Hi,
I try to eat less meat for a number of reasons and just wondered if any of you can recommend some good vegie products to buy here in Germany? I'm in Bremen so don't nec. have the same supermarkets as you in Hamburg.
If anyone can give me tips od how to marinade Tofu or use quorn in ways to make it tasty I'd be very grateful!!!

Any good restaurants for when I visit Hamburg (central would be good as I normally travel by train)? Cheers

Tofu doesn't marinate well. The only way to get flavour into it is to buy those vacuum storage containers, put the marinade in that to cover the tofu, and let it sit for at least an hour. If you're looking for something like Mexican grilling, use equal parts lime and tomato juices, garlic, much fresh cilantro and some chipotle pepper. A more "steaky" marinade is soy plus half as much water and much coarsely ground black pepper.
Don't try this with silken or baked tofu.

Totally being the lazy vegetarian, I just make a trip to the corner Asian markt. Buy Kimchee raman type noodles, tofu & fresh bean sprouts. Then slice the tofu (about 100 to 200grams) in thin strips (so that the flavour can take quickly). Toss it all together in the pot with enough boiling water that there will be a soupy mixture involved & three minutes later it's done. If you have fresh Thai basil it is even better.
I also toss thinely sliced tofu into the powdered soup mixes (tomato & vegetable noodle) My son who is nine loves his soup this way and he is the biggest carnivore.

Thanks for your replies. Especially the marinade ideas.
Unfortunately Bremen seems to bypassed a bit in the Supermarket chain stakes so I'll have to do a bit or searching, hence asking about actual products not just stores.
Found this on the web

Thanks for that goodlife. Most of those are not easy for me to get to but the last one is not too bad so will give that a whirl.
Any actual products/brands which are good or to stay away from?

Goodlife - Just had another look and think I can just about get to the Aleco Bio Supermarkt on Bismarckstraße. Thanks!!

Glad I could help!
Brands I usually prefer when shopping "natural products" are
Söbbeke
Andechser
Taifun (for Tofu)
Nagel (Tofu too)
Rapunzel
Allos
I can't think of the other brands right now...
I can really recommend the smoked Tofu (Räuchertofu), tried it last week and am hooked!

Was that the Taifun brand?
Anything else you particularly like?

Just looked at the package of the smoked Tofu, it's from Demeter, but Taifun usually has smoked one too. This is special, cause it has sunflower seeds and herbs in it (yummy).
Well, what I particularly like, hmmm, I can only write what I often buy/eat lol
Pasta from Byodo
Chocolate from Rapunzel
Tea from Lebensbaum
Bread Wholewheat from Herzberger

I've found that it's almost easier to find flavored tofu here in Germany than the plain flavor-it-yourself stuff, at least at places like Edeka and Basic. I love making tofu burritos with smoked tofu, beans, salad greens and shredded sheep Gouda.
I am enclosing my father's recipe for braised tofu. (He's a professional vegetarian chef.) This recipe can be used in stir fries, as topping for pizza, tossed with noodles and pesto, or mixed into spaghetti sauce, to name a few. A well seasoned cast iron skillet works best but you can also use a nonstick. The most important ingredient in this recipe is patience - something I am still working on. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
* 1 - package plain firm tofu
* Half a medium sized yellow onion, minced
* A few garlic gloves, minced
* Soy sauce to taste
* Olive oil for frying
# 1. Drain tofu and chop into desired sized cubes. Spread an absorbent kitchen towel on the table and transfer tofu onto one half of the towel. Cover with other half of towel and blot excess water from tofu. Leave in towel while you mince the onions and garlic.
# 2. Heat a few tablespoons of oil in a pan, add the minced onions and saute on low to medium heat until translucent. Add the garlic and cook a little longer. Do not allow the garlic to turn brown. Add the tofu and saute until all sides are browned, usually about 20 minutes. When done, sprinkle with soy sauce (to taste.)

That sounds really good marymanu. One of the problems I have had in the past is that I normally don't actually like Tofu or Quorn so that presents a challenge in the way of getting a balanced diet. Hopefully with some tips like this that will change.
Goodlife, thanks for the product info. I shall have a look and see what other interesting goodies I can find.
