Thanks. I did a little search and found that it is the home of Ritter Sport - chocolate. Can't be that bad of a place!

I live in Dettenhausen, which is about a 10 minute drive away. Waldenbuch has a small old historic center, and a few nice restaurants. It's between Stuttgart and Tubingen, but linked to Boblingen (I think). It's just an ordinary tplace, though there's lots of hiking and biking in the woods. And Tubingen's a great little university town.

We are actually in the process of purchasing a home in Waldenbuch. There is an entirely new subdivision being built on the top of the hill on Dresdnerstrasse, and the homes are mostly upper end. The views are fantastic, and it's a nice, quiet area close to hiking/biking trails. We've spent some time in town and the majority of the people we met were very nice. And yes, the Ritter Sport factory is located there...

Wow! Well, I just wanted to say that we found a house. It is in Waldenbuch and I think it will be great. Seems like a nice town for a family.
I just wanted to say that since we arrived, we have looked at lots of rentals. I couldn't believe the poor quality of some of the houses. Very very very poor. Most of the time, the lights didn't work, trash and dirt everywhere. The landlord or realtor would say '' this will be fixed if you take the place". We have owned houses before and rented them out and I would think it would be best to show the house at its best..especially when commanding top rent. Anyway . I am just so happy to find a larger, modern house that has a fenced yard for the dogs.
Woo Hoo!

CONGRATS! As I said in my previous post, we'll be moving to Waldenbuch in the spring. What street did you end up renting on? We'll be on Dresdner Strasse.

I think that Waldenbuch is really pretty to drive through. They have some good restaurants and hey, there's RitterSport!

Justin,
I tried to google your street - didn't show. It sounds like a street near our house. We are on Vogtlanderstrasse. They are building new houses just down the road.
We did the buying think in the UK thinking is was a good idea (which is if you stay 5+ years). I am just curious what the costs are in buying in
Germany? What kind of fees, taxes, solicitor fees, translator fees, do you have when you buy? The bad thing about the UK is the stamp duty that you pay when you buy. I am still not convinced that it is a good thing to do if you are here only temporary.
However, Congratulations to you. I have to say the houses here are definately built better than the houses in the UK.

We are in the new subdivision being built just up the hill from you, and the street doesn't show up on Google, yet. Subsequently, I could not find your street, either.
You are correct, there were several fees we have to pay, but they were rolled into the loan. We will be here in Germany for at least five years, and if we do end up moving, we'll rent it out through Laura.
Have you explored the trails out in Waldenbuch. I am considering riding my bike to work when we finally move and have been told there are trails that go directly to Panzer and Patch from Waldenbuch. I know there is a trail right next to the subdivision there, which will be quite convenient if it's the right one.

Maybe I spelled our street wrong - it shows up on google. Its not far from Berlinerstrasse, if that helps. We are happy to rent here. We just want a crash pad and plan to ski and travel a bunch. With our house in the UK, I think we spent too much time worrying about things (putting in a garden and patio, installing lights, bathrooms mirrors, blinds, etc...new houses come pretty bare in the UK)
Congrats on the house. Our buying experience in the UK was good, it didn't pan out as a financially as big as we thought is would. From another thread on TT, it sounds like fees for buying in UK are cheaper. But, it seems the Germans can pass along a lot more expenses to the renters compared to the UK. I was amazed. The housing situation that is in the US is slowly hitting the UK but not as bad. I know people who bought in the UK and sold and made +100K pounds. The market isn't like that right now. It is leveling out.
Good luck. As long as your mortgage payments are lower than the rent you can command for your house, then you shouldn't have a problem (financially).

JustinM -- How did this trail work out for you? I am considering a position in Stuttgart (Kelly Barracks) and starting to look at the area. It would be great to bike or even bahn/bike if that is possible? I am looking into how far the main gate is from the Bahnhof or even the trail you reference here.
This forum is a great resource! Lots of good information to consider for the move!
Thanks in advance!

Carpe,
I have not ridden the actual trails from Waldenbuch to Patch/Kelley/Panzer. However, a guy who works in my office showed me a map he bought at a local bike shop that has all the trails in this area. Looking at it, riding from Waldenbuch to any of the bases is doable. But there are a few hills to contend with, which, in the big scheme of things, makes for a great ride.
PM me if you want a great realtor contact. She does a lot of new home purchase/rentals in the Waldenbuch area.
