Cable TV providers in Berlin

Advice on what options are available

We are about to get a TV and are wondering about the options for cable TV in Berlin. My German friend who has helped me get all my other stuff set up (phone, DSL, electricity, etc.) couldn't help me with this one because it is part of her Betriebskosten for her apartment. My rental contract doesn't have that in it so I guess I need to find my own provider. We are looking to not spend too much money - besides, we don't know German well yet so it seems silly to have 200 channels that we don't understand when we could be happy with 20 that we don't understand! smile.gif Also, I wonder if there are any English language channels on cable or do I have to do a satellite dish ($$$) for that?

Thanks,
Ali

By the lack of replies am I to assume that everyone has satellite? If that is the case, then what are the best satellite deals?

Thanks,
Ali

I don't have cable, just bunny ears. I get 19 channels that are broadcast.

Thanks for the reply Venus.

Where do you buy bunny ears? Do you have trouble getting good reception?
VenusInFurs
I got them at Saturn...you need the bunny ears and a receiver, called a DVB-T box. you just hook it all up, and then you have to set up the box. I'd get someone that speaks German to help you as you can program the box to be in English but it starts off in german, and all the instructions are in German.

How much does the DVB-T box cost?
Owain Glyndwr
you can get a dvb-t box for as little as €40 plus a few for the antenna.

this site gives a summary of radio and tv channels:

I have Kabel Deutschland. It costs 25€ per month, is digital (but not HD yet) has a ton of channels and lots of English language channels including NASN sports, Turner Classics, Lots of Disney for the kids etc...
They are now also offering very fast (36 mb) cable modem in a lot of Berlin areas, great packages.

Check it out: http://www.kabeldeutschland.de/home/index.html

They also have lots and lots of radio stations!

Thanks for all the info so far. It is hard to tell from the DVB-T website but are there any channels that broadcast in English?

Thanks!
VenusInFurs
Nope :/

It's been really helpful for my German though, but mind you I spoke quite a bit when I got it already. Still, hearing German all the time is really helpful.
lolo
You can't get BBC WORLD or CNN if you get a DVB-T set up.
