I lived with a group of Germans for more than 2 months and surprisingly everyone showered at night (except me) and not in the morning. I found this surprising. Is this the normal thing to do here.
What are your showering habits like TTers. Germans never cease to fascinate me.

Ive never heard of this, but an old flatmate in Glasgow used to shower every night to save him a few mins in the morning.
That said, being a weegie, its a wonder he had a shower at all.
I couldnt care less when they shower, more bothered about why the guys all demand you sit down for a slash! thats mental.
No time to write now, sorry, must go and take a shower.

I shower in the evening, and I am not German. I always have, I need to wash the day off me. I hate showering in the morning.

Personally, I find this practice of showering at night and then not in the morning really quite gross and unhygienic. I just can't figure out how some one would feel clean and fresh in the morning to present themselves to the world doing this. This is how I see it. At night while you're sleeping your body perspires. How can you not shower in the morning? I think this practice could have something to do with the Germans being afraid to take a shower in the morning as they are afraid they may catch a cold if they leave their house after showering. But nevertheless, this to me way nasty. So I shower in the night and in the morning. But to each it's own.

I often shower at night just because I cannot get my butt out of bed in the morning. As I know this and to avoid not showering for a week I do it in the evenings. Or when I can get up really late I do prefer showering in the morning. Depends on my schedule.
By the way, my French roommate does the same. Not just a German thing.

I know a lot of French people who do that.
When I lived in Mauritius I used to take a shower in the morning and in the evening. I kept this habit when I moved to France and my flat owner called to tell me that I was the person who used the most water in the whole building and that it was too much ... actually when she gave me the details I realised that a lot of French people may not shower at all considering the amount of water they use!!!

while you're sleeping your body perspires.
So you should shower 3-4 times a day, your body perspires all day long, not only when you're sleeping. Hygiene is important, but there's limits to everything. A certain level of B.O. is one of those small things that make people different from plastic Barbies.

Although I generally like a shower in the morning, I used to shower at night occasionally when I lived in Munich, to wash off the smoke smell after an evening in a particularly fuggy pub. I just couldn't stand the idea of waking up in the morning with my skin and hair still smelling of ashtray.

Why don't you make yourself go to bed 45mins earlier?
I'd feel like I had done the "walk of shame" into work today if I hadnt had a shower. Not even half awake yet, cant imagine how much worse i would feel if i hadnt had a shower.

As for me, my day aint so good and fresh if i dont take a shower in the morning...so, i usually take shower in the morning...Sometimes, i take twice depending on what i do (ex:if i do sports, etc) and how i stink...lol..!
But i live with Germans..One of the guys takes shower before he sleeps (says that he is too lazy to do that in the morning) and the other, in the morning...so, it depends from person to person...not really based on particular region..! :-)

There should be some type of B.O. meter to let someone know when they need to shower. Preferably allowing their friends and loved ones to set the sensitivity rating.
I shower in the evening depending on what is planned for that evening or in the morning depending on what occurred the night before.

Well then it must be a Texas thing, because I don't have a strict showering schedule beyond "daily" either - it always depends on what else is going on.

sometimes I have a long soak in the bath before I go to bed, and then I'll just have a quick wash in the morning, otherwise I shower in the morning. I used to shower both morning and evenings but my skin suffered massively - became so dry!!
If you stink if you don't have 3 showers a day or the like, then perhaps there's something wrong? over-production of sweat or something? especially if you find it necessary during winter months.

good for you - actually showering more than once a day is v bad for your skin - there was a whole Oprah programme devoted to it!!!

I can't handle not showering in the morning. Blech!!!
Mornings and before I sleep without fail. Any kind of weather! Doesn't matter. And a damn good exfoliating scrub every other day. Skin still glows, lots of moisturiser! Husband used to get a nice telling off if he didn't shower. Nothing makes me feel as good as a shower before i sleep and a shower as soon as I wake up!

Hate to mention this delicate subject but don't the 'evening showers only' people sometimes do 'things' in bed other than sleep?
I find morning showers to be more refreshing and help me to 'wake up'. To put on clean clothes for the day without showering first is, imo, less than hygienic. Although I always shower before starting the day I also have a 'good wash' or, especially in summer, another shower before bed.

Exactly - but I do shower as needed. When I go to the gym after work, I usually shower at the gym, go home and put my jammies on and go to bed. Usually I don't sweat while I'm sleeping and I decide the next morning if I need another shower depending on how I slept (read into that what you want).
But, 3 times a day - no chance - it's horrible for your skin - especially in winter when it's already dry.

I can't believe how many people here only shower once a day. I shower at night and in the morning. The morning one is more to wake me up properly. I don't know how you people can go to bed without showering. You're lying there in the sweat and dirt of the whole day.

Showering once a day? Whatever for? Once a week whether you need it or not is enough, and Friday evening is the best time.
Sure someone will claim that this another example of my anti-US/UK/Anglo-Saxon bile... but honestly: how would anybody perspire in winter unless they go to a sauna?
Taking a shower too often is not only an unhealthy habit because the soap or detergent destroys the natural protective layer which mother nature puts there, it is also a gross misuse of our natural resources and one of many reasons for global warming, like taking your car to work or fly Ryan Air.
Ask Al Gore!
Mariposa
Nov 19 2007, 1:15 pm
Yeah I don't sweat much either... in the summer sure, but then I also shower differently... I just prefer not having to get up even earlier. Today though, when I knew I can sleep in, I showered in the morning (or at noon rather).
Brushing my teeth is something I do four times a day or so, depends on what I am doing too, but three - four times sounds about right.
