American Thanksgiving Dinner 2004

Who wants to get together?

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > South Germany > Munich > Meetups in Munich

Winegirl
Yep. I'll make the pumpkin pie from real pumpkin. Also what about drinks? Should we all just bring whatever we would like to drink? I, of course, will bring a bottle of wine...was there ever any doubt smile.gif

Since I'm home now. We decided today was Thanksgiving. My mom and I started cooking at 9:30 am. Made the pie, the stuffing, the cranberries, and now the Turkey is in the oven. CAN'T WAIT TO EAT!!!
interplanetjanet
Whoohoo! Fresh pumpkin pie!

Can you tell I really like pumpkin pie? rolleyes.gif
Gen
whoops, we've had a misunderstanding -- I won't be coming, nor will I be contributing turkey money. Just wanted to make sure you got that discussion started, as I was quite surprised how much it cost when I first hosted! wink.gif
eurovol
Ok, we've got Wine, but no Gen. Still hoping for the Wild Turkey though.

Pumkin pie is listed next to Winegirl's name up top, I just forgot to put it in the menu. Will try to do better next time. wink.gif
anabi
What sorts of drinks do folks want? Beer/wine... and WT (though I'm a JD man myself)... do folks want Cosmos/Martinis, etc?
eurovol
Actually, Wild Turkey is only because it is Turkey day. I prefer George Dickle, Maker's Mark or Old Grandad for the untimate bourbon experience. You can find it at the Hauptbahnhof, but it is like 40€ or more a bottle.

I am definitely sure that there will be a high demand for wine. Depending on #'s of beer drinkers, cases or kegs. Those little frig kegs are pretty good. The bar is not well stocked at the moment and that could be quickly solved with a few donations. There is banana and peach schnapps/liquer and compari and such.
As for softdrinks, that too is solved with a few donations.

May even do it on the honor system. The drinks are there and you just chuck into the bar jar 30c for soft cheap, 50c for beer & soft expensive, and 1€ for hard-cheap and 1.50€ for hard quality. It is just a thought at the moment. That is the way it is done at the fire departments around here when they have a party.
anabi
I can help/deal with sorting (and shop) to figure that out... given I owned a bar once I should be half decent at stocking one! Also if folks want Cosmos, the way I make them is with fresh cranberries and lime (a cranberry drink kinda fits with the whole T-giving). Anyway with a total count and drink prefs it will be easy (though given it's TT'ers we should up the normal 1/2 bottle of wine per person norm!).
randy
Eurovol, where did you find peach schnapps? I wanted to give a friend a poor man's cocktail (fuzzy navel), but haven't found the stuff yet.
Kat
If y'all want my Biertisch, I'll need someone to volunteer transport there and back. Currently un-wheeled.
spuzzum
Since many Canadians missed our Thanksgiving, is it possible for Canadians to attend this American festival considering we eat the same things?
spuzzum
I have also the ability to make pumpkin pie.. something that truly makes Thanksgiving worthwhile, even if it is post Halloween.

Eurovol will have to answer that one, since it's his place that will be overrun with TTers. I'm guessing that, since it's also your holiday, you'll at the very least be on the top of the waiting list.
Winegirl
I only want wine to drink. No cocktails or beer for me on Turkey day.
eurovol
I have transpo and will collect the tables sometime the week of.

spuzzum, we can put you on the waiting list as well. cool.gif

Winegirl-ya don't say? wink.gif I can make a great potent wine spritzer?
interplanetjanet
So who's bringing the green bean casserole soda?
biogeek
Hi, I'm a newbie but would love to get in on the thanksgiving extravaganze if there's room. Went to my first TT event on Tuesday, seems like a great group! 'twould be me +1. Would make stuffing, salad, apple pie if it's still needed, or whatever you're short on. Please advise!
MommyinDE
@ IPJ

That's just plain nasty!
Nisha
Hello, if there is any room left, I would love to come for the Thanksgiving Dinner! I would gladly throw in some money for food/drinks/etc. smile.gif
eurovol
We now have biogeek +1 and nisha.
I will make the new list and post it soon.
chewy
Can i come to? I'm British, and it'll take me a long time to get there, but it would be fun wink.gif
JoolyBooly
no, you're not only non-american (like me, you belong on the wait list) but you're a bloody vegetarian! What are you going to eat, peas?! Waste of a good seat tongue.gif

AND you should be made to walk to my place and back with no shoes on to earn your spot, teach you young ones how it was in my day...

Does this look right?

canuck
I'd like to go as well...but Kieferngarten is just too far!! Isn't that on the outskirts of Augsburg or something??
drax
Could I possibly go on the waitlist too? I was planning on going up to London for Thanksgiving, but I just got a job so I have to stay here. sad.gif
eurovol
The waiting list is for non-Americans, however the ones that got on the list early will soon take precedence over the last minuters. wink.gif

Canuck, you are on the waiting list and Keiferngarten is more in the direction of Berlin. tongue.gif

drax, EU citizen and an American?
eurovol
By virtue of being on the waiting list from practically near the very beginning these two people have now been officially declared Americans for a day. They are the artist formerly known as Graham and JoolyBooly. That day of course being the 27th of November and that makes a total of 20 + 3 rugrats.

If you missed it then tough, this is for members of the USA not those lame canadian wannabes.

Kieferngarten is on the U6
mizbunce
I think I mentioned this, but I'm leaving for the States this Friday and coming back the following Saturday just hours before our Tday event. Anybody want me to bring anything? (Within reason and my luggage capacity, naturally.) A can of that cranberry jelly stuff some people mysteriously prefer to the real thing? wink.gif

PM me until early next week. After that, I won't have much time to shop.
randy
Not apropos of anything other than the Thanksgiving theme, here's a bizarre pic I saw on Friday Funnies.net - a random collection of weird files.

eurovol
mizbunce bring me back one of those! Although, it looks to be saltwater injected to make the breast meat bigger. tongue.gif

Just to make your mouths water a bit, I have started making my stuffing today. The chicken broth for the sage dressing is being cooked now. I will make the cornbread for it tomorrow.

As it is getting close to the time to buy the Turkeys, we need to know now the exact numbers? So, if you are particularly keen on bringing a "friend" PM me. If there are other Americans not already on the list, speak up. If you want on the waiting list, the sooner the better!

This event will be an all day/all nighter. The cooking shall commence after 10am and the kitchen will be open to those that need to cook here. Football games of the past (featuring Tennessee) will start at 12:30ish with light snacks. Don't want to ruin your appetite! There is a possibility of having a spades or hearts tournament if enough want to join in. I never learned to play bridge and canasta takes too long. Or we could play buy a card gut! It is three card penny poker with a twist.
The bar will open at 7ish. What is the consensus on eating time? I figure it to be in the 4:30-5:30ish range.

A real old timey Thanksgiving ala my family, I can't wait!!!
Mbangura
@TT umm... could I uh... maybe.. uh.. not uh... work that day... please? But only if thats ok with you.

@mizbunce I am one of those folks who acutally enjoys the cranberry sauce seedles, skinless etc. So if you were in the mood to pick me up a can of that (ocean spray preferably) and put it in the freezer, I would forever be in your debt.

And I dont remember what I had originally planned to make but I'm adding meat pies to that list. Just wouldnt be t-day without them.
Kat
Eurovol's place seems to be a bit out in the boonies. Anyone driving and willing to take a few passengers? I would be willing to meet a ride anywhere in town... cool.gif
Winegirl
What's up with the bar openning at 7 and eating at 4:30-5ish? I'm having wine with dinner!

Kieferngarten is on the U6, it's not that far. U-bahn's run every 10 mintues on Sat's to that stop. I think it would be a bad idea for people to drive...

But speaking of location how do we get from the U-bahn station to your house?

Anyone see pumpkins in the store?
Mbangura
Having been there only twice, and getting lost once, I can tell you it is about 6 blocks from the train station, not far, unless you are carrying lots of heavy stuff for cooking, then... And the directions go something like this,

straight, right, left, right, right, end of block. Shite, I don't know maybe we can be met at the U, some kind of Taxi service.
Kat
That was the part I was worried about. If we all arranged to take the same train, we could share taxis perhaps?
Mbangura
a taxi service run by eurovol, that is.

&

Just to confirm, I am doing green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and meat pies. I dont do cran sauce from scratch and that seems to be the preference.

I think thats the most I can carry at once. Oh and if anyone sees a big bag of potatoes go on sale let me know.

kind of important I guess. Are there food allergies I should be aware of, I was going to make potatoes with cheese, but if there are any lactose intolerant amongst you really looking forward to potatoes, I can leave it out.
eurovol
First off, I live in Freimann. It is a five minute slow walk from U6 Kieferngarten. No need for a taxi. I will PM the attendees the exact address this weekend.

There is a Tengelmann's just across the street, so drinks can easily be wagoned home. Also any last minute things can also be had.

The bar is a real bar. Softdrinks, beer and wine will be flowing all day. The bar is for cocktails and dancing or general merry-making.

The kitchen will also be opened early for people who want to cook here.
Some things are just better freshly made. That is why there will be other activities early on and football. I have tons of pots and pans and pie tins and most likely all the plates, forks and knives that we will need.

Mbangura, there is a menu posted a page or two back. Also, find someone to switch with at TB. I don't think TexasT will do it for you.

Canuck- you are on the waiting list.
davo- you are on the invite list.
spuzzum- waiting list.
drax-???
eurovol
OK folks, the time is getting near. mizbunce, you can leave anything here that you make and can be frozen prior to cooking and serving.
I have just finished making the cornbread for the sage stuffing. Boy does the house smell good. smile.gif
PM me with times that you will show up and any special requests?!!! That way I can PM back the directions.

Kitchen opens at 10am.
Football starts at 12:30ish.
Food is at 5pm.
Bar is open at 7pm.
Does anybody want to get in on penny poker, strip poker, spades, hearts, swingers hearts, etc... tongue.gif
