Just a quick note to hello, our situation is basically this;

1. gf is Russian, we live together here in Sunny Bolton

2. She is an interpreter or translator in Russian, English and German

3. On the strength of her 'year abroad' at uni here, in Hamburg and Berlin she's been offered a decent job in Hamburg when she finishes here uni here, Sept 08, using all three of her languages.

4. Co. will sort out her WP/RP.

5. I'm in IT, Solaris etc - looking for same next year in HH or anywhere really, now the bug has bitten we're thinking out of the box.

6. We have three kids, 18, 11, and 8

So, I'm wondering how the market is for my types in HH, all I see on the German sites is SAP, SAP and SAP. I'm currently pulling 3k week Euro contracting. Sounds a lot but we seem to have spent most of it...

Also, wrt renting a place, am I safe in thinking about 6 months rent up front to clear all charges? Looked at some nice places, around 1500 euro/mo. I've been over many times to HH and Berlin during her year abroad so I'm up-to-speedish. To this end how much wodge do u think we'd need to cover relocation, kaution/provision, settling in and me finding a job? I'd don't think her future employer is offering any, but to be honest we've not thought about it. Her pay will be around 3k Euro a mo.

Oh, I can read Germany pretty badly but enough to get by, spoken is harder! I can speak pretty good Russian and Russian is way, way harder than German, in fact German is almost English!

Ta peeps!

Well there is a Sun office in Hamburg but they have been letting people go rather than taking on bord.
However maybe a job search will find a Sun customer who is in the neighbourhood...
SteK
Cheers for that! I'm actually working for BT, and they have an office in Hamburg I notice...
HEM
Try pulling strings via BT then. At least for contacts.

Hansenet is there & you may even come across a Welsh guy there (think hes still there - no contact in ages).
Don't know if they use Sun equipment though. Airbus have a lot of Sun equipment.

Just out of curiosity, which is it? Is she an interpreter or is she a translator, or both?

you could try putting your CV on www.gulp.de and monster.de.

Good luck

Soz! Both. Prefers interpreting tho, esp. simultaneous, which to me looks impossible!

I'm just navigating through Gulp now, with my crappy German. Should i get the gf to translate my cv into German? And should I put my pic on in the German style. I know opinions on this differ in the expat community.

cheers

You dont translate a UK CV into German & get what they expect. I think there are several threads on this.
In my case I presented a Lebenslauf in German and a CV in English... (curiously Wikipedia claims Lebenslauf=CV...)

A photo on your CV is normal here (I see some great one's trawelling through Gulp all day).

Get it translated if you can, you might get a hiring manager who doesn't speak much English but that doesn't mean that English won't be enough for the actual work. You can put both a CV in German and one in English in your profile.
