I havent used this service extensively, but just wondering if there are any other TT'ers around, who use this service? ...And also, i wanna ask if TT supports this openId service?

Please list out the advantages and disadvantages, if you know any?

OpenID eliminates the need for multiple usernames across different websites, simplifying your online experience.

You get to choose the OpenID Provider that best meets your needs and most importantly that you trust. At the same time, your OpenID can stay with you, no matter which Provider you move to. And best of all, the OpenID technology is not proprietary and is completely free.

For businesses, this means a lower cost of password and account management, while drawing new web traffic. OpenID lowers user frustration by letting users have control of their login.

1 if your OpenID Account is hacked, or the openID providers servers are hacked, then sombody get access to all your protected logins/passwords/sites.
2. Sounds like yet another way to get ads or spam to users. Do you really think companies are going to run these servers/services for free?

Those are just the 2 things that came to me first.. I'm sure there are other issues.

It's much easier and secure to store your login names/passwords in a program like Keepass

You are very right about that. smile.gif Indeed, i never stored my good credentials on that provider site (Verisign, although its a famous security firm), but just tested that with my not-so-properly-used internet credentials.

I use OpenID for commenting on Blogger blogs. I use LiveJournal as the provider for my OpenID because I have had an account there for over six years anyway so that I do not have to comment anonymously.

What's the point of that? 99% of the fun on Blogger and LiveJournal is going on there and winding people up with troll comments posted anonymously. Or is that just me?

But on a serious note. It would be nice to have a single ID to log into all services like GMail, LinkedIn, Xing, Facebook, etc. Assuming they really can be trusted and they're not going to sell you out. I imagine there's a lot of money to be made from being able to link all those aspects of a person's online life.

I use LiveJournal as the provider

I would prefer veriSign as it is famous for security software and also for its part in SSL and cryptography. We indeed have the privacy rights with any provider, but who knows how safe the data protection is? We think using Google and all its tools, etc is safe. But is that safe and well assured of our privacy and free speech on the internet? ...I dont think so..It also depends on so many rules and regulations according to a particular country and many other factors.

It depends on the blog provider. Some blogs have effective comment tracking and some dont permit comments without logging in and some have anti-spamming software (like AKismet for wordpress) for controlling the comments.

It aint possible (maybe with a new software creation. Something like openId which has a single ID and password and it has data which is mapped to other services). Providing services with a single id as you said is something like countries without borders/conflicts.

All I know is I already had my account at LJ so why create a new one somewhere else? Once you're signed up for LJ you automatically get an OpenID. And OpenID was actually developed by the same person as LiveJournal (Brad Fitzpatrick). smile.gif
