the other websights mentioned and look for the lowest fare.
i think i paid around 180 usd, pdx to jfk one way about a year ago on jet blue.

Southwest airlines is cheap, and their flights aren't listed on anything other than their website, so try checking there.

If you're leaving from NYC, it's kind of a pain to get to long island to board a Southwest flight--just something to keep in mind if the price difference isn't that great. I think Southwest is a lot more convenient in some of their larger hubs.
I'd agree with the others about Jet Blue. Kayak is a good site because it aggregates most of the other large travel sites. I've also had luck with cheaptickets.com

I need help. I am okay booking a direct flight from Germany to the US over the internet but can't work out how to combine an internal US flight with any of the cheap internet flight shops, nobody seems to offer "gabel flights". Is there a way to do this? I am a resident in Germany and have no US address. I have just about sourced the best connections using different sites and fear I've got to jump in the car and go to a travel agent. Any help appreciated.

Yarra-- I think most of the sites (expedia, orbitz, etc.) will let you search for 'mulit-destination' or 'multi city' flights. Is that what you are looking for?

Actually, it does pay to look around. Kayak and expedia turned out not to be the best or cheapest solutions. In fact I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the prices for the route I had selected. So in the end I did jump in the car and the travel agent has sorted me out.
