Thief takes 300-year-old Bible in Berlin

BERLIN - A thief broke into the offices of a Berlin church during Sunday services and stole a valuable 300-year-old illuminated Bible, police said.
In addition to the richly illustrated 1704 Bible, the thief, or thieves, also made off with an undisclosed amount of money, police said Tuesday.

Während am Ewigkeitssonntag / Totensonntag, dem 25. November 2007 über 150 Gläubige in der Martin-Luther-Kirche im festlichen Gottesdienst ihrer Toten gedachten, wurde das zur Kirche gehörende Gemeindebüro aufgebrochen. Der bzw. die Täter brachen einen Stahlschrank auf und stahlen die dort aufbewahrte Geldkassette der von der Gemeinde betriebenen Aktion "Laib und Seele", einer Lebensmittelausgabe an bedürftige Menschen, und eine aus dem Jahr 1704 stammende, reich illustrierte und sehr kostbare Merian-Bibel.
Die Gemeindeglieder, die gleich nach dem Gottesdienst von diesem dreisten Diebstahl erfuhren, waren tief erschüttert und empört.

BERLIN (Reuters) - A team of experts has unearthed an 800-year-old cellar under a central Berlin car park which they say dates the city back to the 12th century, earlier than previously thought.

The cellar, which dates from 1192, was found alongside the remains of a graveyard, church and school on a site which the archaeologists say formed the heart of medieval Berlin.
