How to prove my financial support or sponsorship

Is there an official form? Is a letter enough?

I've been in Berlin now almost 3 months, from the USA, which means I'm rapidly coming to the day where I'll need to extend my visa to be here legally. It's my understanding that obtaining an extended visa is not too difficult and is contingent on proving I have medical insurance, and that I can support myself financially (or that I have a sponsor who can support me).

I have medical insurance.
I have parents willing to officially sponsor me financially. But is there an official form I need to have them sign? I have a friend who said he simply had an aunt write a letter. At the Auslanderamt he mentioned that they did ask to see a copy of his aunt's passport just to verify the signature, but that beyond that it was relatively smooth and painless. Can I expect the same treatment? What's the official policy/procedure?

Ask the people at your local KVR. You will have to deal with them on this matter anyway.

You need to have your sponsor fill out a "Verpflichtungserklärung". You should be able to obtain one at your local aliens office. This is the only document they will accept for your visa. It is basically an affidavit of support. They prefer you to have someone in Germany sponsor you, rather than parents living in the USA. And when I say prefer, I mean it is almost mandatory. Good luck.

When I originally applied for my Visa from the states my Fiance and I did one of these. We were told he needed to make over 1800 euro per month (take home after their crazy 50% taxes). This was prior to us living together here. We were told if he didn't meet that requirement I would have to have 8600 euro's in my US Bank account, or income from the US equivalent to 700 euro per month. There was also a bunch of B.S. Restrictions on what size of a flat we lived in... they told us our current one was too small for two people (over 50 square meters) so we moved... and now we have to move again :-( because the girl we rented from is coming back early. Since we didn't yet have a wedding date, they were a pain in the ass... once we had a wedding date, their tune changed dramatically, although not anymore friendly or helpful than they were before... so yes, you will get special treatment... special treatment that will make you pull your hair out and curse humanity.

If you go to the website: http://www.germany.info/relaunch/info/cons...s/visa/faq.html , the way its worded this document can only be done by someone supporting you who is located in Germany.

Also you should look at the other threads here, If you've been here 60 days you need to register whether you are getting a residence permit or not.

so if you're family is willing to shell out the cash then maybe they've got 10 grand to put into your bank account to show these yahoos.

And in Berlin, it isn't called the KVR, Its the Auslaenderbehoerde and there website is here: https://www.berlin.de/labo/auslaender/diens...elle/index.html

They are closed starting for the holidays the week of Christmas until January 5th. If I was you I wouldn't dilly dally around making an apt. There is a special number for US Citizens that one of the nicer Germans down there gave me, they speak English... however you still need to politely ask them if they can speak English in German. Expect awkwardness as they will respond to you in German that they do... the number is 902694261, or if that one rings busy 902694262 . In your apt, bring a friend with you who speaks German. Despite them assuring us someone would be present in our apt yesterday, who would speak English no one was available. Make sure you bring with you copies of your health insurance policy that is Valid in Germany, and your bank statements and original signed affidavit of support.

Good Luck
