Hello dears,

I am moving to an unfurnished flat and I am wondering if anyone knows where I can find cheap household items like pots, pans, vacuum cleaner, electric jug kettle, bed linen etc? The shops that I have tried so far have shocking prices (z.B 5€ for a set of for teaspoons). Any ideas or?

Shops like Woolworth are quite reasonable I believe, guess you have one there.

Alternatively, shop in tengelmann and collect enough hearts stickers to be able to redeem everything you need biggrin.gif

What shops are you trying that are so expensive?

I have seen some cheap shops in Wiesbaden if there is nothing like these in Mainz (Can't believe it tho since it's a Uni town). How about Ikea??
Wundebar
Real.
Where is tengelmann?

There is no Ikea here. I have just found out that there is one in Wiesbaden though...

The Ikea is in Wallau, just outside Wiesbaden next to the A66.
Or Real is another option, as someone else said...

Some other ideas: On this side of the Rhein we get the "SüdHessen Aktuell" a weekly freebie from the Newspaper. I suspect the RZ or the other Mainz Newspaper has somethiing similar. There's usually a section in the back where you find adverts for anything under the sun. Lots of household items for next to nothing prices. Also look for "Das Inserat", another a freebie. Sometimes they have a "Haushalt Auflösung" when somebody moves (or dies). If that doesn't freak you out too much you can get a ton of household stuff for almost nothing.

Try googling "Mainz" and "Haushaltsauflösung" or "Flohmarkt". You can get just about anything you want at a big flea market.

Try ebay. I bought a few new ikea sheet sets for 2 Euros for my kid.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. I went to IKEA and got some really good, cheap household items. I also tried ebay but didn't get far because Mein Deutsch ist schrecklich.

Try Tchibo. Cheap and cheerful. not bad quality.
Fwan
Actually Tchibo is expensive.

What you could also do, is look around for little asian shops, they are just like a dollar store.

Oh and let me know if you need anything else, I am moving soon and trying to get rid of some things for free smile.gif

I'd have to say I'd check out Zimmerman's in Mainz-Kastel long before I'd trek over to Ikea.

Going down 455 toward Mainz, you'll pass Otto Sur Ring and about a block later, on your left is a sign pointing to Zimmerman's. It's pointing down a road that parallels a small soccer complex. After you take that turn, you take your first left, and Zimmerman's is on your right. (Sorry, don't know the street address, but 455 and Otto Sur Ring is the intersection with the Metro store on one side opposite a Kentucky Fried Chicken on the other.)

WONDERFUL close-out store with everything from office supplies, to kitchenwares, clothing and shoes to lawn furniture. Some nice basic porcelain dishware as well as 'fun' dishes, toys, sports, automotive, non-perishable food items, frozen foods, wines, too much to enumerate.

Check it out. If you find what you're looking for there, odds are you won't find it cheaper anywhere else. Cash or EC card. No Visa/MC.
