I just searched the site for a recommendation to a Munich hair salon, and found that a lot of the recommendations are quite old.

I'm DESPERATE for a really fab hair-do. I'm suffering with post-baby fluffy bits (that's the technical term) and have fine/fluffy/curly/frizzy hair. After scraping by on average (and over-priced) cuts from various salons for the last 2 years I would like something special to celebrate my daughter's first birthday.

So, I can play it safe (?) and go to Toni & Guy (again. It's been a while) If this is where you go who do you recommend? If not, what is the salon called that you recommend? oh, and any recent opinions on the MIKA hair salon recommended in the "straightening hair" thread?

Thanks in advance

FABULOUS!

Graham & Graham get very good reviews on the whole from TTers.

I'm going to give them a call, at least i can explain myself better in English. I can't believe how much i was paying for my previous hair do's. 150 Euros, blink.gif and it was too short, too bulky, a chunk missing out the back, I thinned the front out myself when i got home (i'm, a stylist) she dried it terribly (i've never left a salon looking so untidy) she didn't have the colour we agreed on or the one she wanted as a 2nd choice so she just kept choosing a darker and darker colour - PRESUMING i didn't understand her. It didn't fit ANY of my requirements. Nice salon, shame about the stylist.

you should definitely try El Corte in Schwabing...I went there for a cut a few weeks ago and LOVED it...they all speak English, serve you coffee(cappucino, latte, etc) and have a full bar and will make you a cocktail...none of them are German(one is from England, one from Malta and one from Spain. A friend recommended this place and I am happy she did. it is a really nice place and you wont be dissapointed. i have sent a few other friends there as well...

There are quite a few recent recommendations on the last 3 pages of Ladies hairdressers, hair stylists, and colourists.

I have some very crazy hair - baby fine, left side naturally curls under, right side naturally flips up and any length beyond my shoulders breaks off. I LOVE my cut and color from Robert MacKinnon (089) 2020 7797. He's Canadian, so his English is pretty good. wink.gif

MIKA moved to Berlin and closed her salon, or so I was told.

I LOVE my cut and color from Robert MacKinnon (089) 2020 7797. He's Canadian, so his English is pretty good.

Where is he located?
Renia
I like Jean at Toni and Guy, Frauenstrasse for my highlights. He´s a charming Frenchman who speaks English. Not the cheapest though...
wahoo
Robert MacKinnon gets my vote as well. I love him! He is by Fraunhoferstr. ubahn.

What does Robert charge for a wash-cut-blowdry?

I've booked in with Robbie on Tuesday. He seemed very nice on the phone. Thanks!! biggrin.gif

i have been going to the Toni & Guys at Maximiliansplatz for the past 2 years. i am very happy with their service.

No one is answering the phone at Robimac's number (2020 7797)... Is he on vacation this week? No way to leave a message either...
Wizadora
Probably closed for Faschings, I know my hairdressers are
knickerbokerglory
Last time i went to Robimac's salon (beginning Dec)he was in hospital. And the lady covering him didn't know what was wrong with him, he'd just been rushed off there with stomach pains. Has anybody heard an update since then? I hope he is closed for faschings, not anything with his health again.
camlough
I went there just a few weeks ago and he was there. I overheard him having some sort of conversation about being ill, but that's all I know. Wasn't too impressed with the Stylist either - some woman who kept telling me that she knows my hair better than I do. I love being patronised by Hairdressers!! dry.gif
Schwabingirl
I've been in Munich for about half a year and spent the first 3 months avoiding having to deal with trying out a new hairdresser - especially because my hair needs special attention, care and understanding! (Gee, what can I say, I'm special!!) Anyway, I wrote down a few suggestions from Toytown and began to make the rounds. Well, after hearing all sorts of things from hairdressers who don't have any experience with (m)any other types of hair, I finally found, for me, the ideal hairsalon - El Corte (Augustenstr. 98 tel: 089-54508060 (Swabing/Max Vorstadt area). I can't rave enough about the hair dressers there. First, between the 3 guys there's English, Deutsch, Spanish, Italian and even Maltese spoken. The guys are super at what they do, everyone comes out looking great. They are truly friendly, kind people. I love the place so much, I'm going every week and my hair is looking better and becoming healthier too! Anyway - thanks for all the tips - but El Corte's the place for me!

Has anyone been to Fabian K on Rumfordstr in Isarvorstadt? It is an AVEDA salon
hollyd
I have gone to Robimack / Robert MacKinnon & liked him. I have really fine and thin hair. Q for others - is it appropriate to tip him? Or no, as he is owner of salon? And - if there is someone else that puts color on my hair, do I tip her & how?? Used to just putting the tip on my credit card back home, but not an option here...
Fallen Angel
I was just reading about a salon called HaarWerk in the Alte Hof in the March issue of Cosmo. Has anyone been there? I've tried googling it and the website keeps showing up as Clarissaheld.de, which confuses me. unsure.gif
Alpine Dreamer
If you're still looking for a good contact at Toni & Guy, I would highly recommend Patrick or Tine. They are both senior, very friendly and charge €57.00. Patrick speaks v. good English and is perhaps a little more creative if you're looking for a change! Tine speaks some English!

I've been going there for the last 6 yrs and have only been disappointed twice due to other stylists I had in the absence of Patrick and Tine.

Good luck!

A bit more searching on google also led me to CutClub in Obergiesing/Bogenhausen. I like their website and they got good reviews on a few German hairdresser forums. Anyone been there?
LauKatOD
Regarding HaarWerk its on the corner somewhere near Hofbrauhaus, walked by the other night when it was closed it looked like a nice clean and posh salon...until we got to one of the chairs and there was still a pile of hair left on the floor from their last customer! GROSS! Why would you go through the effort of putting away every other piece of mess in the salon and not bother to pick up after your last client?!?

My Brother-in-laws wife just took over this hair salon: http://www.kristo-munich.com/start.html

She does excellent work.

I hope this helps.

I have had mine done several times by these guys

El Corte Hair Lounge
Augustenstr. 98
089 5450 8060

El Corte

Nearly all my colleagues go there and now several friends and have had nothing but extremely positive reactions and comments. A wash/cut/blow dry is 47 for women.

They speak English, Spanish, German, Maltese and when they ask if you want something to drink, they really mean it. They have a full bar behind the register. I sipped on 2 wonderfully large glasses of precesso and a nice cappuccino last time smile.gif

Schuetz & Schwartz

FABULOUS!

I'll second that. I went last night and was extremely happy with them. Sabine was great- she was easy to talk to about what I wanted and was open about what was realistic- she really did give me good advice on what works with my hair.

I went for a drastically different cut and was really nervous about how it would turn out- but I think it looks fantastic. And the colors she used are really beautiful.

Hi I and heaps of other Toytowners are going to Fabian

I go to CutClub in Obergiesing and he is not cheap (€55) for a haircut, but I have been satisfied every time I go there. He (Bernd) speaks English well. He also does Hair and Makeup for the film industry in Munich. He has two locations, one in Bogenhausen, and the other in Obergiesing at U2 Silberhornstr.

I've been to Graham and Graham a couple of times now. Both times David has done a wonderful job with my hair - he takes time and pays real attention to detail, meaning my hair looks exactly as I want it and that it stays looking nice for weeks on end (I hate it when your hair starts looking shaggy and untrimmed again after only a couple of weeks - longevity of styling is surely an indicator of quality). The salon is also a lovely environment - clean, bright, tastefully decorated. Everyone working there is really friendly and very attentive.

Good styling, good service and a lovely salon experience!

These suggestions are great, thanks everyone.

One question - what do people typically tip at salons in Munich?
hollyd
I just had 2nd cut at Robimack and highly recommend him. Very happy with my cut and color -took a lot of time to listen and do the services. He is super nice, listens and gives good advice. And, he has English magazines!
gills
Robert (Robimack) is my hairdresser too. I can't say enough good things about him - highly recommended.
Light Blue
Definitely recommend FABIAN at:

Adrenalin
Thalikirchner str 16 (near Sendlingertor)
ph: 089 260 66 59

30€ incl. wash, cut & blow-dry, styling, products, etc.

He's really good, listens & is loads of fun to talk to! smile.gif
mix_twix
@ hollyd - how much did you pay for cut and colour?
@light blue - did Fabian speak english?

thanks!
Cookie
Last time I was a Robbie Mack, I believe I paid 80 Euros (not including tip) for a color and cut. Personally, I would call and ask first before going anywhere.
Renia
So, you tipped at Robbie Mack? I am going there tomorrow...never sure what to do.
Cookie
Yea, I did, but not as much as I would have a "regular" (if you will) employee. Personally, I just can't leave a salon without tipping. YMMV (your mileage may vary).
Renia
So, what do you do with the tip...is there a tip jar or do you say "This is for you"... am just so not used to the etiquette.
Carm
my last cut n colour was 90, I gave 100, they gave me 10 back, but I wouldn't take it. The shop owners wife did my hair, so, its her place too, but I don't feel comfortable about not tipping. Even back in Canada, my hairdresser was the shop owner, and I would tip her, sometimes she took it, sometimes not. So, I often brought her some nice chocolates from Germany or a piece of crystal. As a sign of appreciation.
Since I have patients tipping me, giving me gifts, and such, and I know how much I appreciate the act of kindness, I am more aware of what I give and how I do it.
Gidget
Glamour magazine listed Molotow HaarDesign as one of the best salons in Munich so I gave them a try. Had my hair cut by Gabriella who is super-nice and friendly (have had my share of hairdressers in Munich who don't chat at all tongue.gif) and I was really happy with the results (got lots of compliments). You can find more info here: http://www.molotow-haardesign.de/start.htm

I just left it on the counter (there might be a little tray thing), looked down quickly at the note and said, "Thanks for everything!" Not exactly the smoothest move, but he got the message.

Re: Fabian at Adrenalin

He sounds great & the price is right!
Does he do highlights as well ... any feedback on highlights?

Thanks!
Renia
I went to Robbie Mack today, very happy as he listened and explained what he thought was best for my hair and why. He knew all the Toytowners I mentioned too smile.gif
hollyd
@Mix Twix - I paid 90€ for the 2nd time, but only 80€ for the first time and the services were the same. I didn't tip Robert either time - the 1st time I put the amount on my EC Card, and totally forgot they don't have a tip line like in the States. I was a bit mortified as I had no cash to tip him. But, then after checking TT and other sources for tipping ettiquette prior to my next appt, I decided not to tip him, but did tip the hairwash assistant a few euros. Which felt totally strange as Robert did a great job! Now thinking this wasn't quite right either!? Good grief...next time I will likely tip him ;-)
