Hi everyone!
I'm on my year abroad for university and have somehow ended up in a teeny tiny hamlet called Eisenkaul, part of Kürten. I need some English friends and most of all something to do with myself in the afternoons after the school I'm working at finishes. The family I live with are lovely, but I need a bit of variety and a bit of English!
Does anyone on here live nearby, maybe in Bergisch Gladbach or something? The public transport connections here are ridiculously bad (or maybe it's normal for rural areas, I'm a city girl through and through) so anywhere further than Cologne (a 30 min bus ride followed by 20 min train) isn't really possible for me and even then I have to get on the 6 or 7 o'clock train to be able to get home in the evenings!
Thanks,
Leah

I live in Bergisch Gladbach (Bensberg), and there are some other Brits and Irish dotted around. If you can only manage afternoons it might be a problem meeting up with people though, as most people will be at work.

That's true, I forget that sometimes as most of my friends from uni are being assistants at schools like me at the moment and we finish at lunchtime. The only problem is I'm the only one in NRW!
Gladbach isn't so bad time-wise as the family sometimes come and pick me up there or from the S Bahn station I can get a bus just after 10 I think but it's a round-about way. The latest direct bus is just before 8 from the S Bahn.

Hey!
I live near Wipperfurth (in a very small town also

)...about 20 minutes from Eisenkaul! I'm from Canada and I'm here until the end of February. I have been here over 8 months and still haven't found any english friends! Do you go to wipperfurth often? Maybe we can meet up!

Hey, I live in Cologne and generally have plenty of spare time (on extended holidays). If you like perhaps we could meet up one afternoon. I am happy to meet you half way in Bergisch Gladbach if you are interested.

Well, seeing as there's some more us now, why don't we have a meetup altogether, maybe go to the Christmas Market in Bergisch Gladbach? I'm free every afternoon and weekends, so I can work around most things!

I too am free most days so can be fairly flexible. Towards the latter half of december I will be out of Germany most of the time so in the near future is better for me.

It looks at though there is a few people available. Who is free for next monday afternoon in Bergisch Gladbach? I have never been to the place so would appreciate if someone with better knowledge of the area could suggest someplace to meet. As close to the station as possible is best for me although I could probably use a little extra exercise!

I'm free! I can probably be there about 3.30 once I've been home and eaten. As far as I'm aware, the market is on the Marktplatz which is the bus stop before the station for me, so I could meet you at the station if you want? Anyone more local than me, feel free to correct me!

Still on as far as i go. I have not been to Bergisch Gladbach before so any advise on getting there and then the market would be good. I was planning on getting the train from Cologne at 3. Would this leave me a enough time to get there for the meetup? 1530 was it?

Right, we'll be meeting at 3.30 at the S-Bahn station, so if anyone wants to join us that's where we'll be!
If you can only come later like mandrax, we should be easy to find or you could pm me and I'll tell you my mobile number.
See you tomorrow!

Bad news for those who I had arranged to meet this afternoon. Due to emergence unexpected commitments I will not be able to make the meeting this afternoon. Sorry to all those affected and about the short notice. I really want to meet you all so perhaps if people are still keen we can reschedule.
Sorry, J

@dimibu
I dont know of any regular meetings of English native speakers although I would imagine that the Irish pubs would be a place to start especially when they are showing rubgy or the like. Your best bet might be to start a thread on TT with an event in mind and see who is free or google 'englisch stammtisch' or something to that effect and see what you turn up.
