Can an American register to vote in the state of New York from abroad? That was my last place of residence. A look online tells me that one must have been a resident for the last 30 days. Is having a driving liscence/state ID enough? Otherwise I assume I could register for the state of my parents?. I mean, HRC is prob gonna get the Dem nomination in NY anyway, so to make a difference, better do it in another state, right? I did not vote in the last election because I had not been to the States prior to 2003. Thanks if you can help.

I support Joe Biden for President and encourage you to visit JoeBiden.com to learn more about his campaign. You can follow the link below:

Thanks.

You'll need to vote via absentee ballot.

Vote From Abroad. You will need to wait until after January 1st to register and request and absentee ballot. However, if you join DA, then you will be eligible to vote in the Global Primary between Feb. 5th and 12th. See here for more details and to keep up to date.

I'd check with my local election office to verify if Euroval's advice about waiting until Jan 1 is true

You can vote absentee from overseas in New York State, even if you've moved permanently overseas. --I'd suggest contacting the board of elections for the county you lived in for requirements.

(I signed up for it right before I left last year. They SAID that it was good until further notice, but I'm not sure I believe them.)

You can register to vote from overseas absentee at the web site BeeGeeJesus cites above. The OVF online voter registration program only prompts you for the information required by your state and will provide you with the proper election official address to send it to.

States have many varying laws about voting. Due to the early primaries (it may all be over by February 6th), if you want to vote in your home state primary then you need to request a ballot now.

However, requesting a ballot for the primary will not necessarily mean that you will automatically receive a ballot for the general election. Registering to vote and requesting an absentee ballot are two very different things. You can register to vote at anytime! Requesting an absentee ballot is something altogether different. No state that I am aware of allows you to request an absentee ballot prior to January 1st of the year of the general election. Some states do allow long term residents abroad to register as such and even fewer send absentee ballots somewhat "automatically", but that is not a given. Even within a single state, standards may be applied differently depending on the county or voting district.

As a qualified Voting Assistance Officer, I (and the Federal Voting Assistance Program people) suggest that you don't rely on what may or may not have occurred in the past and most definitely request an absentee ballot for every election that you wish to vote in. The good natured voting officer in your county or district may have retired and some hack gets the job and purges you from the list because s/he applies the law more strictly, then you be scrambling at the last minute wondering what happened.

Whether you use the wizard at Vote From Abroad or the OVF site, you still have to go through the same process and voter registration is by law non-partisan and both have to live by privacy policy laws.

With Vote From Abroad, if you happen to be a Dem and wish to join then that is good too. As a Member of Democrats Abroad, you will be eligible to vote in DA's Global Primary taking place between the 5th and 12th of February all around the world. This will be the first internet based Primary where you can vote online. No absentee ballot request needed, you just have to be a registered member. We will also send Delegates to the Convention in Denver and your vote will most definitely count!

If you are on the other team, you can still use the Vote From Abroad site. Unless you opt in to join DA, we will never know who you are and your privacy is protected. It is basically the same with OVF, but there you don't get a chance to join DA and become qualified to vote in the first Global Primary put on by Dems Abroad and you won't get to vote via the internet.

Voter registration, voting and voting issues=non partisan

Wanting you to join Dems and vote for Dems=partisan

Thanks, Randy. My question was specifically about registration, not voting. So you are saying I should use the website to register, and once that's done, either vote in the state of my last residence (absentee) or in the Global Primary? How many delegates does DA have?
