Thai food is acceptable in Berlin so far. But I have yet to find any decent Vietnamese, Chinese or Indian food in Berlin or Germany in general. Is this the same situation for everyone else here? I am curious to know why. I been to 10 Vietnamese Restaurants and 4 Chinese ones in Berlin. 1 Vietnamese restaurant in Munich...not one was really authentic.

If anyone is from Houston, or Los Angeles or San Francisco, or New York...you know what I am talking about. I mean when you go into an Asian restaurant in the right places in those cities, you know from the smell of the spices that they don't pull their punches for people who don't know how to eat such foods.

Some of the Turkish, Lebanese and Arabic places have been decent though.

Thanks.

which vietnamese ones did you test?
don't know if they are authentic (don't care about that if the dishes are well), but Com Viet (Münzstraße) and De Nhat (Auguststraße) are great. at least for me. Indian is really difficult! Try namaskar in wilmersdorf. chinese food? the only really good and authentic one i know is Tian Fu at Uhlandstraße.
In general it shouldn't be a problem to find good vietnamese restaurant cause there are many vietnamese immigrants in Berlin. The problem is, that most of them didn't care cooking vietnamese because about 10 years ago the german people wanted to eat thai-food. Monsieur Vuong was one of the first cooking vietnamese again (about seven years ago). Since then it's getting better slowly.

I've been happy with my experiences at Monsieur Vuong and Good Morning Vietnam. Maybe you've only been looking in the West?

For Vietnamese I like Via He, in Heimstrasse, just off of Bergmannstr. Very small and casual but the food is great in my opinion.

Haven't had good Asian food (being Thai & Chinese) since I've been here...all they seem to do is offer you between 8 to 13 sauces, with the meat interchangeable. How can the food be so different from my locals back home, i mean, the restaurant owners all come from their respective countries right??? Is it possible to buy lemon chicken anywhere??? Or Peking duck wraps without having to order a whole duck meal a day in advance?

Add "My Hanoi" on Rosenthaler Strasse to the list of good Vietnamese.

Many Asian restaurants - Thai in particular - dumb down the food to what they think will appeal to German taste. For Thai food though, Mao Thai in Prenzlauer Berg and its sister Kamala on Oranienburger Strasse don't dial it back (much) and could pass muster in Bangkok if not Khorat. If I had any restaurant skills, I'd open a joint called "Isaan" - and probably flop miserably.

Has anyone found a real good high-octane somtam in Berlin? A few weeks ago, a down and dirty local eatery beside the main highway on the Thai island of Koh Lanta served me one freshly made just for me, with the waitress/cook saying proudly "Not spicy." Damned German tourists are globalizing dumbed-down food. ;-(

I have found a small little Asian eatery on Voigtstrasse. Of course it's not so PURE like home.
I'm a Chinese Malaysian and I DO find the food there pretty good.
The cook is from Laos and his wife is from China. I'd have to say that some of the meals do remind me very much of South East Asian Chinese food...
alika
What is it called?
billp
It probably doesn't have a name. That's Voigtstrasse in Friedrichshain, I presume? What corner is it near? Is the food anything like what's to be found on Jalan Alor?
TobyG.
If it's the "Thai-China-Bistro", Voigtstraße 42 (near Frankfurter Allee), you're talking about: To me this one is just another mediocre asia-imbiss. Maybe because I'm not asian or because I don't know the cook. Or you're talking about another one, but at least I know no other Asia snackbar there (if it is the Voigstraße in Friedrichshain...)

In Freidrichshain: Papaya in Krossener Str 11 is an exceptionally good Thai. Always full and reservations recommended.
fudduf
sorry, i can't agree with you here. i've been there quite a few times and i find it decent but not exceptional. i think i will have to break down and try Mao Thai eventually because i have not found anything that great here yet.

DAO, Kanstr. 133, is said to be a very good and nearly authentical Thai restaurant. Never been there though, cause it's too far away from Friedrichshain for me.

#12 Go to Kamala instead of Mao Thai. Not as fancy decor or expensive, but the cooking is just as good (same owners - Thai or Lao professional cooks). Be sure to tell them "Ao phet phet" if you want it spicy, since many people here want it dumbed down!

yeah there are loads of oriental places around the kantstrasse/savigny platz areas.. not sure as to how 'authentic' they are as i really wouldnt know, but it could be a good area to explore if you have not already done so.

There are several good options for "asian" food in Berlin, sadly not enough. In addition to what has already been suggested the following are recommended:
1. Good Friends Kantstr. 30 10623 Berlin (Charlottenburg) - Considered one of the best Chinese restaurants in Berlin. The food is traditional and from my experience bringing Chinese colleagues there, quiet good.
2. There is a Chinese restaurant across the street from the Chinese embassy in Jannovizbruecke. It does not look like much, but the food there is great.

Also, as far as Thai food goes Good Time in Chausseestr. 1 is a great restaurant.

Eat well

Went to Good Friends on a recent trip to Berlin --- while the food was good, it was awfully pricey. I had their dim sum: most dishes had two pieces for about 3.50. That's quite expensive!
yes
For Indian, try "Calcutta" Bleibtreustraße 17 or "Amrit" Oranienstraße 202/Oranienburger Straße 45

I was in a book store and happened to peruse a book entitled Best Restaurants in Berlin and Pan Asia restaurant piqued my interest. The next time I'm in Berlin I will check Pan Asia out. Has anyone been here before?

Review from Expatica:

Pan Asia

Rosenthaler Str. 38
10178 Berlin

S-Bahn Hackescher Markt
One of a wave of fashionable Asian restaurants that have opened in the last few years in Berlin, Pan Asia stands out due to its excellent location and well-designed interior (the toilets are especially elegant, although their lack of clear labelling means you may be confused as to which one you should be entering). The food can be patchy, but the Mitte hipsters who frequent the place are probably more worried about their sneakers than their sushi.

Having had lived in India for almost a decade, going to Indian Restaurants in Berlin, was for me a definitely unpleasant surprise. At times, utterly disappointing experience.
One of them being: overly-ornate-Amrit in Oranienstraße.Its a definite No no!!

One Indian place that serves a different ( from the usual stale bread) kinda Indian fare is Satyam on Goethestrasse, Savignyplatz. The food is not bad (for an Indian) and the prices are great. It's only vegetarian food but has some interesting stuff like yam, lotus root, etc. As far as I know the only Indian restaurant in Berlin which serves South Indian fare ( the real Indian food, if anyone knows what I'm talking). Try their Paneer Masala Dosa ( Its potatoes and Indian cottage cheese sauteed with onions stuffed inside what I can term only as an Indian crepe). Again if anyone wants just spicy ( hot) food, skip this place.

Calcutta is actually recommended by several Indian acquaintances who have tried many Indian restaurants all over the world.

As for Amrit, I agree with you that the atmosphere and service is pretty bad.

Thanks for naming a South Indian Resturant in Berlin.
Though, Dosa, Uttapam with other banana and coconut stuffed South Indian delicacies are but a few selection in the wide spectrum of Indian Gastronomy.Unfortunately, Berlin seems not to be the place to savor these.
TobyG.
Pan Asia is sort of a tourist trap. The food is ok to good (not much more), but it's overpriced and the service is usually rather bad. Amrit is not too bad, but it's definitely NOT an asian restaurant wink.gif

My favourite Indian is Guru near Südstern (Körtestraße 30). Feels like any other slightly scuzzy Indian imbiss, but the food is really good. Nice desserts too cool.gif

The best Vietnamese I've tasted in Berlin is Hamy Cafe nr Hermannplatz (Hasenheide 10). Cheap, hectic and delicious!

For sushi I go to Ishin. They have 4 restaurants here in Berlin, 2 in Steglitz, one near Friedrichstraße station, the other near Güntzelstraße station. www.ishin.de

5 flavor, torstraße 127 is authentic chinese (sichuan) food. they have also the typical european "chinese" (and thai) stuff, but also a wide variety of original chinese dishes.

I sampled some delicacies couple of days back.Yes, -it definitely deserves kudos for "South Indian" food.
