I know there is a place in Rosenheimplatz where I can rent English DVD's.
Does anyone know exactly where it is?
And what is the selection like?

Most (all?) DVD sold here still have the English soundtrack as well as the dubbed German.
I'd check on the box before you buy though.
I rented a brit film last year and it only had German!
That IS very unusual though... as SparkaHck says: Check the packaging.

Another annoying thing about some DVDs here is that you can't turn off the German subtitles if you select the English soundtrack!
Unless of course you have a hacked DVD player, like me

I'm not sure about a rental place on
Rosenheimerplatz itself but if you go back a little, accross the bridge back onto Zweibrückenstrasse you should find "Film Passage" right next to
McDonalds. I haven't been there in a while but they had a large selection of English VHS in the basement. You can buy DVD's upstairs and I should imagine you should be able to rent them there too.
Hope it helps.

DH has lived in the Munich area most of his life. Even he is not aware of a good place to rent English language DVDs. There are a couple of places in
Schwabing he knows of but he says that they are dirty, dingy, and he feels like he is doing something against the law when he goes in them. (Maybe that was English language porno he was looking for...hmm...) Anyway, not what I'm used to in Mapleleafland...big, shiny store...huge selection.

Try "Millions of Images" on
Amalienstr. In the halcyon days of VHS domination they were the primary source of all English videos and now their DVD range is just as good. In most cases whether you rent or buy a DVD it'll have English and you don't get stuck with the subtitles on. I've bought about 75-80 DVDs in Munich and never a problem. The only time I've seen them in German only is when it's a bargain basement movie (some of the Grosses Kino-Kleine Preise stuff) or if the original language was not English to begin with (the 3 Colours series).
Failing that I've got a Turkish mate who gets new releases for about 8 Euro which are imported to Istanbul from Russia. Top quality, proper inlays, the whole lot
Maybe I should put my list here and you can rent them from me. I've about 150 DVDs in total and about 250 videos. Perhaps I can get a corner in Grinner's shop.

I've got around 150 DVDs as well (but very few videos). I was never that fussed about renting, as in the UK the rental stores charged around 5 EUR for new releases. I could get region 1 DVDs with more features, sometimes before they even hit the cinemas (let alone the rental stores) for around 3 or 4 times that, so that's what I used to do. That way I can watch them again whenever I like, when I had friends over, etc.
I'm always kind of wary about lending DVDs to strangers, but those I know (including 3 lions) are welcome to borrow stuff from me if I've anything that appeals. I'll try and update my movie list when I get the chance.

I recently walked by a new DVD rental store somewhere in
Schwabing and went in for a look. It was basically a 24h Automat like a big bank machine. As far as I remember it had some kind of thumbprint recognition thing built in, or was that just a dream? Anyway it's cheap if you bring back the DVD within 3 hours or so, but canny remember prices atall.

What is it with all of these short-term rentals over here? I thought the usual "bring it back the same day, before we close" thing was bad enough - but 3 hours? How are you going to get home, watch Lord of the Rings, then get the DVD back within 3 hours?
Anyone know when those disposable DVDs are supposed to be coming out?

You can do that in lots of places on Schwanthalerstr and other areas. Just look for anywhere that advertises "Kabine" and I'm sure they'll be able to sort you out.

Actually one of the films I do want, which I have not seen for years is 'It's a wonderful life' with James Stewart. I think I will struggle to find this one though.

They do in Asia, although they're used more for teen shagging - then movie watching.

Wonderful Life is brilliant. As is Harvey, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, in fact pretty much anything with Jimmy Stewart in.

The self-service automated rental shops are called 'Cinebank' and they've recently cropped up all around the city. Pretty good if you're looking for the most recent 200 hollywood big-budget films; not so good if you're looking for quality movies. The 3 hour is not a fixed limit, they just scale the prices so that it's very cheap if you return it in that time, cheap if you return in 6 hours, and the same as a normal shop if you return in 24 hours. If you live next to one, it can be a good savings.
I saw one on
Rosenheimerstr. which is next to a "California Mexican" restaurant called Serrano's that I've never been to. Anyone eaten there and have recommendations?
the one in isartor next to mac d's was pretty good (haven't been in a while).
if you don't mind breaking the law and if you have a dsl or faster internet connection, then you can download just about any movie new or old, if you know where to look

Egg,
Assuming that one does have DSL and does know where to look, if you're downloading stuff in MPG format, what's the easiest way to get it onto a CD in such a way that it'll play on a standard DVD player?
Malcolm Spudbury
Sep 8 2003, 3:16 pm
Use Nero. It can make a CD in Video-CD (VCD) format.
yep, drag and drop into a nero vcd template will do the job.
also, if you are looking in the right places though, you'll be able to find nice 'cd images' in a bin/cue format - thus removing all need for brain work.
Malcolm Spudbury
Sep 8 2003, 3:32 pm
However, if you burn VCDs from MPG, you'll find that unless it's encoded in really crappy resolution, it won't fit on a single CD - you'll need to use 2. Also, the best quality rips are in DIVX format, which I don't think Nero can burn as VCD.
To be honest, I think you'll better off just burning DIVX versions to a normal data CD and watching them from your PC through windows media player or some such. I assume your graphics card has a Video-Out connection? If so, you can just plug it into your telly...
I wouldn't bother with the internet. Unless you like watching worse-than-VHS quality Div-X. I've borrowed a few from a friend (he has EVERYTHING!) and was not too impressed. The resolution is always low and that makes things burry.
Wait 5 months, rent the DVD for 2 euros, and enjoy 200x better quality, better sound, extras etc. Even if its 9 months later, are you really that bothered???
Obviously I'm not a film buff . But if you were, you wouldn't be watching DiVx.

Try this place
English video club, theresienstrIts pricy, like Euro 4 for overnight, but it has 1600 DVDs. and 5000 videos.
If you have a PC with a large harddrive like 80GB, you can copy DVDs onto your hardrive, about 9G for 2 hours, and play them with some special software. I think its called AnyDVD.

Or, right around the corner, on
Amalienstr. 15, Millions of Images. They even have a nice selection of foreign films in English or with subtitles. Unless prices have changed, it's 3 Euros a day I believe. It used to be even cheaper if you brought it back the same day, but I haven't taken advantage of that in a while. Open Mon-Sat, 10am-Midnight.

Have you thought of Film Passage near Isartor?
€2-3.50 per night, really good selection, people that can advise you in
English on what's worth seeing. They'll even rent to you if you don't have proof
of address or that permit thingy, if you leave a deposit.
Mind you most of the interesting stuff, like European films with English
subtitles is on VHS rather than DVD.

I have to agree with MadAxeMurderer, English Video is definitely the best place to rent movies in Munich. Their shop is a little hokey and hard to find, but their selection is
massive. And they have all the tv series, documentaries and loads of not-so-well-known stuff as well as all the blockbusters. And it's heaven for people with code-free DVD players.
Plus, they have specials for every day of the week, so e.g. if you rent 3 DVDs (or videos), you get an extra one free
and you get to keep them all for two nights instead of just the one you're paying for. That makes it a great deal, I think!
They're like 200ft away from
U-Bahn Theresienstr., so it's easy to get there.

Thanks a million for the English Video rec.
My boyfriend and I walked all over the place looking for a DVD rental shop and felt it was crazy that our new neighborhood has so much EXCEPT this one important service. Must have passed that doorway at least 10 times--we live very close--and never would have noticed the teeny sign.
The guy's pretty nice too.

Careful with the DVD's though. The "Pal" system is different. You need to have a DVD player that is adjustable to play both types or it just won't work. The DVD's that I brought over here are Pal 1 and Deutsch DVD's are Pal 2. Just look at the back of the DVD and locate the pic of the globe. All DVD's here have a "2" in it. My "1"s are collecting dust...

I thought they used NTSC in the U.S.
Are you sure you're not looking at the region coding? (1=USA&Canada, 2=Europe).

They do, although most DVD players can output both formats (unlike most video or laserdisc players).

I suspect he is, due to the fact that (1) there is no such thing as "PAL 1" and "PAL 2" (although there
are different versions of PAL which use different vertical frequencies) and (2) the regions of DVDs are displayed in a little "globe" on the back of the case.

Or alternatively, profundo could have his DVD player modified (or perhaps even find an unlock code for it on the net). Or maybe he even still has his old US DVD player...

Yeah, sorry. Region settings not Pal. A friend of mine told me about it and I didn't research it that well. Editor Bob moved my previous comment from another thread when I was refering to "taking DVD's as a gift to US friends". That's why I started with "Careful".
I do have US 'region' (thanks Aquatic) DVD's but I am moving back to the US in a couple of years, where my US player awaits. And I think I will be taking all these DVDs that I am collecting now, along with my player from
Karstadt and just have the best of both worlds!!! literaly.

months ago and several posts back, Randy mentions "self-service automated rental shops are called 'Cinebank'" that have popped up around the city? Does anyone know of one near the Josephsplatz or Hohenzollernstr neighborhoods/U bahn stops? The doctor has just sentenced me to two more weeks bed rest - yay! no work! but after the 5 days I've already spent, I've watched my entire (small) collection of DVDs/videos, as well as severals seasons of shows borrowed from friends, 3 Lions Fellowship/Tower videos, and am bored (there's just but so much time you can surf the internet and read. yawn.). I plan on visiting English Video, but wanted to know what the other options in my neighborhood might be. Thanks!
