Best Bavarian Slopes for Snowboarding

Where to go to board & work??

Hi all,
New to this forum and will soon be new to Germany.
I'm arriving at the start of December and plan on doing some boarding. What do you folks think is the top spot to go to? Keeping in mind that I'd like to try and get work (whatever I can get with my minimal German skills!!) wherever I'm boarding so the slope has to be close enough to a township. I was thinking of Garmisch? Any advice or suggestions?
Cheers everyone.

if you're looking for work (like bar work, or wot?) then I would strongly suggest heading into Austria, to Kitzbühl, St.Anton, Söllden, Mayrhofen, Saalbach, Ischgl, Obergürgl.. they are the trendy resorts where loads of foreigners work and where the slopes and the atmosphere is best.

I worked in Saalbach Hinterglemm for a season and it rocked.

Have you ever been here before? Garmisch is a little town with a couple of slopes, good for a sunday afternnon but not much more.If you're staying for a season you'll be bored stiff. Saalbach (for example) has 360km of slopes and a glacier nearby, enough to keep you interested. Also St.Anton as it's on a network of resorts.

St Anton: full of Aussie ski instructors.

I agree with what the previous posts implied: go to Austria rather than come to Germany. But if you do insist on Germany then Garmisch might be your best bet, yes.

Johnny, I think Gideon is refering to the fact that Timmeh is a New Zealander. But do they have Kangaroos in NZ? Crazy Kiwi more like?

Anyway, for the combination of boarding AND working, there's no place I'd rather work than Kitzbühel. Ok, so it's in Austria not Bavaria, but it's not very far over the border. This resort is basically the playground of Munich's rich and famous. A cute little town. Two large mountains either side of it (the Hahnenkahm and the Horn). Can't go wrong. Of course it's a popular working destination, so competition for jobs is high.

Staying in Bavaria, I know the following resorts and they are all perfectly acceptable: Lengries, Sudelfeld, Spitzingsee - none is near a particularly large town though. I guess Zugspitze/Garmisch is the only Bavarian resort near a big town.

We have wallabys in the wild in Aotearoa (especially around Waimate), they look like kangaroos. They arent native though.

yeah and if you go to Kitz, go for a job in the London Pub, by far the best place to meet people and have fun.

But for me Kitz doesn't have that good a nightlife, if you're a kiwi you're basically destined for the Kangaruh bar rolleyes.gif

Crazy Kangaroo is a bar in St Anton - Gets my vote as one of the best Apres Ski bars in the Alps.

It'll definately be Germany over Austria...mainly because I have a work/holiday visa for Germany.
What do you think the chances are of getting a job on the actual ski fields...such as bar work etc?

thanks mothbola... thought i was on to a loser there

I hear the Austrians have decided against recommending people wear the latest style ski helmets this season.

They decided to test a new helmet against wearing a traditional woolen hat. So they chucked them both off a 100 metre bridge onto rocks.

The results were conclusive, the ski helmet was trashed and the wooly hat completely undamaged.
