I have been looking online for places to live in the Stuttgart area. Has anyone been to Schoniach? All opinions appreciated.
Katrina
Never thought I'd ever see that place mentioned on here - I lived there for 6 months during an IBM work placement years back.
Hope you have a car - at weekends there's only one bus an hour out of there PDF.
Pretty small place and think I lived there too long ago to really give an accurate opinion of how it is now, also depends on what you're looking for.

Shonaich has got much bigger, It boasts decent restaurants, supermarkets, bakeries etc. I'd even go as far as to say it's quite a busy little town. There are quite a few Americans living there because of it's proximity to the nearby bases. I'd live there if a decent house came up.

Katrina and Nicole,
Thanks for the help. Good to know that it is a nice place to live - the house looked nice online (but it is no longer available).
Yes we will have a car. The important thing for me is to live in a town that has good schools and other activities for small kids.
Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Shonaich has got much bigger,

Just looked in Wikipedia (German section) & neither of the above spellings could be found...

Its in the English Section. Not much there.
Here it is!

Well I'm currently living, during the week only, in Steinenbronn which is just outside of Schönaich and that is pretty quiet so I go into Schönaich for a bit of excitement. No, actually its quite nice, pretty decent Chinese restaurant there but also you're reasonably close to Böblingen for big town thrills!

Schonaich is not a bad town. We have a few friends that live there, and most have small children (between 3 and 7 years old). I believe the 3 year old goes to the German Kindergarten there, and the others go to the military school at Panzer Kaserne. Like darmstadt mentioned, if you need to get "big town thrills" you can always head into Boblingen, which is quite close.

Correction of my original post above.. I meant to write it's Kaltental (Vaihingen) where I'll be staying, not Kaltenbach.
Today worked out a route using the S1 from Vaihingen, then a bus from Goldberg - Boeblingen down to Schoenaich.
I think it'll work but I'll still accept all advices!
cheers!

If it's the number 760 bus, then that's what the EFA of VVS recommends too, generally.

S1 to Böblingen, then Bus 760 to Schönaich. Looks pretty straightforward to me.

Alana!

I lived in schönaich for a year whilst on workplacement at IBM.

Kato is right you get the 760 from Schönaich and its gets to Böblingen bus station 5mins before the S-bahn leaves for stuttgart or 4mins before the S-bahn to Herrenberg. Which is plenty of time to walk through the subway to train station, if your not sure where to go just follow the Lemmings they'll show you the way.

I can tell you that from Schönaich to Stuttgart HBF it takes about 1 hour by public transport, but Vaihingen is shorter. biggrin.gif

I have lived in Schonaich for 3 years now and like it a lot. The only thing it needs is a decent pub. But it is close to the bases and a nice little town. If anyone needs any more information just post your questions and I'll try and get you the information you need.

I've been in Schonaich for two years... love that it's close enough to the bases if I need an "American fix" but offers opportunities for immersion also. The community has an "English Speaking Dinner Group" (expats and military/civilian). The town offers free German-Language classes (well, it cost 1 euro). And I have a list of all the restaurants and markets (to include outdoor/bio) if anyone needs it.
