nataras - are you still training? the hubby and i are new to the area and would like to find a triathlon club and/or training partners. we've completed distances up to the 70.3 (half ironman) but have been off of training for over 6 months, so we are starting fresh again. anyone else interested in tri, please respond as well!

Quick question - I saw on the schedule at Olympiahalle that they do "triathlon training" Monday and Thursday evenings. I'm thinking about attending tonight. Does anyone know what it entails- and if we can just show up? Thanks --

Do you mean this?
http://www.swm.de/de/produkte/mbaeder/schw...hwimmhalle.htmlIt say on the website that you have to register in advance (there is online registration), the cost is 105 Euros, plus the swimming pool entry fee and it is a 6 week course.
Mondays 7-8pm still has places but the 8-9pm course is booked up for the six weeks 5.11.2007 - 10.12.2007
They also have the "Freizeitsport-Treff" which is included in the entry fee to the pool and appears to be something you just turn up to. This offeres swimming technique coaching, although it doesn't say at what level, Mondays 7:30 - 8:15pm in the teaching pool:

Thanks for the links! We were actually at
Olympia Park yesterday, and we saw a schedule posted outside the swim halle that listed numerous activities by times, for each day. We saw "Triathlon Training" from 19:00-20:00 on Montags and from 20:00-21:00 on Donnerstags. I'm not sure if that is the same thing as either of the links you posted? The days/times don't seem to match up with the 105EUR training, or with the Freizeitsport-Treff...We didn't end up going tonight as we decided to attend the US citizens event at the Consulate. Maybe we'll try it on Thursday...

Hi! I'd like to try triathlon and I think tomorrow I'll contact the MRRC group to have some information. In any case, I'm considering short distance like the Olympic one (1km swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running), my times are 19mins for the 1km swimming (I know I can improve it) and less than 41mins for the 10km running. Unfortunately, I don't have any time for the cycling...
So, if I'm not too slow for you, let me know so we can train together.
For Kitkat64, if you don't like swimming you can try duathlon it's a running-cycling-running race

Alright! So it is time to start training!
I am new to TT but have been in the Munich area since August. I have done a few triathlons over the last 10 years. My most recent tri was last year's Wildflower half ironman. The main goal being to complete it and not necessarily to compete! I enjoy swimming more than biking and I participate only for the fun of it and enjoyment of being outside! That means I am not FAST!
Seeing as how I really haven't done much since last May 5th when it was Wildflower, I really need to find some like minded tri people out there.
Only gone on two long rides since I have been here. Pretty sad, I know!
Gotta get back in the game now that it is January. From reading past posts, I would really like to do the Munich tri in July (?) and possibly the Tutzinger one as well. Looking at only doing Olympic Distance now, as I am really out of shape, unless I get really motivated again.
Any advice, or cycling buddies, masters swim groups, etc. I am used to swimming with a group 3 times a week. I have looked into joining the MRRC. Emailed them on arrival, they said come anytime! Unfortunately, I don't know where or when? Any info? Anyone done anything with their tri group?
Thanks!

I, too, am ready to get back to training. I moved to Munich in Sept and asked around a bit (on this thread too!) but no one really seems to have any information about tri training with the MRRC. I also swam with a masters group 3x a week before moving here, and frankly I've found the swimming to be very difficult in the public pools. Granted, I have only been to
Nordbad (with Bron) and I need to check out the Olympiahalle but I've found that I can't properly train in the Nordbad pool with loads of Germans breast stroking all over the place...When I visited the Olympia swim hall in the fall, there looked to be a triathlon swim training, but I need some help understanding what I was reading. Also, if we join the MRRC does that include the cost of swimming with the tri group? I feel a bit thick-headed about this but it is very different from finding triathlon groups in the U.S.
I've done Sprint, Olympic and half-iron distances in the past and am looking to do any of those distances this year. I should be ready for a sprint/olympic race by May so hopefully I can sign up for some of the Munich area races. As for training, I usually run alone and for now, am biking on the trainer (like everyone!) however I definitely want to join a group for some longer rides this spring. Swimming is equally important to do with a group but I'm not sure there are masters swim groups or the equivalent...anyone out there swim with a group?
Also, it would be great if someone who has trained with the MRRC for a triathlon could post some info to this thread

There is no specific training for triathlon from MRRC as much I understand because I am a member of this club. They have a few trainers who help in Koppletraining (means how to shift from swimming to biking & biking to running). They have a triathlon team too.
During early summer they have small training sessions called Kopple training (helping for techniques for shifting from swimming to biking & biking to running). They do have some small triathlon practise during some weekends. They have some triathlon workshops (2 weeks in Italy- Palermo this year). Members have to contact the trainer by email (it is in the website) and based on the response he will schedule this training. I mean it is not decided & depends purely on response & interest from members. Last year I had been to 1 mini practise triathlon & there were only 2 of us!!!
This is my observation being a member of the club so probably if not helpful can be some update to the last post!

So, ok, I emailed the mrrc and got a response from a triathlon trainer named Stefan Plate. He said to come to the School Swim Bath in Freudstraße at 8p.m. on Wednesday Feb 13 or any wednesday thereafter and he would explain everything. I told him I am not looking for any specific "training", all I am looking for is a group swim, bike and run to join in with a couple of times a week. From the sound of it, the mrrc has group swims at two different school pools (all to themselves) at least 5 days a week in the evenings. There is a group spinning class on Fridays, and when the weather is better they have group cycles. Of course they also have group runs almost every day of the week. What I hope to find out from Stefan is basically how much I pay and what I get for my money. It is worth it for me to have a guaranteed group to train with each week - I have enough training manuals that I don't need any specific coaching, just companionship to get me going on those hard days when I just don't feel like doing anything!!
If anyone wants to join me on Wed. evening, please come along - nataras, bron, etc.

Hi, saw this by chance on one of my rare visits! I frequent www.tritalk.co.uk/forums/index.php a lot more.
SarahD what will happen next Wed on the 13th, is there any training, or just a chat? Do you have the address for the pool, I can put it in my satnav, as I live out in the wilds of Erding!
What's this about fair weather riding; I've got a Half & Full Ironman to train for, no such luxury

I'd certainly be interested in group weekend rides and an evening swim session.
So who else is thinking of going along then??
Maybe see you next week
SarahD
Feb 8 2008, 11:01 am
Hi Jorgan - is that website just for folks in the UK or have you found that other Munich people use it too??
As for the meet-up on Wed, it looks from the website that a group of swimmers from the mrrc meet at this particular pool 2-3x per week and at another school swim pool the other days of the week. So, yes I think there will be a group of people there swimming (training), as well as coaching available from this guy Stefan. I do plan to swim, but I also want to get as much information from him in english about the mrrc to make a decision as to whether I should join or just train here and there with people, since my german is not up to snuff enough to glean much from the website!!
I swam yesterday morning with Bron at Olympiabad (7am open) and it was perfect. I see from an old thread that there are some others that swim at Olympiabad on Tuesday mornings from 7am so I may settle into a Tues/Thurs morning swim and a Wed evening swim...
I am definitely still on the trainer, and am skiing on the weekends so I can't offer much companionship on the bike. It will be another month or two before we (husband and I) venture out into a group. I plan to do a half-iron in september (after several olympics this spring/summer) but there is not an IM in my future so I do not feel the *pressure* that you must feel!
My husband was signed up and paid for IM Florida 2007 this past November, but we were relocated to Munich in September and the move was too disruptive for us to get back over there. I imagine he will sign up this fall for the 2009 IM Germany or Austria.
Are any of you running the final leg of the
Ismaning winterlaufserie next weekend? It's the half-marathon distance...

The swimming session with MRRC is Tuedays and Thursday - Ridlebad - Get off at Swanthelerhöhe U5 line and walk 5 min time 7.45 to 9.30pm
The swimming session with MRRC on Monday and Wednesday - Freudstraße - Get off at Harthof U2 line and walk 10-15 min 8.15 to approx 9.30-9.45 pm
I know Stefan Platt well because I have trained for swimming under him for 8 sessions in Oct- Dec07.
I go to Freudstraße on Monday undergo the training session.

@nataras Thanks for the directions - very helpful. How much does it cost to be a member of the mrrc? And is it a monthly or yearly thing?
We live on the U1 off of Rotkreuzplatz but can get to the
Feldmoching stop quite easily. Are you training just for the Olympic distances coming up or something longer?
Glad to hear that you know Stefan. After Wednesday, I may try out Monday evenings as well. Do you prefer one of the pools over the other?
If this weather holds out, would anyone be up for a ride next Sat? We are skiing this weekend...

The membership costs 30 Euro for 6 months. It is as good as free:))
Well I train with MRRC 4 times a week with Monday swimming, Wednesday is Tempo training (a little tough) & Friday's spinning and Sunday long distance training. Although the option to do this 3 sport is available 4-5 times a week you can choose which is good for yourself based on your requirement.
Both the pools are 25 mts and are school pools. I choose Hartof because I find it easy to go and little less crowded for the training. The other one is in the city centre so many people come.
Well I will do my first Olympic distance this summer so long distance is far away:)))
I will buy a racer bike some time in April so would be interested then. Till then it is
Ismaning and Munich Halb Marathon on 20th April..

Feb 8 2008, 5:30 pm
SarahD, I'm around next weekend.
I printed-off the Half Marathon entry form with the intention of doing it as it's not far from Erding. The only thing is this time of year the weekends are the only time I get to do decent length rides, so I'll be riding twice this weekend and twice next. Running isn't an issue for me, I've always done it, 2:09 last Sunday (about 18-19 miles in awful conditions back in Scotland!) so no worries for me 'zu FuB'

It's the cycling I need to get sorted for the IM, regardless of the weather: as 'Chopper' Says, I need to HTFU on the bike
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EY7lYRneHc I saw this on TriTalk...(caution a lot of F* words & not politically correct!!)
There are a couple of guys from Munich on TriTalk, one posts as StuF - he's doing Austria IM70.3 & Challange Roth like me, but claims only to be a fair weather rider! TriTalk is worth a look as there are some useful threads on there.
How far/where do you plan to ride?
Cheers

Some of us have swapped the skinny wheels for skinny skis - it's still training. Will be back on my bike from Easter onwards.
Regarding swimming, the Thurs a.m. swim was good, the pool was nice and empty and I would be happy to have a regular meet up at that time (note to self - talk less, swim more).

I'm in Erding, so mornings are no good. I was in Munich getting a visa today so had a few hours to kill & went to the Dantebad. It was slighty amusing to see women lane swimming topless

The combination of the weekend's training and the 50m lengths soon had me knackered, but I'm glad I popped along to see what it was like.

Just another question about MRRC. Are there any other obligations in addition to the membership fee? e.g. do you have to marshal at a certain number of races or anything like that? Just as well to be forewarned.

No! There is no such obligation. You can join the training as a true sportsman who enjoys the sport:)

I told you so Bron!

I've only heard of that evil marshalling from you re: the rowing club. Now there's no excuse - we should stop in to see Stefan one Wednesday evening in the next few weeks. Maybe he can watch our stroke and take our 30 euro all at the same time...I will try to convince Ian to come along.

It's not that I mind helping with club duties, I just like to know about it before I sign on the dotted line. I could grumble about my rowing club, but if I start, I won't stop and that would be a bit boring for everyone...
Anyway, that all sounds good and I will deinately think about joining.

Anyone planning on coming over for the Erding Stadttriathlon on 22 Jun? I entered the other day; couldn't miss my local race! They have a 'sprint' (0.4/20/5.9) & Std Dist race (1.5/48/10). I've also entered Amberg Stadttriathlon on 11 May, again Sprint & Std Dist available. I think the 1500m swim is in a 50m pool for Amberg. Also got Ironman '70.3' Austria in May & of course Roth Ironman Dist in Jul. Not sure after that - probably some physio

Hi All,
I have registered for the olympic distance race at Erding and Karlsfeld. Will be doing a few more.. like Tutzing or Buga
Will start training at Regattastreke probably in the coming few weeks.
A nice time would be Saturday or Sunday morning or a holiday (a few coming up in May). Anyone interested?
Getting in the water would be a bit early but can start with Running - Biking combination..
SarahD
Apr 7 2008, 12:33 pm
@nataras Yes, very interested in training at the Regattastreke. Keep us posted on your plans. Will you be doing the
Olympiapark sprint in May? I (+husband) am planning to do it but also keen on the olympic distances...we will definitely do Karlsfed and hopefully Erding - which day is the olympic distance, Sat or Sun? Hubby has the bmw open on the Sat I believe so I am hoping the olympic is on Sun. Either way, we can race on Sun so whichever one is that day is the one we will do...Are there any half-ironman distances in the area? We are planning to do Monaco 70.3 at the end of the season but would love to do others closer to home.

@Sarah. Here are the triathlons which might interest you. All these are within Munich and can be reached by S Bahn or underground.
18th May: 6. Stadt-Triathlon München 2008
22.06.08 15. Stadttriathlon Erding
20.07.08 20. Karlsfelder Triathlon
27.07.08 4. BuGa-Triathlon München-Riem
17.08.08 Tutzinger Triathlon
I wanted to do the sprint distance (as it is first triathlon) at
Olympia park but now the entries are already closed. I am a member of this event so I was not allowed to do it. But I know the entries are closed.
I checked with a few of my colleagues in my club and I was told Karlsfeld is getting filled up. Hence I suggest you register soon. I was told they have have limited entries for Olympic distance (because of space) so better get yourself a seat:)))
I am starting with Amberg (a place around 2& 1/2 hours from Munich) on 10th May. It is a sprint distance. So I would be starting immediately after my 1/2 marathon in olympia park on 20th April... Will keep posted

@nataras Crap. I was looking at all of these in Feb, which was too early, and now time has flown and it's too late! Argh. I will sign up for Erding and Karlsfeld today. Nataras, isn't Amberg 11 May? Glad to see the Oly Dist is a later start

I don't know whether to stay there the night before - if anyone else is thinking of doing so could you PM me if you are? The 44km bike will go in the relative blink of an eye - as I did 133km yesterday.
I was tempted by Karlsfeld, but it's only a week after Challenge Roth! It's a toss-up between Ironman 70.3 Wiesbaden & Tutzing in August I think. You'll like Tutzing Nataras, fast flat bike & just one hill on the run.
Geez, I'm itching to get going now, I'm going stir crazy with all this training lark!
Anyone up for 150km this weekend?!

Amberg is May 11 - a sunday...unfortunately I've just gotten word that my in-laws will be here that week, departing at 11.45am on May 11! Seeing as how we see them only once or twice a year, I think I can say with confidence that we will not be doing the Amberg tri

Good thing I asked the hubby before signing us up, but nataras - thanks for the link to the online registration. I'll keep you posted on Erding & Karlsfeld.

So, there I was looking forward to the 50m Freibad opening here at the beginning of May, only to find the Hallenbad shuts on 28 Apr & the Freibad doesn't open until 10 May

I don't know why they need 2 weeks 'slack time' as the Freibad is already empty & being cleaned-out as we speak. Not exactly German efficiency.
Anyway, with no pool in Erding for the 2 weeks leading up to my first Tri on 11 May(!) I need to find alternatives; okay so there's the lake outside Erding, but it's pretty small. I heard some people mention the Regattastrecke, what will that be like end of Apr/early May?! I believe there's a swimming area there? I know there's the Dantebad, does anyone know what the best time to go there is?
On the subject of the Regattastrecke, if anyone wants to meet at the end of this month, early May, or even sooner (brrr) I'd be interested in meeting-up. I'm expecting a new 'Snugg' wetsuit from the UK in the mail soon, so need to test that in any case.
I also have 2 spare wetsuits, so if anyone wanted to practice some open water swimming but doesn't have a wetsuit, they'll fit someone 5'8 to 6'0 ish, (I'm 5'11 and average build - but they stretch loads), one of them is quite a nice 'Orca' suit. Worth trying/borrowing if you don't want to splash-out just yet... pardon the pun.
So, if anyone fancies doing some open water practice - I'm definitely interested, it would be good to meet some fellow English sprechers at some point!
Cheers

If you are thinking about Dantebad, then I would suggest Olympiabad. They have 3 dedicated swim lanes (which is better than swimming around loads of socializing germans!) and there are quite a few triathletes training in the mornings...also, nataras is looking for a wetsuit - I think to buy but he might like to borrow too!
As for open-water swims, I am ready to start. The weekends are not always good, so if you can swing an evening after work I would be keen!

There is the Regattabadesee - about 500m long and just for swimming or there is the main 2000m rowing lake which is conveniently marked with the distance every 250m. It warms up fairly quickly as it's not that deep (there was some nutter swimming in there on Friday night). Just a word of warning for swimming in the rowing lake - the rowers can't see you so you need to keep a look out and not swim in front of the boats. There's a list of when there are events on at the lake
here, these are not good times to train there.
