Hi there,

I havent posted anything to the forum yet but have been a advertant reader of the various topics here. I had been looking for english speakers meetups and have come across the International Hamburg English speaker meet up group. they meet once a month in McLean's. Has anyone been to this event?

I've gone a few times, but not for a while. There is a wide range of ages and backgrounds, and the venue is set up so that mingling is easy, so you're not stuck sitting wedged into a corner all evening. You can figure on about 25 to 30 people showing up.

I've been there once with my (English) partner (I'm German).
We both had the feeling it was a bit like a meat market, think we were pretty much the only couple there.
But that's just our personal experience, maybe we should give it another go, it's been a while smile.gif

Wow, you're kidding, right? A meat market? I must be totally clueless, so out of the market I didn't notice, or the people going have changed a lot since the last time and maybe I should go there too again. Last time I was there I hung out, BS'd with a few people I knew already, some I didn't, had a few beers, walked home. I didn't get the impression everyone was hoping to sleep with someone eventually.

At least it wasn't cliquey - you can say hello to people and not get the impression that since you don't go there all the time, you don't really belong.

Kidding? Me? Don't know how that works. wink.gif
OK, seriously - that was our impression. But as I said, we've only been there once.
And maybe we should define meat market. For me that means people who are looking for a partner (relationship, one-night-stand, whatever) rather than just people to hang out with.
I'm not exactly a shy person, but I found it a bit difficult to get to know people - maybe because most of them had been there a few times already and were rather mingling with the people they already knew? I'Ve been at other meetings where I found it easier to get to know people.
Anyway, think we will give it another go at some point.

Ok, it sounds like I'm having a go at this meet up. I'm usually not that shy either and since I'm back from Scotland ( lived there for 6 years) I met soooooo many new people here. I'm sure it'll be fun.

@Hammonia: To which other meet ups have you been? Any of them recommendable?

Nothing really regular but Mat and I organized some meetups (of course recommendable wink.gif ), have been in Munich for the Octoberfest North-South summit (veeeery recommendable) and we've been to a meetup organized by the British Club in Hamburg (definitely too stiff for our liking). We've also been to the bookswapping club a few times (very recommendable)
We were going to organize another meetup sometime soon, we just have to find the time... wink.gif. The first meetups we organized were quite nice, but back then there were still a lot of Mat's workmates (airbus) in Hamburg, so many of the people knew each other already. In the meantime many of them have left, and the one or two times we just informed on Toytown we were going to be at pub x at day y around z p.m. there were not really many people showing up.

Last meetup at Marinehof was quite nice though.

In October/November there were quite a few people posting about spontaneous meetups, seemed to be a nice crowd, but we could never actually make it to one of the meetings.

wiefr, which International Group did you go to in the end, how was it?
