Christmas gifts to the boss

Reading the posts about tips to the housemaster, I wondered, is it 'normal' to give your boss a gift at Christmas? My british husband wants to get his boss a bottle of sek but in my American culture, that's a big NO NO. Regardless whether it's alcohol, no gifts are brought into the office for the boss.
In the past, I've received gifts from a boss...a chocolate orange ball, yummy, or something small like that, and others, maybe a round at the bar after the Christmas carry-in/pot luck (where everyone brings something for lunch) but that's it.

What do the Germans do?

Presents to your boss are very rare, even if you have a good relationship. But if hubby wants to get the boss a bottle of bubbly let him, it shows that he has good instincts.

The only exception would be that your boss is one of your best friends, otherwise in my opinion (as ill-informed as it may be) that is a complete kiss ass action.

Pleb, yeah, that's what my american collegues would say and I would imagine the 'boss' questioning the motive as well. Otherwise known as brown-nosing the boss.
Or maybe the 'boss' in america would be thinking, rats, now I have to get him/her something now! Or the whole friggin team a token gift (on their own dime no less).

No. Absolutely not. Never have. Never seen it done. It never even occurred to me to do so.

They give their boss gift? Or at least a lot I know want to.

Never give a gift to the boss. If you do then expect it to be returned.

German gift? Absolutely.

Boss should give the subordinates a gift - or no gifts at all. I think.
