Hi, I am moving to Regensburg in February and am working on making a budget for myself. I am wondering how much I should plan to spend on food each month. I don't eat a whole lot, and I dont plan to eat at restaurants very often. I like fruit a lot. My breakfast typically consists of an apple or banana and a yogurt or a piece of bread with jam. Lunch is normally a sandwich (peanut butter and jelly, tuna, etc) and another piece of fruit, and maybe a hard boiled egg. Dinner is ramen noodles, soup, spaghettios, or something fast and easy to make. I'll sometimes have more fruit for snacks if I get hungry in between meals. I know I won't find all of these things in Germany, but hopefully this will give you a general idea of how much I'll be spending. Thanks in advance for your help!!

Food in Germany is pretty cheap compared to most other countries. If you shop at discounters (Aldi, Lidl, Plus etc.) you'll get food very cheaply indeed. But there are also markets where you can get fresh fruit pretty cheaply.

The main difference I see (at least compared to the UK) is that there is far more focus in German supermarkets on selling the basic ingredients which you use to cook meals from scratch - and far less of the packaged pre-cooked ready-meals for microwaves. So you might have to learn to spend more time preparing your food if you want to eat well and cheaply!

I think if you budget €10 per day you'll be fine - a bit more if you're planning on eating out.

Good luck with the move - I hope you enjoy Regensburg!

I've been here as a student since August and would say this estimation is pretty good. I budget €40-50/wk for groceries, and shop mostly at Aldi. Good luck with Regensburg, I'm moving there at the end of January as well.
