I'd take it to a director at your company if you know them??
Dont worry about the birth certificate thing, I lost my passport last year. Sent off the forms with the photos & certificate and got it all back within 2 weeks.

@UrbanAngel - Yes it says you must send your birth certificate, then in another section it says if renewing you just send your old passport and do not need to send your birth certificate. There are two parts, and if I remember it was not so clear.
Anyway, I renewed mine, and did not send my birth certificate.

OK, so I know I've been majorly procrastinating, but I am determined to send these darn forms off tomorrow. I got my passport photos done, and transferred the money over. Final question (I hope) is about next of kin. It says to give the names of 2 relatives/friends for contact in case of accident etc. I put my mother in field 1. Did any of you leave field 2 blank, or did you all put 2 contact people in?
There's nowt in the notes about this.
Thanks.

Brother or sister if you have one.
The chances of the names/addresses being used ain't high, but it's not hard to supply a couple of them. Bear in mind that a passport is valid for 10 years so entering someone like a 90-year old gran might be less than practical...

Actually this is only for records, and not printed on the passport, so you can use different contacts on the passport itself !

On my last passport I had to handwrite in my next of kin, so I was surprised when they asked me on the forms, but now I know why. Thanks pepper

Update - I received my passport back yesterday, so it took ca 2-3 weeks. I did not submit my birth certificate, and it proved no problem. The 2 names for next-of-kin were not printed into my passport, so I can handwrite in who I like.
You get a receipt sent back with it, as well as your old passport with 1 corner clipped off.
Thanks for all your help

cost of a UK passport will rise by 29% from Octoberso if yours is expiring, might be an idea to renew early to beat the rush (and save yourself 15 quid in the process)

I am living in Germany but going to England for a while to get some work. My passport runs out soon should I apply for a passport in England or in Germany? Which is quicker? Which is cheaper?
I have a British application form from England for a passport but I noticed it said if you live abroad you need to contact the embassy for an alternative form. I have an address in UK and Germany so which one do I go for? :-S

It is cheaper in the UK, by about a tenner or summat.
Overseas issued passports are dearer to pay for the *cough* services offered to British Citizens living abroad that we get from the Foreign Office.
AFAIK, you can only apply for a passport in the UK if you live there.
You MIGHT be able to get away with it if you went to one of the "local" offices (London, Peterborough, Liverpool, Glasgow, Belfast, Newport) and were prepared to queue and queue and queue...
FAR easier just to pop it in the post to the lubbly folks in Düsseldorf.

I've recently renewed my passport on a trip back to the UK. However, you're right, I did have to go to one of the offices (and you
must make an appointment in advance). I paid the fee for a 4-hour service, but it seems you can maybe also show up in person and get them to mail it (fast-track) to a UK address if you'll be there long enough. They might ask you to take along proof that you are (temporarily) in the UK, even if it's only for the day, such as a letter and ID from someone you're staying with, or from a hotel. There's more
info on their website.
Also, although the fee for the 4-hour service is 108 pounds, the postal service fee from Düsseldorf is almost as much (147 euros), and of course it takes longer.

I could be in England for 3 months or longer is that long enough?

Well, I got the impression that if you're willing to pay for the premium service then you could even just be there for the day. But if you want to be sure for your specific circumstances, I'd strongly suggest giving their helpline a call.

If you are in the UK for a long time (OVER 6 weeks) you could save a bit of money getting it issued there.
But I wouldn't pay for a premium service or spend all my day queueing in Newport tbh, just do it in Düsseldorf.
The main problem with getting a new British Passport is the TAT.
A lot of people don't have a six week window where they will not need their passport.
You get a registered letter and you somehow have to explain at the post office that your ID is somewhere in NRW getting processed etc etc

My son's passport was back even quicker than that. As far as I know Düsseldorf offer a while U wait appointment too if you want one.
I can't work out what the birds represent. Any patriotic ornithologists out there to throw light on this?

Bilko, they mean you give in the bank transfer whether paper, internet banking or at a terminal to your local bank yourself.
They check their bak account and when the money is there, they will process your passport.

I'm not an ornithologist, patriotic or otherwise, but according to
the British Embassy website's biometric passport FAQ:
QUOTE
We have chosen birds as a theme in the new passport to symbolise freedom to travel. The birds are British residential and were chosen because they provided a good scope for developing security features.
So now you know.

I once got a passport issued in about 1 1/2 hours, mind you I was in the Army at the time and just back from a bout of Patrick bothering in 1976

. They must´ve thought I deseved the holiday after that!
one of the ones which I replaced a couple of years ago came through after about 5 days.
Maybe I´m just lucky or nice or both.
