Hi Everyone,
I've done a search but haven't come across a quick answer--I'm working with HR in my company's german office to get my permit sorted, and they say they need my diploma. Has everyone else provided the physical piece of paper from their University? Or would a letter of degree verification or my transcript saying which degree I received be sufficient?
I think I'm having a bit of a language barrier with my colleagues in Munich--my diploma is framed and in storage somewhere and I'd prefer not to have to go digging it up if I dont have to...
THanks for any advice!

I gave them a really shitty black and white printout of a picture of my framed one and they never asked for anything else.

I had to write to my Universities and my High School to get copies.

All of the companies that I seriously considered working at and which seriously considered employing me required copies of my diplomas during the extended application process. Mine are back at my parents' house in Oregon, so I had to have my mom dig them out, scan them, and e-mail them. I then forwarded the e-mail on to the companies and they considered that satisfactory.
I did not, however, have her scan the English translation of the diplomas (my university is pretentious enough to produce them in Latin--perhaps they think the students will think they're more prestigious that way), so unless the HR people brushed up on their Latin or had them translated I doubt they actually read them. They just wanted evidence that they exist, I suppose. (The names of the degrees on them are the only things in English--they even translated the University name into Latin--who know there was a Latin word for "Pennsylvania"?)

Know I know why German gymnasiums continue to insist on the kids doing Latin, it's to catch out pretentious Yanks when they come over here trying to steal the locals jobs!

I had my university write a letter confirming graduation date and degree on the university letter head and was just fine...

I provided all my diplomas and certificates from high school and university from home and also a certification that I was finished with my master program in Germany.
If you studied here and you want to get work permit after you finish your studies you have to present your actual diploma before getting the stamp in your passport. You can apply with a letter from University, but you need the diploma to get the stamp. At least in theory.

I had to do this for the Deutsche Rentenversicherungs office. You can usually do it online with your university in the States - what you need is a copy of your transcript which should say which degreees you were awarded and when. I did not need a copy of the actually think that I received at graduation that is now framed and packed in a box at my parent's house in the States.
I reqeuested mine on a Monday online and got it within a week in the mail.

I just made copies. That has seemed to work (and this is my 3rd job in Germany).
