Balls, dinners, and posh events in Frankfurt

Ideas on where to go and get all dressed up

I don't miss the UK very often, but perhaps a little in the run up to Christmas, when traditionally School, Uni, and then work have had black tie events. These are often very drunken, but people dressed up and all looking good, at least at the start. Since being here, I've not had the chance to don the formal Kilt or DJ. Perhaps I'm not circulating in the right social circles, even the FFT work party is not remotely formal, unlike the London work party.

Anyone got any tips?

Rilana
yep - same. Will also need the opportunity to wear some of those dresses etc. at some point. Can't let them turn in to moth food. Eyes and ears are open...but I'm not holding my breath!

Might have to go back to London for that.

Well ball season started 11:11 11.11 -- beginning of Fasching / Karneval -- join some organizations and watch the local magazines. The American Chamber of Commerce in Munich is having a black tie ball tonight for Thanksgiving, but it's not posted on the website as it's only for members. The Lions and Young Lions have things. Someone in Frankfurt should be able to tell you what publications to watch, similar to Time Out or whatever.

Unfortunately, you've already missed the Schafhof-Festival and the Sportpresseball.

However, you haven't missed the Frankfurter Opernball.

These are the not-to-be-missed annual black tie piss-ups in Frankfurt. Get your company to pay for them, and they're even more fun :-)
Lavender Rain
If you're interested in traveling a bit there are some great balls in Vienna in January. I'm going to the Doctor's Ball on January 26th and I'm really looking forward to it.
AshleyM
Keep me posted on these events..I have several dresses that need some attention! (As do I since I have not had an excuse to get really dolled up since I have been here!)

Cheers!

what about organising something ourselves ?

That is a nice idea. But I don't know I think that overstretches most peoples organisational skills.

I am trying my best word this in a way so I don't get lumbered with organising it all (which is what usually happens)
Rilana
the Frankfurter Opernball sounds great, but a bit beyond my budget (especially with all the bad luck I have been blessed with as of late), at least some of the tickets listed (e.g. 600€) are very expensive - I'm not really sure what precisely is the difference between each of them...e.g. what is a flanier?
AshleyM
Well, I am sure if there were enough of us we could do something. smile.gif

Yep, it's always fun to get dressed up and get drunk.

What is everyone doing for New Years Eve??
Rilana
yes, it is... smile.gif I do miss it. There's something terribly 'therapeutic' about it...and with all the moving and half of my things in storage and all the stuff that's been happening as of late I've been feeling more like cinderella before the fairy godmother turned up laugh.gif

Maybe we could organise our own ball, if there were enough people... unsure.gif

I have no doubt that between TT and the Frankfurt Dining out club we could find enough people. I could roll off 50 people from top of my head for sure biggrin.gif It is just the thought of organising it that makes my head explode choosing venue, men choice, music, tickets etc eeeeeeeekk
AshleyM
@Rilana: "Scrub the floors Cinderelly..Take out the trash Cinderelly" Yes, I know exactly how you feel! Where is my Fairy Godmom with a trunk full of Manolo's and Valentino gowns!?

Hmm..I don't know how to go about doing it, but if you need any help I have nothing BUT time on my hands!
Rilana
true - the thought of organising it is a wee bit off-putting. Perhaps we (PM, AshleyM and moi...feel free to slap me for just nominating you!) can be the organising committee and share the workload?! I think it would be a wonderful idea, if we could pull it off.
Purple Muffin
I need to think about this one. The thing is I have organised lots of things like this before and every time I say to Prob+1 that I'll never do it again.

If there is a proper committee set up and others actually participate then maybe but in the past I have always been lumbered with the donkey work!!

I have a think..
Rilana
I know what you mean, the same usually happens to me, however I have never had to organise anything of that scale before...so your expertise would be invaluable. I can only say from my part that I would be happy to take on an equal share of the organisational work but as you, wouldn't want to be left hanging with the whole lot. I think that as long as everyone is committed and it's organised well and the workload distributed well from the get go, it would be quite enjoyable too. Or am I being really naive?
Purple Muffin
No you are right it is quite enjoyable as well. I guess we need to first of all think about how to got about it - organise caterers and room, disco etc ourselves or see if there is somewhere that would do the whole lot for us...
bobD
i *may* be interested in organising something.

time allowing, interest being maintained...
Rilana
ok...so should we perhaps meet up and discuss? I could see what I can find out in terms of possible locations etc. in the meantime? If we all do a bit of research, meet and see what we have come up with and how best to go forward? I'm sure there are a number of places around that could be used, just need to find out what and where and how to go about it. I don't think we need to have too much for an initial discussion, just some ideas.

I'll go and ask the Marketing department here too, they are always organising events for something or other and might have a few tips.
bobD
sure. I'm working nr the Rossmarkt so somewhere innenstat would be cool. Maybe lunch or after work is best. Next week maybe?
Rilana
ok cool, I also work near there. Next week sounds good. I can do Tuesday or Wednesday...How's that for you? and Purple Muffin?
Lavender Rain
There's the AIDS ball at the Kurhaus in Wiesbaden on December 8th. I don't know if you Wiesbadener have seen the poster to advertise this. The tux with the nipple piercing is interesting for the conservative town of the capitol of Hessen.
AshleyM
Oooo it sounds so exciting.

How formal? If we do the whole tux and gown, that may put alot of folks off. Cocktail dresses and suits?

I will be completely honest, I know nothing about Frankfurt. (Except for the shopping and MYSushi..lol) ((And if anyone wants to meet @MYSushi sometime let me know!!))

Maybe a hotel with a ballroom/conference room. Or a restaurant with a dance floor?

I will say that I am very good at decoration and can help in that department!
scotster61
The AIDS charity event is in the Kurhaus on 8th Dec tickets are €22 -€44 from the tourist office in Markt Platz. We have a few friends going but unfortunately we cant make it as we have friends visiting from Glasgow from Wed till Sunday and have our weekend planned or we would have went too, hope you enjoy if you get dressed up and go, this is the poster thats causing a stir to some people in our city..

looks like this thread has gone down the toilet. seems like there is not much craic in frankfurt ! i did try and spark it !

seems like not many expats in frankfurt !
AshleyM
Ooops. I had forgotten about this thread!

Ok, so lets say that those of us who want to have a posh evening get all primped in our finery and go hit a local bar/pub/dance hall!

Do we really need to organize a huge event for the whole 10 people to show up? laugh.gif

If folks can go barhopping in santa suits why cant we in suits and cocktail dresses?

(I live about 45 min from Frankfurt, but I will make the drive for it!)
Rilana
I guess it just doesn't feel the same when dressed up to the nines in a bar where everyone else is wearing sweatshirts and jeans. But why not. I'm up for it.
AshleyM
Why not!?

I have always said "no fools=no fun!"

People should dress up more when they go out anyways...sweatshirts are for the gym! tongue.gif
Rilana
totally agree.

Ok, so let's get a date in the diary for January perhaps?!
AshleyM
The "Opera" sounds good.. wink.gif

I am usually up for anything that involves being a social butterfly and an excuse to wear my Jimmy Choos! laugh.gif

Are there any posh martini bars in Frankfurt where the clientele do not wear dollar store couture?

Burns' Night*? Coincidentally, this falls on a Friday in 2008 - so we could kill two vogels with one stone - the need for a splash, and Action's proposed Friday Night Beverage Club.

Thoughts? Can't wait to see what the locals would make of my kilt . . . .

Kuzzer

*it's the 25th Jan, but of course - you all knew that already
Rilana
funny you say that, I was thinking of picking up some Haggis whilst back in the UK!!
bobD
Burns night. good idea. My kilt has not been out to play since I've been here, only ever taken back to the island for weddings and Hogmanay.

That is not true! I think it is just people are busy over Christmas. People will not respond to an event not fixed yet but am certain as soon as we have a date, price and venue there'll be plenty of feedback.

I have spoken to some other people who would be interested in helping to organise so we should still go ahead - organising commitee are you still interested? As I said above though as much as I love organising this kind of thing I just really do not have the time especially now the ski season is here.
action
yes of course I am interested, I also do not mind helping out in the organsiation where I can. I am called "action" for a reason !
AshleyM
Burns night? Sounds familiar...the poet?...Robert? *waits for the thwap to the head from angry scots* Sorry I am not completely familar with ALL the holidays! laugh.gif

However, any excuse for a celebration is fine with me!

Let me know what I can do to help.
Kuzzer
<thwap!> cool.gif
AshleyM
*sniffle* I've read a few of his poems! Doesn't that count for something!? wink.gif
