El Chango Steakhouse in Cologne

Restaurant recommendation for great steaks

I highly recommend El Chango in central Cologne if you are in the mood for a great steak. This place was recommended by a local we met in an Irish pub, it is did not disappoint. My mom and I had a great meal!

For a starter we had this amazing garlicky shrimp thing- I can't remember the name, but it is at the top of the right page of vorspeisen. For entrees, we both had the Filet Mignon and shared a few sides (baked potato and spinach). There are several sauces you can add to your steak (bernaise, gorganzola, peppercorn, etc.), but I have to recommend you not add one!! The steak is so perfect and juicy (they do a great medium-rare), that it would be a shame to drench it in sauce smile.gif Really, it was incredible. One of the best steaks I've had.

I cannot say much for the service unfortunately. We were sitting upstairs and the waiter was swamped, so the service was lacking, even for german standards. Also, do not try the Sangria...unless you like your sangria to be diluted with a lot of fruit juice (and no fresh fruit!).

Reservations recommended.

Did you have to mortgage your house to pay for it? I've never had decent beef in this fair land without spending a fortune on it.

I think we spent 20 yoyo on each steak. Sides were ranging 3-6 yoyos. Not cheap, but it was a special occasion...so my mom treated me, her only child smile.gif

p.s. timmeh, you should have been at my house last week when I made a goat cheese and herb-crusted beef tenderloin with a madeira sauce. That was equally lush.
