I'd go for a used or refurbished MacBook

I'd second the Macbook, for laptops Apple really does make some great hardware.

But not at the prices quoted by the OP. Even Used MB's go for close to the Orig. selling price.

do you mean

a) Do we know of any good special offers somewhere?
or
b) What should I expect in terms of spec (speed/features) for that amount of money.

If a) check out the online shop at www.magicdevices.de. The special offers are marked with red text in the lists. Expect 100-300 euro off their normal price.

The new Dell Vostro laptop range starts at €379 (excluding delivery) - this price is with the AMD chip. But cannot say if they are any good as just looking to buy one myself. The reviews I have found via Google give the Vostro range a thumbs up.
Apparently you can phone them up and change to English spec (Keyboard & OS)

More info here:
Dell Vostro (Deutschland)

EDIT: Ok just noticed that this price also excludes 19% VAT.

It all depends on what u wanna do with the computer and also thinkin' abt the future..! If it is just for internet use and doing other normal things, then u can find many cheap pc's..! But if u r doin' any programming stuff or loading or running huge servers or other programs, u need to do a bit of research and buy what u want..!

Sometimes, they sell cheap pc's at normal stores like LIDL, Aldi,etc...so u gotta check that..!

Also, check for "Dell" offers...Their pc's are good and reliable..! U can just call them and ask for options and also make them configure what u want and what not in ur pc and they will take some weeks time and deliver that to u..! The best part of dell is its reliability, good technology and also the technical support they provide..!

Exactly. What is the reason for it? They depriciate like jewelry.

i thought the reason for it was that you have apple fan boys who will pay over the odds for anything with the apple name on it. Granted , the mac notebooks have some nice features (the magnetic power cable, fast boot up for example), but when you look at what you get for your money (procressor power, memory, screen size, disk space, i.e. the important things), and compare mac books with pc notebooks it's a no-brainer to me, you get a regular notebook, unless money isn't really an object.

Have a look at the Asus Eee PC its only $399.

It won't be a big game player, but it will Deff be enough for web surfing, email, IM, and typing up documents.
Best of all it runs Linux (Xandros) so there is no Microsoft Tax. Its also small and lightweight.
