KaDeWe, but I'm looking forward to getting back to Berlin to explore and discover more. After living in Germany for ten years. I visited Berlin for the first time two weeks ago to attend the Al Jarreau concert at the Philharmonie Hall. I arrived in Berlin one hour prior to the concert and stayed over night and I needed to leave at 1500 the next day so I didn't have too much time to explore so I went shopping at KaDeWe. I know Berlin has so much more to offer. So here's one of many the links I've been reading. I love the fact if it exist in the world you can find it or buy it in Berlin. http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/guides/eu...lin/attractions.html

By the way, there is a great Thai massage shop on Keithstrasse where I had a great Thai massage. I will definitely go back to get another massage when I return to Berlin in a few weeks.

Thanks for your tips on your favorite spots as this is a good point of reference for me.
evilbill
KaDeWe?!? I dunno which is worse, Al Jarreu or KaDeWe (only joking, it's KaDeWe of course wink.gif ).
Lavender Rain
How did one evilbill get so darn funny laugh.gif ?

I'm hitting the Kurs'damm my next visit. So where do you recommend I shop in Berlin?

The concert was good he was singing songs from Porgy and Bess and singing with the NDR big band. I enjoyed it, but not as much as hanging out in KaDeWe the next day and feeling the vibe of Berlin as I walked down the street. I'm heading back soon as I'm not through with Berlin yet.
evilbill
Al must have been in particularly poor form if KaDeWe was the highlight. wink.gif Spaß aber beiseite, there is no Berlin "vibe" on Ku'damm - only the ker-ching! of cash registers hungry for tourist currency.
DragonSlayer
I love area around Hackescher Markt.

Hi All...

I was curious about people's fave places here in town. Not necessarily the tourist attractions, or cafes (though it can be) I'm just curious about the places that make Berlin special to those expats here.

Obviously some of us are here for work, some for the Berliner Luft, some the the Berliner Beer- but there is a reason we came.

Sorry if it's an silly question. I keep seeing the 'why are you leaving' thread popping up, but I'm curious about the places that keep people here!

there's the "List your favorite spots in Berlin" that you/others might want to add to .. hint, hint wink.gif

one new reason for me is the fact that my video store has the entire works of "My So Called Life" on video. And not only that, the sensitive and cute video clerk dude has an "I love Jordan Catalano" tee shirt. Perhaps this is the finest example of cross cultural love ever!

My living room with black bin bags over the windows, and Leonard Cohen on the stereo.

Thanks to whoever merged them. I looked for something like this, but didn't find it!

- Stadtbad Mitte, lovely building but you wouldn't guess so from the entrance
- The way the u-bahn goes through the BVG building next to the Technische Museum
- Hackesche Hof
- my terrible urge to sing 'The Passenger' on the s-bahn
- flea markets (not that I buy much)
Cathi
I think somebody already mentioned Hackescher Markt, so maybe I'll just add something to it.
It's a little Café which is full of posters of old movies. It's a bit dark in there because it's got very high walls but I always feel very comfy.. smile.gif

the way s-bahn passes by pergamonmuseum, in both perspectives (from the s-bahn and also from inside the museum)

maybe it's just because i love museums in general

Yeah, Kadewe, that's the ticket...

Yep, I love Kadewe too. When I was in Berlin last weekend I got lost in Kadewe for five hours.

I have to get some more hang out places in Berlin I like. I'm coming back to Berlin on July 11. I have tickets to see Diane Krall in concert at the Zitadelle Spandau and then on December 1, I have tickets for Sonny Rollins at the Philharmonie.

So the next time I come I'm going to be scouting around for alternative hang outs when I'm not at the concert hall or Kadewe.

I do like like the tiergarden to sit and relax. But next time I'm going to check out the zoo.

The oberbambrücke at five in the morning. The view in this light is just so gorgeous. Gotta love it.
And the bio-markt on Boxenhagener Platz on saturdays is another favorite. So much yum yum for sale there, and the vibe is nice.

I also like joining the Turkish crowd for a grill in the Görlitzer Park, and Mauerpark can be a trip too.
cosine
"The Bird" is nice when i'm in the need of a little boost/feeling out of place/homesick/whatever.. super english friendly and eating a nice steak always melts the stress away.
And they have Schneider Weisse.. my favorite wink.gif

I used to go to one of the Romiosini places near mauerpark a lot. A well rounded meal for under 5 euros is always nice.
Pizza Loona always treats me right too.

Oderberger I wonderful in the warm months though in general. So many nice little places there.

Clubs / etc... the whole bar 25 and club de visionaire thing was really nice for awhile, i think it's gotten a bit too popular though, too many people to enjoy it the way I used to enjoy it now (and spooky ones at that). Hanging out on the terrace at Weekend club is super nice, they have it open early now and you can go hang out at dusk with some friends and have some drinks..

My favorite spots in Berlin:

After two years: I love being in my backyard on my balcony with my husband and BBQ going drinking a couple Berliner Pilsners, while the neighbors kids run through the sprinklers. Saying hello to my neighbors who are also on their balcony watching the kids with a BBQ going.

I also enjoy going to Hackescher Markt and getting an ice cream cone at Hagen Daaz and sitting in the square people watching, listening to the music and timing how long the hookers stand out there before getting picked up and until they get back. I don't know why this amuses me - but it's a good laugh.

I love going on the spree boat rides around Berlin that start at Friedrichstrasse. Get a beer, kick back, enjoy the cool breeze off the river and the sites of the city. Cant go wrong.

I am also a fan of Kreuzberg. We lived there for a year and enjoyed the chilled atmosphere of bergmanstrasse cafes and spent many a sat/sun afternoon strolling around there when the weather was good.

I have to second the Potsdamer Platz movie theater and IMAX. It's always a good time, and the Nacho's aren't bad. I get extra peppers on the nachos to remind me of home. Then it's time for a couple Weiss beers at Loenbrau brewery next to the theater.

Hello, I lived in Berlin a few years ago and will be coming back in the fall/winter for two years!!!

Hands down, my favourite spot in Berlin is the Ankerklause on the Landwehrkanal and Kottbusser Damm. No better bar in Berlin. PLus they have a juke box which contains Johnny Cash singing Four Strong Winds...If you get that, you'll know where I'm from.
mcbecerril
I've found myself going to the cinema in Potsdamer Platz also asking for nachos with extra jalapeños just to feel at home smile.gif.

I love a park of unknown name in Dahlem, very close to Thielplatz.
Mauerpark and having picnics there.
Simon Dach Strasse.
Knaakstrasse.
Doners at Yorkstrasse.

... i'd never finish and I've been here only 4 months.
