I was just wondering if there is anyone in the Kaiserslaughtern-Darmstadt area that would like to meet up for drinks..and does anyone know of a good place to go?
I am new to the area and would love to meet some Yanks or any other English speaking folks for a friendly chat and a brew!

I moved here to Kaiserslautern from Sweden two weeks ago. Don't know much german yet and I'd love to meet some new people since I don't know anyone here. I'm up for some drinks or beers! =)

Wow! A response!
I here I was thinking that I was the last of my kind in this area..(the english speaking kind that is..lol)
I have yet to find a club/bar/pub that looks like a good spot...but I suppose I'd have to leave the house for that.

Are you a "desparate housfrau" too?
My husband and I moved here for his work, we have been here since August. Jobs are scarce, but my house is verrrry clean..lol. I am actually learning how to ugh...cook.
take care, talk to you soon!

At approx. 100 km distance between the two, I would hardly consider Darmstadt and Kaiserslautern as being in the same "area"

I hear English-speaking people everwhere... it's like.. unreal..
Anyway, I moved to Germany because I have a German boyfriend. He lives a bit further away tho so we only meet in the weekends. I'm working here in K-town, in the computer software industry. Tend to stay late at the office, so my tiny apartment is not so clean, and there is definitely not being any cooking done =D
What kind of jobs are you looking for?
Cheers!

@martina lol..yes I know. But I used to live in Seeheim-Jugenheim and I am very familiar with Darmstadt.

I am quite fond of the place and have no problem making the drive!
I was thinking of going to the weihnachts market around the weekend of the 15th in Kaiserslaughtern. I must have my designated driver (husband) with me because I always collect a few gluhwein cups.
As for work...I have gobs of office and banking experience from back in the states and left a very good job to come here. Sadly I speak just a bit of german..(well enough to say "ich sprechen ein bissen deutsch") ((I don't spell it very well either!))
So that's the story...the things we do for love!

Howdy all !
There is another thread similar to this one, but for Darmstadt/Griesheim. So far, we're working on something at the Darmstadter Brewery (since it's right next to the main train station). I'm not sure if it will work out or not, but here's the link if you want to take a look:

Hey all,
So I live in Kaiserslautern, but I usually attend the the Mannheim or Heidelberg meetups... I haven´t yet found anyone doing anything similar here (in K-town... that is... ) If there´s some interest to put together a weekly meetup or drinks night or some such, let me know. Perhaps then we can actually put up a Rheinland-Pfalz section in TT instead of being relegated to the "elsewhere" section...

Cheers.

We live in Trier. Where is Kaiserlautern in relation to Trier? Love to meet a few people for a chat.

Hey Turasteanga,
Trier is about an hour north-west of Kaiserslautern, if you drive... I think it takes much longer by train since you will almost always have a connection at Saarbrücken. Let me know if you´re planning to come out here... maybe we can find a few more people in the area to join up for drinks or conversation or something like that. Cheers.

Cool! That sounds like a plan! We drive. Well the other half does, I'm still trying to overcome driving on the right side of the road! But an hour from Trier would certainly be good practice for me and it would nice to meet a few new people
I'll be in touch! And that's not a threat, that's a promise!

Hi guys!
As I live 30 min from Kaiserslautern and used to live in Darmstadt (Seeheim-Jugenheim to be exact!) I am always going to either. (Or Mannheim..or Heidelberg...Or Frankfurt for meet-ups!!!)
We like to visit the "big cities" to get out of our little village on the edge of nowhere!
Just a little FYI: Darmstadt is about an hour away from Kaiserslautern, Trier is about an hour from Kaiserslautern in the opposite direction. So if you are like us and like to drive or take a train trip we can always meet!
I don't know too much about Kaiserslautern, restaurants..bars...etc. So if someone else knows a good spot let me know!
Darmstadt has a couple of good dance clubs..Nachtcafe and there is a new one that we have been wanting to try out.
Cheers!!

Well, I don't have a car, so I take the train everywhere

but anyway, I'm always up for meeting up in Kaiserslautern, or during the week, at any place that doesn't need me to take a connection.
So, Mannheim, HD is okay during the week. Saarbruecken, Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Mainz, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, etc. only on the weekends. But I expect all these places aren't close to Trier except Saarbruecken...
Kaiserslautern is pretty small compared to the big cities, but nice enough for an occasional meet-up. There're a couple of spots for salsa dancing that I know of and a few dance-clubs but I've not been to those, yet.
So let's all keep each other posted and maybe we'll have a meet up... Wot say?

Was talking to Dan, mein Mann, the other day and he tells me we've already been to Kaiserslautern. We went looking to do a walk or hike or sommat cos it's supposed to be THE place to go for that. And we couldn't find anywhere to walk! We drove to the centre, it was of a Sundee, so all the shops were closed. So we drove back out and parked in some housing estate and found a wee walk there. But it wasn't easy. There was a Brasserie / Pizza Restaurant near where we parked. Off the beaten track.
Do you do any of that healthy walking stuff or are you just into the ole Salsa?
I had to look up Darmstadt on the map as I didn't know where it was. Is it nice there?
AshleyM
Jan 8 2008, 11:19 am
Sounds good to me!
Salsa dancing is always fun, even though my other half and I aren't too good at it.
Between his short legs and my long ones, we are always stepping on each other's toes! lol! But we always have fun!
Keep in touch! This Desparate Hausfrau could use a bit of fresh air and a martini...or two...or three!
turasteanga
Jan 8 2008, 12:43 pm
You and your other half sound like the opposite to us. I'm the short one and he's the lanky one

I remember I just tried Salsa dancing the one time and the fella I ended up dancing with had a medium to bad BO problem...it wasn't good! Neither was the dancing. But I'd say it's fun. Are you good at the ole Salsa or are you just going for the craic (fun)? In any case fresh air and a martini doesn't sound that bad, might make it a nice beer though instead...plenty of nice beer to be had. God preserve me from Irish beer, especially Guinness!

Jan 8 2008, 2:52 pm
How awful to have a salsa partner that smells like ten week old tacos!
The few times I have been was for fun. ( No fools=no fun!) I love the music...Celia Cruz, Chayanne.
My first instructor was a 4 ft 10 in Brazilian who kept saying "As-lee watch mi feets!"...I couldn't see his "feets" because his head was in the way!

( I am 5' 10"!) So I didn't really learn much...lol!
But if nobody is up for dancing we can just go for drinks. I am not picky!
Oh btw: I live just minutes from the Weinstrasse, so in the summer if anyone is up for a wine tasting trip in the summer...
turasteanga
Jan 8 2008, 7:09 pm
I can safely say we'd always be up for a bit of wine-tasting and drinking and guzzling! Never let it be said we shied away from wine-tasting!
But to get back to topic...when are you guys free for a meet-up then? We were thinking the weekend might suit everyone best. Perhaps next Saturday 12th Jan?
But if this Saturday is too soon, then the one after would be fine too. It seems these things are planned well in advance
1Tennisplayer...can't remember how you abbreviate da, can you suggest some place for us to meet? Ashley, I hope you'll make it too and bring the other half of the Salsa dancing Troupe. I'm assuming people are too busy to meet / would rather not meet on Saturday afternoons...people are generally busy catching up with stuff they haven't had time for all week. So how about early Saturday evening...around 7. Of course if you'd rather meet earlier, let me know. I could be assuming the wrong thing altogether.
So if 1Tennisplayer can suggest a place and if y'all can agree a time and a date, (either this Saturday 12th Jan or the next Sat 19th Jan) well then we can stop talking about meeting and just do it! If you can give the name of a place and the street that would help us tourists find it, cheers!
Let me know what you guys come up with ! Slán Turas

Yay! A couple of wino's!
It's sad to drink alone, my other half doesn't. But he is always the designated driver! I knew I married him for a reason! Hehehe.
Well, my man has a fussball tourney in Darmstadt Saturday, so we probably cant make it this weekend. Next Saturday sounds divine!
The was a couple other folks who responded to the post a while back, then disappeared...I hope they can make it too!

Alright folks! Now we're talking! So here's a plan - Feel free to suggest changes if you should like. I can meet up earlier as well if that works.
Who:
- turasteanga +1
- AshleyM + 1
- 1tennisplyr
- Anyone else who is interested in coming out

Where: Kaiserslautern - Brauhaus am Markt, Marktstrasse 9a, 67655 Kaiserslautern (http://www.brauhaus-am-markt.com/)
When: Sat, 19th Jan @ 7pm
How to get there:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&...460aac872bb204aOnce you see this map, you can specify your starting point and get the route. If you've both been here before, your respective drivers should know where the parking spots are.
There're a couple of places around to park around the area; The easiest lot to find is the one right in front of Karstadt, you can't miss it as you drive into the city centre... but mind you, off-street parking isn't too easy to find here during Saturday evenings. The Brauhaus is centrally located in pedestrian zone. Look for the church and the Burger King. The Brauhaus is opposite both.
So, see ya next Sat.! Cheers.
AshleyM
Jan 9 2008, 10:09 am

Now instead of Hubs driving around for an hour on the street to find the perfect spot for his precious car, he will drive around the park deck for a half hour!

I must say 1Tennisplyr, that is one very professional job...you're not working in an events management place are you by any chance!

The Brauhaus am Markt looks ideal and I'm sure we'll find somewhere to park. It'll be just like being back in Dublin, looking desperately for a carpark space! We'll keep an eye out for Karstadt so.
Ashley, you lucky girl with the designated driver always on hand! Mind you I've been doing alright here as I hadn't mastered the clutch on the car. But no excuses now
Right so, we're definitely on for the 19th Jan. Maybe with our posh new Rheinland-Pfalz & Saarland heading, we'll round up a few more winos, I mean bodies by then. I feel very important now with our new heading
AshleyM
Jan 9 2008, 11:34 am
Hey!
I just noticed that fancy heading!!
I guess it took at least four people on the thread for us to get it!
Oh my..you had to learn how to work a clutch??
You are obviously having more luck than me...I tried it once or twice. The dang care hopped down the strasse like a mad jackrabbit!
Hubs then realized I was a lost cause, and promptly bought a nice automatic.

Oh my..you had to learn how to work a clutch??
I guess you were like Carrie in Sex and the City when she went to LA and was driving using the stick! It's not easy though the first few times.
I don't think there's many automatics in Ireland so I had to drive with a clutch there too. But for some reason I couldn't get used to the clutch in the car we have here. I couldn't do it for love nor money. That was before Christmas. After Christmas I got into the car, promptly cut out but after that I could use the clutch. I was like a new woman!
1Tennisplyr, I think you should go in for the events management. I'd say you'd be a natural!
Yeah, imagine we've got our very own heading! I tell yah, we are moving up in the world! Today our own heading, next week our own board...the skys the limit!
Well maybe that's taking things too far
okay, so where's everyone else in RLP? Don't be shy!

I'd offer, since I love to dance and absolutely adore Fred Astaire and have several movies with him in it.

Does anyone do the waltz & foxtrot anymore???
1tennisplyr
Jan 15 2008, 9:48 am

I have talked my other half into going to the Wiesbaden Opera House this Wednesday to see Tosca...so who knows?

Culture is always a good thing. Even if you don't like it, it's good to be exposed to it. Our neighbours brought us to some Church choir at Christmas which we didn't particularly enjoy as i was mostly classical music we weren't familiar with but we felt better people for being there. Not because it took place in a church but because we had tried something new. Would love to see Vienna...if there's some sightseeing mixed in with dancing...I could be persuaded!
