Life in the town of Mittenwald - Germany

Info, advice, and experiences
liutaia
I'm hoping to be moving to Mittenwald at the end of the summer, and know absolutely nothing about it. okay, I know the important things, like it has an awesome school for luthery, but beyond that, I confess to finding myself without a clue. What is there to do there? is anyone on this site living thereabouts? how does one go about finding accommodations there? If there does happen to be anyone from this site attending the school, I'd love to hear from you!
Thanks!

Handy for Austria?

Worked in a hotel 10km north of Mittenwald 26 years ago in a hotel called " Schloss Elmau". Mittenwald is the iconic Alps venue. Just great views with mountains .There is an international school in "Freising" for "English" but about 2 Hours north of Mittenwald. Mittenwald is close too Innsbruck, Austria.

@Blackadder: where's Freising?

Oh!!! if you need a violin Mittenwald is just the place, hand made, not by me though (I wish). A quaint small town with big hand painted pictures on the outside walls of the houses. If you can get a job then go!!! . "Skiing Mecca" but no industry . Nearest American base was in "Garmish partenkirchen" 20 km west of Mittenwald (26 Years ago)

What is "luthery?" You mean "luthiery," right? Making violins and other stringed instruments?

Well, if that's what you're going to Mittenwald to learn, I don't think you'll be disappointed. You should get great training in beautiful surroundings.

It's a pretty small town, though, and it probably won't take you long to run through the available entertainments. With luck, the school will keep you busy. Can the school help you find accommodations?

It won't be difficult for you to get to Munich by train for shopping or other activities on weekends.

Full of nazis though isn't it?
Sorry, "an Alpine town well known for its love of tradition".

What???

Um, get a dictionary?

I generally like to look up words I don't know, and "luthery" sounded like some kind of convent for Protestants, which it was kind of intriguing to imagine in that area.

Unfortunately, there is no such word, but "luthiery" seemed like a pretty likely match for Mittenwald.

Bring your snow gear. I took these photos while skiing near Mittenwald in February of 2003.

Luthery, luthiery, same thing. I learned luthery, but really, in english, it's often best just to say violinmaking, as it doesn't send as many people running for their dictionaries... oh, hindsight...

Well, I play a stringed instrument and didn't know the word. Maybe it'll come in handy on a crossword or for scrabble sometime! wink.gif

I certainly don't mind learning a new word, anyway.

Its a gorgeous touristy town in the countryside, surrounded by mountains and lots of nature. Very traditional and picturesque, but I can imagine there's not a huge amount of nightlife. We visited the violin-making museum there, the craft goes back a long way in that area and seems to be still very important. I'd say its a gorgeous place to spend some time, especially if you know its not forever. If you want to learn about violin-making, I can't imagine a nicer place to be. You will probably learn quite a lot given that's what the place is famous for.

Haven't a clue how you would find accommodation, but you could try contacting the school or the local tourist office to ask. If you find out what the local newspaper is, you could also place an ad in it.

Mittenwald is a great quiet town. I was able to spend a few weeks there 2 years ago and had a great time. It is fairly quiet so if you are looking for night life, it isn't your place. The hiking, mountain biking, and just relaxing there is great. There isn't a whole lot of industry around there but I want to wish you good luck in finding a job. It is close to Innsbruck, which is a nice college town. Close to Munich, so you could go when needed.

Garmisch is about 20 minutes away and there's a US military studies center there and according to the town's website there are several night clubs and other things worth checking out. http://www.garmisch-partenkirchen.de/en/db...cc9b4d45f6.html
I'm moving there next month from the US.
