Just wanted to pop in and say hello. I'm not in Deutschland yet, but hope to be later this year.
I've always wanted to live in Germany and as I'm only getting older, 2008 is the year I'm going to make this happen. Can't just sit on my ever-widening posterior and let my dreams pass me by!
For now, I'll be a lurker and just peruse the fora, but I'm sure I will pester y'all with questions later.
Cheers,
-ansi
P.S. If anyone knows of any job openings for a computer geek girl (Mac/Windows/*nix/networking/security/QA) with 5 years of German language studies, let me know. I bake cookies too. :)
Welcome ansi and good luck finding a
job.

You could try the
European Patent Office. Check their job section sporadically. Otherwise big companies like Siemens, BMW, Allianz.
Which part of Germany did you want to go to?

So why Germany Ainsi? Why have you always wanted to come to Germany? What do you know or what have you heard?

Switch "live" for "leave" and we are on exactly the same wavelength sweetie.
Come on - its not THAT bad here - you are roping in the money with your Vellness business. You could be back in UK selling bras again!

It's OK here. I just loooooooooooooove moaning about it. Just did something else today which pours even more concrete around my boots, so I am never gonna escape!
Funnily enough I have a flight booked to the UK for 24th to 27th of this month - it was a an old ticket booked ahead. But I'm just gonna not bother going 'cos I really
don't need the aggro of a trip to the UK. I will be more chilled staying here for the weekend.
We got tickets to go over for a short trip early May to see Steeleye Span in concert. Got the first seats at that particular venue...

Doesn't the EPO only employ European nationals?

The unique thing about the Toytown community in Germany, is that you said hello and it was returned. Don't get used to it.

Yorkshire Lad - Ah, I didn't see she was from the US. So yes, unless you own a passport from one of the EPC member or future states, I'm afraid it's not an option.

Wow, thank you all so much for the warm welcome and helpful tips. :)
To answer some questions, I'm open to living pretty much anywhere as long as there is a train station that gives easy access to a large-ish city or two. I'm drawn more to the northern cities (Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen, etc.) but that is partly because I've never met a beer I've liked and the southern areas seem to have more of a beer emphasis. But perhaps TT is giving a slightly skewed picture? ;) (My heritage is Belgian too. How can I not like beer?!?) Hmmm, can you get tequila at Oktoberfest?
@turasteanga: I know nothinks! *shifts eyes* Actually, as to why Germany, I can't explain it. I started taking German at 13 because I wanted to live there. I suppose with the help of a good shrink I could figure out why but that seems like a bit of a bother. Maybe it was all the Kraftwerk? ;)
Again, thanks everyone!

I lived in Munich for 5 years and I don't drink beer, so it is possible! Alternatives are wine, cocktails, spirits etc.. pretty much the same as anywhere else. Oktoberfest time I would drink Sekt (sparkling white wine) .. don't think they have tequila in the beerhalls. Oktoberfest is only once a year though

If your heritage is Belgian, would you also choose the North of Germany because you plan on travelling to Belgium regularly?
Also, it depends on your interests.. what do you want from your hometown? Open air sports, or cosy cafes or arty places?

It's probably only a matter of time before the US will join the EU.

@UrbanAngel: wow, another non-beer drinker! I don't feel so alone in the world anymore. :) Thanks for the Sekt at Oktoberfest tip. I'll be in Munich in September, so I'll definitely use it. (My latest cocktail concoction is the "Fuck-It-All" which is Sekt & tequila. Yum!)
You ask some very good questions. Cozy cafes would be great. I'm not particularly into visual arty things. I'd like to go out dancing at clubs (industrial, techno, goth, usw.) so somewhere with an energetic but not pretentious nightlife would be fantastic. I absolutely don't want to have a car while there & enjoy bike riding & hiking but I'm not a sun-worshipper. The ability to easily hop on a train & be in a different country in 3-6 hours would be ideal.
I feel like I'm shaking up a "What German-city should you move to?" magic 8-ball. :)
I am doing a bunch of research myself on TT & elsewhere, but I do appreciate all your thoughts.

Hello, TT folks,
My dream to move to Germany is finally getting realized.
I Love Germany and I need help practicing the little german I've learnt so far with Rosetta Stone software.
Thanks
