Double-taxed as DoD GS employee under SOFA

Hello,

I am seeking some info from people who have had similiar experiences with the German Finanzamt. I am currently employed as a DOD, GS civilian having SOFA status. My German wife and I bought a house here for economical reasons. In order to not to be double-taxed, we have to declare that after our tour, we will return to the US. Otherwise the German Finanzamt iwill consider us ordinary residents. We have never heard that an American civil servant has to make such a statement to avoid unjust taxation. Is there an alternative? Are we being unfairly scrutinized?

This is normal.. For if you stop working for the DoD, and stay in Germany then you no longer fall under SOFA.
You will then be treated as any other german. If you really want to find out more, then goto your bases Legal Office.
