I am new to Toytown, though I've been living in Germany for almost 7 years. I've been living in Hamburg for two and just wanted to let anyone who's interetsed know about my church.

All the details can be found on the website www.ibc-hamburg.de but feel free to ask me questions.

Does anyone know of a Catholic church in Hamburg that offers English services?
Amanda214
This is the only Catholic church I've found in Hamburg with a weekly mass in English. My family and I attend the church. It's pretty dry compared to some US Catholic services, but at least I understand it!

St. Elisabeth

Harvestehude

Oberstr. 65

20144 Hamburg

Holy Mass celebrated in English every Sunday at midday (12:00 noon).

Thanks for the info Amanda. Do you know if they plan to have a service on Easter Sunday? Also, is the building an old pretty church or pretty new? I'd like to go to one of the really beautiful churches, even if it is in German.

Since Hamburg (like most of northern Germany) is a predominantly Protestant city there are only a few Catholic churches in this huge Diaspora Archdiocese (Erzbistum Hamburg) ... with the most prominent being the Cathedral church St. Marien

Looking at the Easter Mass schedule (for German masses scroll up) you´ll find that the only foreign language services will be held in Polish, Croat and Portuguese, because those nations make up the vast majority of Catholics in Hamburg.

Thanks for the info. So who can tell me which is the most beautiful and interesting Catholic church in Hamburg?

For me the most beautiful Catholic church in Hamburg is the baroque St.-Josephs-Kirche ... originally built 1718 - 1721, and reconstructed 1953 - 1955 after being completely destroyed in 1944

But:

It´s situated right in the middle of Große Freiheit in St. Pauli ... a district of Hamburg where only very few, courageous parents would take their kids for a midnight Easter mass

Yup, st. elizabeth it is. I go there too, and join the choir. tongue.gif Easter sunday is at 12 noon, Good Friday is at 5.30pm (if you'd like to come too).
