Giving money to charity as a Christmas gift

Recommended charities, preferably tax deductable

Instead of the usual gift for my parents I'd like to give money to some charity (preferably one that works in Third World countries) on their behalf.
Is there some such organization in Germany that would send the recipient of the gift some form of certificate/proof/quarterly news/whatever, so that the gift would not be completely virtual?

thanks,
Ivan

Terre des Hommes, my favorite. I used to do volunteer work for them, they send you a tax deductable confirmation and a newsletter every three months or so.

Herz HD Stiftung - they've always sent nice cards for me, and for a couple of larger gifts sent a small stone carving with the card explaining the donation and their work. I'm pretty cynical about charities, so I view it as a nice plus that it's pretty much a one-couple operation, they do the work themselves, and they sure as heck don't need the money to live on or spend at the ballet - they give more themselves than comes in. (Fair disclosure - I knew one of their offspring in the u.s.)

Any time a present is "expected," I do good-cause stuff.

Another option I've used quite a bit when the gift-grabber is a child is Animals Angels. Again, b/c I knew one of the organizers.

Misereor ... Brot für die Welt

Thanks all for the suggestions. In the end I went for Brot für die Welt, but I plan to donate to the other charities as well in the future.
