Hello everyone,
I've just moved to Griesheim, near Darmstadt. I am not working, and am wondering how I am going to meet people, especially English speakers. I am trying to learn German at home right now, and would also love to meet anyone willing to try to speak basic German with me!

Due to long term military presence in Darmstadt there are still a lot of Americans around (bases close next year I think). Still plenty of folks who have stayed on although not too many on TT. You're a short train ride from either our meetups in Frankfurt or also the Heidelberg/Mannheim crew in the other direction.
Or you can organize a meetup in Darmstadt. Now there's a thought.

There are also lots of expats working at ESA/ESOC/EUMETSAT to hang out with.

I'm in Griesheim too. I was in Darmstadt in the military, then I got out and got a job over here. Moved a few miles and now I'm in griesheim. I'd be up for either a Darmstadt or Griesheim meetup.

I also would be in favor of a Darmstadt meetup.
I just recently moved from Worms to Darmstadt, so I typically still go to Mannheim for the meetups (almost every week). It would be nice to setup something in the Darmstadt/Griesheim area.
If someone knows this area, could they suggest a local spot?

Hi guys,
if you plan a Darmstadt meeting, I will be there with bells on :-)
I live south of Darmstadt, out in the boonies.
Flippyears, are you a guy or a gal?

Hi!
Thanks to an email from Martinamr, I have just discovered that I actually had replies to my post!
I will be heading up north for the weekend, but I would be happy to come to a meet-up anytime next week. If anyone knows a place?
Looking forward to meeting... anyone

Thanks,
Meg (ps I'm female, Martinamr)
martinamr
Nov 23 2007, 1:09 pm
@Hellie: I used to live in Weiterstadt-Braunshardt!
@Flippyears: Now that you've signed your post with "Meg" I figured you were female

I had asked because all other posters were guys, and I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable being the only gal at a meeting.
Re: meeting up; would any of you be interested in a day-time meeting? I only work 1 or 2 days per week, or so, so I have time during the day.

I am not working Martina so I would be up for meeting up during the daytime

Judging by Meg's first post she's not working, either.
So. Can anybody think of a good place to meet? Are you guys mobile?
Martina
P.S. aahhh, the supermarket :-) I thought she might meant a high rise building (towers) near a Toom supermarket.

Unfortunately I must work during the days; however if you can make the meetup later in the afternoon, this would be a great reason to take off early.
But if someone who knows the area can set a time, date, and location, this would be great!

Correct. Its just the local nickname for the tower blocks which just happen to have a Toom behind them. Their other nickname is Papageiturm

My schedule for work varies by day, so provided I have some notice I can probably make anything in the Griesheim/Darmstadt area. Let me know when you pick a place!

Howdy all !!
I'm new to the TT thing but I've been in the Darmstadt area for almost 10 years. I would recommend the Darmstadter Brewery (Braustubl) which is located right next to the main train station (Haupt Bahnhof) in Darmstadt. You can't miss it, it's right next to the CineMax.
@Martina: It sounds like you live out near where I live. I'm also out in the sticks, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
martinamr
Nov 28 2007, 12:08 pm
@Odenwalder: looking at your profile we're the same age, and don't seem to live too far apart - maybe we know each other?
We could play the guessing game - the town (okay, village...) I live in starts with the letter "B"

Martina

Nov 28 2007, 12:28 pm
Hmm, the only place I can think of would be Brensbach. And I don't know anyone out there. I know someone in Frankish-Crumbach, though. Does that count?
Your turn. The town I live in starts with an L.
martinamr
Nov 28 2007, 12:31 pm
Good guess. My husband works in Brensbach. We don't live there, though.
L. Hmm. Lützelbach? No, not likely, then you'd probably know "B". Lengfeld? I don't know a soul out there, though.
Martina
I once met an American guy from Fränkisch-Crumbach. I forget his name, but it was one of those one-syllable ones like Bob, Tom, or Bill.
Odenwalder
Nov 28 2007, 12:34 pm
Second guess was the right one. You're good at this

So, another B that isn't Brensbach? Let's see... there's Billings, but that's so small that I wouldn't even call it a village. Must be Bierbach then, right?
Oh, wait... Breuberg is near Lutzelbach. That must be it since you gave me a hint.
martinamr
Nov 28 2007, 12:38 pm
Bierbach? Never heard of it, unless it's a joke that I as a non-beer drinker don't get
Nope, not Billings, close though. My village has a few more people.
Not Breuberg, either. You might be thinking of the "other" Lützelbach.
Martina
Odenwalder
Nov 28 2007, 12:43 pm
Close to billings with a B. You wouldn't be trying to trick me with "Bieberau", would you? Because that would be Gross Bieberau. And that's about the only 4 out that way with a B (Bierbach, Billings, Brensbach, and Gross Bieberau) that I can possibly think of. That is, unless you're out west or south in Bad Konig or Breuberg. Maybe Beendenkirchen.
martinamr
Nov 28 2007, 12:46 pm
No, not Bieberau. Of which, by the way, there are 2; Klein- and Gross-Bieberau.
Not Beedenkirchen, either.
You've got the right direction, you probably just haven't heard of my village. Probably not a big loss
Martina
P.S. I've sent you a private message.
P.P.S. where the heck is Bierbach?

Nov 28 2007, 12:54 pm
I am sorry! I didn't mean to break up the guessing game, but I just wanted to add that I think the Braustuebl would be a great meeting place.
Does anyone have any objections?
Now just a date and time?!
Odenwalder
Nov 28 2007, 12:54 pm
Bierbach is between Frankish-Crumbach and Wersau, if you were to draw a straight line between them.
martinamr
Nov 28 2007, 12:55 pm
Braustübl - that's where I live! Starts with a "B". Oh, drat, I already outed myself as a non-beer-drinker.
Sounds like a great idea, just not my kind of thing.

They DO have things there other than beer. Just don't do like I did once and ask them if they have anything else besides Darmstadter

What, no Pungschdt (Pfungstädter) at the Darmstädter Braustübl?!?!

Don't feel bad. I used to drink in my younger days. And a bit too much, too. But these days? It's a lot if I have 1 beer in a month. I do like beer, don't get me wrong. But I just don't feel the need to drink quite as much as I did when I was in my party days. I have a 6-pack of Heineken on my balcony (nice and cold!) that's been sitting there for a month now. Haven't had a single one. But I do drink on occassion and I may even get a bit wild if the mood hits me
martinamr
Nov 28 2007, 1:30 pm
Watch out, with the weather these days those bottles (cans?) of Heineken could freeze and burst!
P.S. I don't feel bad (about not drinking).

Beer won't freeze until it's -30 C or below (I think!). I'm pretty sure I'll be safe for a few more weeks

Thats probably because it belongs to the Darmstätder Brewery and the Pfüngstadt one likewise! The Darmstadt one also has an offshoot in the centre of town plus they also own the Grohe Brewery. The Ratskeller also brews its own beer as well.

No offence, but the Darmstädter beer is pretty crap (one of them is palatable) and the atomsphere in the place is not that brilliant. This time of year you're going to have to reserve a table due to all the Christmas shennanigans going on.

So can you recommend a place with more atmostphere?
Years and years ago, like 15-16, I used to go to a place called Rumpelstilzchen. Does that still exist? (A minute later...) Google as my friend informed me that it does indeed still exist, at Dieburger Str. 72. Has anybody been there recently? Would that be an alternative?
Beer quality is of no importance, I'll be the one drinking Cola Light

I also live out in the boonies...Alsbach, down the B3 from Darmstadt.
Might pitch up at a Darmstadt meet if you get a date / venue sorted out...depends on the date though - I work in London a fair bit.
However, if any of you are feeling adventurous enough to venture out as far as Zwingenberg (also down the B3 about 15km south of Darmstadt) on Dec 18th to the Habanero cocktail bar ( habanero-zw.de ) in the Altstadt there will likely be a meetup of half a dozen Brit / US locals. It is subject to us getting a table booked as it will likely be busy that week.
Will stick a post on this site if it is on...will know in next few days.

Hi guys!
From what I remember the Braustubl was a fairly nice place. My husband works in Darmstadt and even though we actually live a "ways away" we would love to meet up sometime!
(We used to live in Seeheim-Jugenheim, and now that we have moved out into the country I actually miss Darmstadt terribly!)
@Martina: My husband's drink of choice is a "Coke on the rocks", so you wont be the only sober one!
Cheers!

Diet Coke for me too since I have to drive way back to the boonies when it's over

Correct, its still there. I sometimes go there after visiting the Dieburger Biergarten (just up the road) but the last time I went there we weren't to impressed with the service (we used to go to the Karaoke nights there as well.) How about the Riwwelmaddes? Run by an Indian/German/English woman (with English husband) which has good food and a nice atmosphere for a meet-up. Have a look at:
http://www.riwwelmaddes.de/. There used to be a ton of Brits going to Zum Landgrafen but there are now only 1 or 2 regulars but its not too bad although gone downhill over the years. Die Theke isn't too bad and has a good selection of beers but probably not for a meet-up. There are a lot of pubs in Darmstadt but finding the right one is not that easy.

QUOTE (darmstadt @ Nov 29 2007, 9:17 am)

But is the choice of pubs really the most important factor in this kind of meet-up? If a group of people with similar interests/backgrounds wants to get together for a chat, isn't the location secondary?
Unless we're such a bunch of boring f**ts that we're going to sit at the table in silence; in that case we'd better pick a place with a live band or something
I'm actually thinking a meet-up might be better in January, lots of places have reservations for X-mas parties in December, and most of us probably have the odd event or 5 that we have to attend this month, making finding a suitable date the next big hurdle.
Thoughts?
Martina
