Vehicle and road tax in Germany

Does it exist? How does it all work?

Anyone know if there is a road tax here?

I drive a 4 wheel SUV and UK plans to penalise drivers by raising the motor tax to £300 next year and £400 the year after! penny pinching Gordon thought that one up.

As I spend most of my time here, I'm considering registering my vehicle in germany now as it could be a lot cheaper.

Apart from the costs to do this (TUV, registration process etc etc) is there a german equivalent road tax that I need to know about? wink.gif

Im not sure, if vehicle and road tax means the same as "Kfz-Steuer".
To calculate your "Kfz-Steuer" look here or here (pdf).
Jeeves
Yes, KFZ-Steuer is what is meant.

looked at the sites - seems complicated to work out - my german is poor at present! I have a diesel 2 litre if that means anything to anyone! huh.gif
Jeeves
All the things you need to enter should be on the Fahrzeugschein.
janandrob
Thankd Jeeves, but that doesn't answer my question - "whats the cost"?
Keydeck
Take the relevant details from the little document and enter them on the screen provided in Freising's post above.

Ah, it seems you have a UK registered car currently. Ok, if you PM me the make, model, fuel type & year I should be able to tell you.

Also ah. Bloody obvious, now you mention it. My bad, as some people might say.

I guess the Germans dont have like we have in the UK do they, for people who get free road tax due to mobility problems...without a car im pretty much stuck.

Handicapped people can get a "Kfz-Steuer" reduction (50% or 100%, depending on the degree of the mobility problems), if that´s what you are asking...

According to the pdf linked to above, a Euro3 diesel will cost €15,44 per 100ml, so 2litre will be €308.80 per year.

If you have a worst emmisions class, then the cost is higher.
If you have poor fine-particle emmisions, you pay more, if you have a particle filter, you pay less.
