Christmas markets in Hamburg (2007)

This year they're open longer, from November 26

The christmas market(s) will start on the 26th of November, like the big one in front of the city hall, the one at Gänsemarkt etc.
Because so many people (also tourists) demanded that it would be open longer than usual, they will have it until the 30th of Dec. I think, which is awesome, at least in my opinion, lol...
PayolaDL
Agreed! It's my favorite time of year here in Hamburg. I love the smells of cinnamon and pine. And the gluewein is fun way to keep warm.

There will be a special christmas market on Dec. 2 and 3 ( yes, Sunday and Monday9 in the Baseler Hof Hotel.
It's a Victorian Christmas Market organised by the British consulate.

I'll add more info when I get it

In which town/city? Your profile doesn't give us a clue but AFAIK there is no British consulate in Hamburg (thread title)...
Stormbringer1690
HEM -true, the is no proper consulate in HH any longer just an honorary one. But since one of the member, Gwen Cochrane, is working for the honorary consulate and we still have the same level of contact and coworking there is not a great deal of difference. I am sorry if my comment was confusing. Gwen actually is organising the market.

Since the topic was Christmas markets in Hamburg I figured it was clear that I was talking about the event taking in HH.

A Victorian Christmas Market is taking place on Sunday 02 December from 12.00 - 18.00 hours and Monday 03 December 12.00 - 18.00 at the Baseler Hof Saele, Esplanade 15 (by the red telephone box).

Entry is free and all are welcome

Given that your profile is close to empty there was no reason to assume you were in Hamburg (particularly as there is no consulate as such).

Sounds great. Do you have better address details?
I'm in Bremen and have been to Hamburg a couple of times but I'm not sure exactly where you mean?
Sorry! unsure.gif
Hammonia
What else is there to say than that it's at the Hotel xyz and the street is Esplanade, house no. 15?

Even a Bremer will be able to look at a map? rolleyes.gif

(sorry, couldn't help it, it's the old thingy between Hamburger and Bremer...)

She's from East Yorkshire... (I'm from the West side...)

Baseler Hof Hotel is located in Esplanade 15. It's near Dammtor train station and the Alster.

Location on the map

btw, after so many years in Hamburg, think you can be considered a Hamburger - or a Schleswig Holsteiner in your case wink.gif

If you consider the "Ehrenämter" I have - probably yes: Öffentlichkeitsreferent in my club for over 20 years, Segelflugreferent for just a bit less and Landessegelflugreferent for 3 year sad.gif
They only applaud when you say you'll do the job for another 2 years sad.gif

There will also be some amazing Christmas markets in Luebeck (only 50 minutes from HH by train.) Luebeck itself is such a beautiful little town and I can't wait to see it decorated with lights. They will be hosting a big market with over 400 stalls, a crafts fair, a historic market and a Fairy Tale Forest with decorated trees and recreations of the Grimm Brothers fairy tales.

You can find info here:

The market in Lübeck is really very nice, but I highly recommend (if ever possible) to go there on a weekday - on weekends it's just jostle, you can hardly move and don't really get to the booths - we've been there last year and it wasn't fun...
Only go there on weekends if you enjoy being punched and kicked and pushed...

Christmas markets are enjoyable, but as with many things having to do with Christmas, less is more. Don't you get irked seeing Christmas displays up before Hallowe'en? Same thing here. Keep the Weihnachtsmärkte to the Advent - ie in December - and knock it off on the 24th. It's overkill otherwise.

YES! I am looking so forward to it, I'll go there for my b-day next week and won't forget to also check out the famous Niederegger museum and café, since Marzipan is almost on the top of my food list lol...

YES!

I think about Christmas a week or so beforehand (fits this year as I'll be returning from Denver on the 15th...)

I support that. Its like asking "Penny for the Guy" on the 7th November...

Another good Christmas market is the Medieval market in Lüneburg this coming weekend Dec. 1 - 2. They dress up in Medieval costume to sell their wares, there are musicians and street performers in costume, etc. Great atmosphere.
Hammonia
have you been there before? Is it as packed as the one in Lübeck?

I love Lüneburg, it's a lovely little town. Hmmmmm...could combine it with a visit at the old Dubliner... methinks wink.gif

Question about the X-mas markets in HH, how late are they open each night? This is my last week / weekend before returning to the States for the holidays and I'm stuck working till 9pm each night. Is it worth taking the train in that late? (I'm in Alsterdorf) Also, where is best to visit? I stopped by the Rathaus on Tue morning, any other recommendations?
Hammonia
Most of them close at 9 p.m. - my colleage said yesterday she came across Rathausmarkt at 9:30 and it was all dark.
I seem to remember from last years that it was longer...

Aaaanyhow: Santa Pauli on the Reeps is open longer.: sun-wed - 11 p.m., thur-sat. til 1 a.m.
But it's an ähemm, err, rather unusual Christmas market... ph34r.gif
tor
there were several stands open at Gänsemarkt until about 10 last night. We were standing...um...drinking... by one at the Rathaus and at punkt 9 Uhr, with no warning or anything they just shut the window... und thcüss!

i forgot to ask if maybe, just maybe, they stay open longer on Friday and Sat. but i doubt it.

last night (Thurs night) after the HSV game I had to transfer to the U1 at the Rathaus. So by chance I walked up to see if anything was open. The X-mas Market was closed but there was a Hot Wine stand (sorry, forgot what you call it here) open by the U entrance. It was open till 10pm (22h) and the gods were smiling on me because the tent was full of women n only 4 men!! wub.gif ahhh, I'm gonna miss Hamburg...

Does anyone know if the Christmas market is open on Sunday?
Hammonia
which one do you mean - there's hundreds.

yes, they are open.

Went to the Lubeck Markets today. It was great and well worth the visit. Highly recommend it, but don't go on the weekend, it will be packed with people, unless you like that... wink.gif
