I haven't been to the Staatstheater for sometime. They're a lot cheaper than Frankfurt (decent tix for 25-35 Euro). They stick pretty much with the standard repertoire and the productions usually aren't too far out in left field.
Anyway, I see there are still some tix available for La Traviata on 03 Jan, La Boheme on 06 Jan, and Tosca on 16 Jan

I would be interested in going to see Tosca...

Dec 18 2007, 3:28 pm
I'd like to go to either one, haven't been to the opera in ages!
@Ril:Maybe this could be our fancy night out!

Dec 18 2007, 3:31 pm
that's what I thought when I saw it. Would be a good opportunity.
I can't do the 3rd or 6th though as we will be in the process of moving...16th is a Wednesday though...so I'll finish work just in time to get to the Opera, however we can go out for drinks and stuff after the show!?

Do people here dress for the opera?
In NYC (or any other venue I have been too they do!)
It sounds like a night in the making!

I've never been to the opera here, so am not sure. But WE can
I'm not sure re bars, will check out what bars they have in Wiesbaden, I'm sure there'll be something nice...

Wiesbaden is not overly formal unless it's an opening night. Frankfurt is a lot more formal (and a lot more blue-haired). I'd say "smartly" to sort of "cocktail number" is about right but certainly not any kind of gown. I have seen students there in jeans. Gents should be dressed smartly but ties are not necessary.

Oh darn...I guess my Scarlett O'Hara ball gown will have to sit out yet another occasion.
It's sounds like a deal then. I know nothing about Weedsbaden, although I think I went there for sushi ages ago. The sake erased my memory.
Hopefully a bunch of us can go! "no fools=no fun" "more fools=more fun!"

This sounds like a great idea!Count me in as long as its not the first week of the year or the 11th. I am always looking for a reason to get dressed up.

I mentioned to hubs about the possibility of "opera night"...he says "opera? what's that?!"
So yes, please let me know a time and date...we will be there!

I looked at the online ticketing y'day and you could still get six seats together for Tosca in the €32 range. Suggest we give it a couple more days and try to scare up some more interested parties...nice mix of boys and girls if possible. Then I can list the available seats here and each person can book their own ticket more or less simultaneously.

Sigh. Opera. Not Tosca, though. Plus, Dan's trying to rattle up men so he doesn't look like ... , so I'd have to go in drag, which I don't presently fancy.
Maybe I should treat myself to a weekend in Houston.

Hi, I would love to join. I have a dress that has never been worn ... and I haven´t done anything cultural in a while.

Now I have to go read up on Tosca...I have been out of the opera loop for a while!

Just got back from vacation. Caught a couple of broadway shows while in NYC, but haven't been to the opera in a while. I'm in if this is still being planned.

Headcount please... Reckon we should look at booking tomorrow before the tickets start going. As of this evening there were still at least six contiguous seats available in the "C" class. Obviously everyone doesn't have to sit together so some might choose to book higher or lower classes.
So who's still in?

I am still trying to twist my other half's arm into going!
Are we going to meet before or after for drinks/dinner?
Is anyone else thinking about a semi-nosebleed seat in G? If I pick a cheap seat he will be more willing to go...

OK, where have our culture vultures disappeared to? Went from 7-8 to only three. If anyone else is stilll interested, send me a mail today.

Well that was remarkable timing. I don't think anyone's worried about taking nosebleed seats. It's a very small theatre and as long as you're not behind a column, you're good to go. There's a reception hall where they serve refreshments including wine and snacks which is a good place to meet before the show. If nothing else you can grab a laugen bretzel there.
Pic of reception hall here:

Jan 9 2008, 6:59 pm
Hi, booking at 19:30 (7:30pm) is fine with me. I just checked, there are 5 connecting seats in category "c" and 2 + 3 in "d".
Ashley: I don´t mind getting tickets in a lower category, just don´t want to sit by myself

.
So, how does coordinated booking work? I´m not blond, but I don´t understand how we manage to sit together if everybody buyes 1 or 2 tickets at a time ...
Someone just tell me what to do and I will try to follow the instructions

.
AshleyM
Jan 9 2008, 7:10 pm
@Samota: I just checked G and there are three seats in a row available. On the top left. I am not blond either (But I do have those moments..lol!) I can reserve mine now and you reserve yours...should give us seat numbers 5,6,7. E has plenty as well.
I am not picky at all where I sit as long as I can hear or see.
samota
Jan 9 2008, 7:26 pm
ok, let´s try G 5,6,7. If it doesn´t work, someone will have to move!
AshleyM
Jan 9 2008, 7:29 pm
As long as you know how to say "move yer arse, please" in German...it sounds good to me!

I got 6 & 7!
Did you get 5??

Jan 9 2008, 7:35 pm
YES! I got 5 and it wasn´t difficult at all ... am looking forward to our night out!

Right. Not sure where James is. I grabbed a couple of seats in the left curve and we'll see if he wants one. Otherwise I'll have to drag someone else along.
AshleyM
Jan 9 2008, 7:56 pm
Ok..6 and 7 went "poof" because I took to long!
@Sam:I did get 8 and 9...so maybe 7 can switch with you.
(The phone rang...the cat knocked over a cup of water...and I cant "lesen sie Deutsch" very well..LOL!!!)
Thanks again for the help!
What time does everyone want to meet?
DanHessen
Jan 9 2008, 8:00 pm
As mentioned they have a rather ornate reception area where you could get snacks and (frankly) average quality wine. Up to you guys if you want to throw in a meal and drinks either before or after. I'm flexible.
samota
Jan 9 2008, 8:05 pm
Dan: if James doesn´t want to go I could take the seat next to you and try to give back mine.
Will have to think about meeting before because techincally I have to work until 6, have to go home, change, eat and make my way to Wiesbaden.
DanHessen
Jan 9 2008, 8:07 pm
No problem. Doubt if anyone wants to eat a big meal before a two hour show anyway.
AshleyM
Jan 9 2008, 9:12 pm
I am not much into eating, so just the reception hall is fine with me.
We will probably be there in time to have one glass of wine before it starts.
So, I look forward to meeting everyone!
Cheers!

Jan 10 2008, 12:27 am
I'll take the seat Dan! I'm here, promise! I just happened to be out of town the day you decided to do the seat buying, heh. I'd be up for dinner or drinks as well, if we want to do that.

Hey guys,
I've been out of town for the past 3 weeks and just got back to Mainz. I would love to join you guys if it's not too late??? Where is everyone sitting exactly? I don't mind sitting by myself or maybe I'll see if I can drag a girlfriend along with me?

Jan 16 2008, 10:43 am
Since there may be some ticket swapping and most have to pick up tickets anyway, perhaps we should meet in the foyer somewhere near the ticket window? Say 19:00 latest? After we arrange seating we can head for a drink.
I'll be the Gent in a blue striped shirt, mid-40ish, receding hairline, beer-gut, bloodshot eyes, etc.
And if anyone is a no-show, please post ASAP so we don't have leftover tickets.

Hi guys!
That was a nice performance last night!
I just wish I could have gotten to hang out a bit before/afterwards with you!!
Well as usual my man was running late and we got there just as the "tardy bell" was ringing!! (The ticket-taker was a mean looking frau, I thought she was going to drag us by our ears to our seats!

)
After the last curtain he wanted to go home..which is ok. He is the one who had to get up early this morning and home is a 40 minute drive away!
We can always do it again...on a weekend! Or better yet...we can always meet for a drink! (Or I can let him sit the next one out!)
