Hi All,

I currently work as an intern for BMW and I get paid 880 euro a month, since my internship is a pflichtpraktikum I don think i am covered by the BMW insurance . In fact I have no idea if I have any health insurance cover at all except the one I have from UHC in the US. The last couple of days I have been really ill and I am looking to visit a doctor. Given my situation I have the following questions

1. Is there a way to get a cheap health insurance from any provider for just one month since I will be leaving Germany in 2 weeks? If not then is paying out of my pocket going to be very expensive ?

2. Can I claim the charges in the US? I have health insurance coverage form United Health Care in the US.

3. Any other recommendations on getting treatment quickly and cheaply would also be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for all your help guys!

So you are sick now, and will leave Germany in 2 weeks time. You want to take out health insurance now (as in: today), to be covered for your upcoming doctor's visits during the next few days. Is that it? If so, you can't possibly be serious! blink.gif

What kind of illness are you talking about anyway? Do you have the flu and want the doctor to prescribe you antibiotics? Or is it something that might require more elaborate treatment? unsure.gif

I agree with tom_a : if you think you can sign up now for a small premium amount in order to make an insurance pay for a major treatment of a current and existing health problem, you have severely misunderstood the functioning of insurances. No insurance will cover an existing ailment/health condition.
To be quite frankly: I do not understand how you can work even as an intern without any form of health insurance. Or did you just sign up on a travel insurance when coming to Germany? In that case you need to check with the travel insurance if the treatment you seek/need is covered there as a form of emergency treatment or the likes.

If you have an US health insurance you need to check with the insurance if they offer some coverage while abroad. This is different from policy to policy depending on the agreed upon coverage and nobody except the insurance itself will be able to tell you if you have some form of coverage here in Germany or any other place outside the US. When you are back in the US this insurance should cover any in-country treatment unless it is an ailment or condition excluded from your coverage contract.

Sorry mate, but it looks to me as if you did not pay any attention to your health insurance before leaving home for the internship and if you go to a German doctor now you will have to pay out of pocket and see later if your insurance covers that.

If it is simply a flue or something like that, though, the costs will not be too bad but only a doctor will be able to tell you and you should inquire about costs when going there in order to be spared some seriously bad surprise.

Cheerio
