Emissions stickers for cars driving in Berlin

Info on the new "Umweltplakette" requirements

I caught the tail end of a news item the other night, which I gathered was saying that you need to display some sort of eco-related sticker if you're driving in Berlin, and this was a problem for temporary visitors as the issuing garages are not open at the weekend.

Have I got the wrong end of the stick, and was it just referring just to the normal emissions TUV plaque, or something different? Sorry to be vague!

It seems to be the case now. I picked up a new car on monday, and they gave me the sticker (it's a lease car). Some green thing with the license plate written on it. Never heard of it before, but I know you need it for Frankfurt as well.

You do not indicate in your profile where you are located - this might make it just a bit easier to give advice.
If you were in Germany a garage in your local area can issue these stickers - provided your car satisfies the requirements.
If you are visiting from UK I very much doubt if a German garage is authorised to hand over a sticker for a vehicle not registered in Germany.

Thanks folks.
I've printed out the info about the Feinstaubplakette. I live in south of Berlin and the car's going in for its TUV next week, so hopefully the garage will deal with it.

Seconded. However, far worse are the others who try to out-green them.

Latest example that really makes you worry about those that govern us: the Umweltministierium (& we know who runs that) propose a law requiring ALL aircraft to be transponder equipped. ALL AIRCRAFT to include gliders, hang gliders & Gleitfallschirme. The reason? Its connected with all these windmills that are wrecking the landscapes - apparently people are disturbed by the flashing red lights on them so idea is to turn them off & they would only be activated for a short time when a transponder-equipped aircraft is close by. This is supposed to raise the acceptance of such windmills amongst the populace.

There are two snags to this which shows these guys great gasp of matters:
  • Gliders, hang gliders & Gleitfallschirme are only permitted to fly between sunrise & sunset ie not at night.
  • Just having a transponder on board does not mean that it transmits a signal - it only does this when interrogated by ground radar.
  • Would be more practical to require FLARM on board which many gliders have anyway - but this might be too cheap & effective.
So effort has to be invested to persuade these idiots that they are talking bull****

As of 1 January 2008 all vehicles must have a Green Emissions sticker to drive within the limits of the City of Berlin. If you are stopped by the polizei after this date without one, you will be fined.. (30-40 Euro's) for first offense.

But i heard they can be purchased almost anywhere smile.gif

Good Luck, Boy the polizei are gonna be busy next year hahahaha!!! wink.gif

Apparently you need a new certificate or badge for your car indicating you've paid a new environment tax when driving in central Berlin from the 1st of January.
Has anyone been to get one of these? Does it even apply to a foreign car, and is it a matter of coughing up the cash or will my noxious emissions be tested too?

In the end this was very easy to get, even with limited German. The chap just looked at my UK V5 registration document and handed a green sticker over.
We went to the first one here and it cost €5

The Umweltzone boundary is actually the inner S Bahnring not the city of Berlin limits. The fine for crossing the inner S Bahnring will be 40 Euros and a point on your license at Flensburg. From the first of January 2008 you will need either a green or a yellow sticker to legally cross this boundary. Only from the first of January 2010 will you need a green sticker.

There is a General information section on the Berlin website with a link to an English pdf explaining everything in detail.

Most, if not all, garages are selling the stickers. They do, however, seem to vary in price. You can consider yourself to have a good deal if the sticker only cost 5 Euros. Obviously not if you spend a further couple of Euros on petrol to get there. ph34r.gif

you can actually get them at every 'Pit Stop' branch and the cost is 5 euros. All you need is your registration for your car
