Hello. Does anyone out there have rental insurance? We are renting a house and have two dogs. We were advised to get rental insurance to cover any damages that we or our dogs may cause. We have property insurance through Clements (covers our stuff during transport and at post). I don't know if it will cover any damages say if we were to accidently burn down the house (extreme example, i know). The military folks use USAA - but we don't qualify for that.
Does anyone have any other recommendations?

thanks

Nordvers is the apartment insurance that I use. It's a very smart decision to get insurance. Good luck.

I am going through this now. I was recommended to Stockhausen und Partner in Berlin (where I live).

They are the rep using what appears to be Dema and Gothaer.

I have not advanced to the stage of getting competitive quotes etc...but if you want the contact info let me know. I will send it over.

I don't know how good or bad they are yet so like anything new, it has a risk.

Regards,

J

Just another quick question.

I found out that the insurance I have now is like renters insurance in the states. It covers our personal property and personal liability ( if someone were to get hurt in our house).
It is up to the landlord to cover building and fire insuance for the rental.

Now, is it different in Germany? The realtor I was dealing with advised me to get coverage in case my pets damage the property or if I were to cause a fire by accident.
Wouldn't the landords insurance cover the fire part? I know in our rental contract the landlord is to provide building insurance/fire insurance.

Our insurance is through Clements who provide international insurance for expats and State Dept. We have never had a problem with them and they have settled our claims quickly and without question (for property damaged in moves).

Thanks.

travelingpac: your are talking about two different insurances here because the German system is a bit different:
1) there is an insurance which covers all the contents, valuables and property in your rented place against theft, vandalism or destruction by water, fire and so on. This is often called a renter's insurance or tenant content insurance. This insurance is called in German HAUSRAT Versicherung. It does NOT cover damage that you, a family member or the dogs would cause to another person's property or bodily injury. The premium for this insurance is depending on size of rented place in squaremeter, area/region of the place and total of property valuable. Usually the value is computed by insurances as a rule-of-the-thumb at 650.- EUr per squaremeter.
2) the insurance covering damages caused by you, family members or dogs to other people's property or bodily injury is a third party liability insurance or in GErman PRIVATE HAFTPFLICHT VERSICHERUNG. This is actually next to good health insurance the most important insurance for anyone. For you and the family the costs will be around 80-120 EUR/year, the dogs will come extra and the premium will be depending on size and race of dogs.

the landlord insures the building against fire and damages. you don't have to take care of that (but you will be charged a share of these costs through your "Hausgeld" or "Wohngeld" indirectly.

you should take the services of an independent broker in order to find the best solution for you. Otherwise and if your German is up to it, try to check the independent consumer protection magazin FINANZTEST in order to find an insurance where you get your money's worth of protection and coverage and which has a good track record for claim settlment.

Cheerio and good luck,
