January probably is a good idea for a meet up but what about a meet at the WeihnachtsMarkt?
FloridaBound
Wow!

I didn't realize it would be so difficult to try sit down over a drink (alcoholic or non) to share laughs and experiences. (I completely agree with Martina that the place is only secondary)

Since I only recently moved to the Darmstadt area, I think that I will continue to drive to Mannheim for the meetups there. The TT'rs there have setup a regular outing at Murphy's Law (a stones throw from the HB) on Tuesday's for trivia. It's a great time with many laughs (many people only drink water or soft drinks). There is also a meetup every other week (either on Wed or Thu) which the location varies; however since the christmas markts will open, there have been discussions on making the next meetup at one of these.

Since its apparent that we do have many TT'rs living in/near the Darmstadt area, it would be nice to try to schedule a meet-up here before the holidays begin. Especially for the experienced Darmstadters who may be able to give some holiday advice for the newby's like myself.

If anyone who knows this area does change there mind and feels that it is okay to meet-up somewhere for hopefully a few laughs, please post a place and time. I do feel that there may be a little interest still.

But is the choice of pubs really the most important factor in this kind of meet-up? If a group of people with similar interests/backgrounds wants to get together for a chat, isn't the location secondary?

Normally should be no problem but can you imagine going to somewhere like Gasttäte Wolf as a bunch of Brits with probably not too much German and then ordering soft drinks. This is a place which might look okay but is a sawdust on the floor, beer from the bottle (or each beer is in a different glass,) where the clientele stand on chairs to throw their darts and not a sausage speaks English. I don't think that would make for a convivial evening (I've been there with Germans who thought it was weird, personally I quite enjoyed it!) You know, you could always go to the English Club in Darmstadt: http://www.english-club-darmstadt.de/

(Upstairs in the Burren Bar ain't too bad actually and Gerry also has a second one in Aschaffenburg)

Oh, I see, we were talking past one another. I'm an American (even if my name suggests otherwise) and speak fluent German biggrin.gif

Martina

P.S. is it just me or are the Canadians and Americans more easy-going?
Odenwalder
It's not just you tongue.gif

Apologies. Its just that years ago there used to be around a 1000 Brits living in and around Darmstadt (there's only around 400-500 now) and you used to see a lot of them meet up in pubs, basically take it over with no respect for the locals causing, in some cases, an unhealthy attitude. Although I meet up with English speaking people occasionally, I tend, and have done for the past 20 years, go out with Germans primarily to integrate better with the community but quite often because its a darn site more fun.

Hi,

did you guys actually come to an agreement about the meetup in Griesheim / Darmstadt? I would be interested in meeting up and I might have a few suggestions for venues if your still up for it.

I'm actually german, but I did live in London for the last 2 1/2 years and I'm about to relocate back to Germany and would be very much interested in meeting up with englisch speaking people.

So anyone up for it?

Stefanie
martinamr
No, we didn't come to an agreement sad.gif

Please feel free to suggest a meeting time/place! There were definitely enough people interested, we just couldn't get our ducks in order which might have in part been due to pre-holiday stress.

I'm anxious to hear what you'll come up with smile.gif

Martina
Sunshine_75
It really depends how many show up, but I like Pasha in Griesheim (near St. Stephan station) it's a small Bistro and they have great turkish food.

For bigger crowds I have to think about it, haven't been around for quite a while smile.gif

I will be back end of March, so you might want to go ahead meeting up before that.

Looking forward to hear from you.

I'm up for a drink anywhere, as long as it's easily reachable by public transport. Some time in the beginning of February, 2-3 weeks from now? We can agree on the date, see who is in principle able to come, and then decide on a place.
SkipSpicy
Well whaddaya know

I just arrived in Germany last week and staying in Griesheim too. Would love to meet up with fellow English-speakers and get to know the lay of the land. I'm staying in a temporary apartment right next to "Peter's Pub" if it's any good.

PM me and we'll do dinner and drinks one evening.
martinamr
@SkipSpicy: we seem to be lacking a "leader" on this thread, i.e. somebody who is willing to set a time and place for a meet-up. So if you're so inclined, why don't you grab the reins and see what happens?

On another note, would anybody on this thread (or anybody else for that matter) be interested in daytime meetups? Evenings aren't really my thing, I have kids and really need to be at home doing the family thing in the evenings, but I'm really missing speaking English and thought maybe I could find others here on this forum.

I live in the Odenwald/Darmstadt/Bensheim area.

Martina

P.S. I would probably attend an evening meeting, though, just not necessarily on a regular basis.

Well, since I'm new to everything German, I guess the only excuse I'll have if I screw up is, "Seriously, Herr Polizei, I did not know any better!" tongue.gif

For the Griesheim folk, the place can be "Peter's Pub" (it's on the Rheinstrasse, and can be seen from space) and the date, 16th February (next weekend)...time, 6pm till late. I'll be the young-ish looking guy drinking on his own or chatting to someone in English. Dark hair, youthful face.

See you there. smile.gif
martinamr
Umm. How should I word this? Okay, I'll go for the direct approach: there *is* no Rheinstrasse in Griesheim unsure.gif

I assume you mean Peter's Pub, Hans-Karl-Platz Am Markt 1, just off of Wilhelm-Leuschner-Strasse.

Right?

Does that mean if you work for ESOC you'll be able to get there even quicker?

You're absolutely right, it's actually Wilhelm-Leuschner-Strasse (which connects to Rheinstrasse in Darmstadt) smile.gif
martinamr
Okay, decision made: I will be there. Along with my (German) husband.

Anybody else? Odenwalder, will you and your wife join us?

<< I'll be the young-ish looking guy drinking on his own or chatting to someone in English. Dark hair, youthful face. >>
Then I guess I'll be the mid-30's lady, dark hair, skinny face wink.gif

Martina
Odenwalder
I may be there but I seriously doubt the wife will.
Elaleya
to bad i already go to the wiesbaden meeting, but if something changes i will let you guys ´know

Let me guess: "was soll ich auf einem Ami-Treffen"?

Martina
Odenwalder
No no... that would require actual communication.
martinamr
Oh. I'm sorry to hear that sad.gif But communication's a 2-way street, grab the initiative and just ask her if she'd be interested.

Martina
FloridaBound
Definitely, count me in!
martinamr
Great! biggrin.gif

So far we've got:
  • SkipSpicy

I'd love to come, but I'm away next weekend. Next time, hopefully.
martinamr
Hmm, no further "sign-ups" yet.

Come on, ladies, so far I'm going to be the only female in attendance unsure.gif !!

Martina
Odenwalder
Are ya scared yet? tongue.gif

Who knows, I may decide to invite my wife now that we're all "lovey dovey" again. But that's a HUGE maybe. I'd prefer to enjoy an English speaking night out with as little German as possible.
martinamr
Shivering in my boots wink.gif

Good news on the lovey dovey! biggrin.gif

Very true, Odenwalder...it's important to delve into the culture, but it's nice to go back to your mother tongue now and again. Plus, there's beer involved, yay tongue.gif

Elaleya

darmstadt
I might be able to come along but I'll be leaving the Alte Kanzlei (watching football and general natter) at around that time so might be going on to somewhere in town afterwards. I shall do my best, if not, everyone have a good time.
martinamr
@DanHessen: I know, but right now he's moaning "you'd rather be with a bunch of strangers than me" and would probably grin and bear it, tag along to the meeting, and then be in agony for the following few days wacko.gif

I guess I'll decide last minute what I'll do.

Martina

P.S. SkipSpicy: all of my girlfriends are 40-ish married mothers...
DanHessen
Anyone know what happened to the OP of this thread?
martinamr
Dan, I PM'ed her (last week I believe) and didn't get a response, but we had been in touch back in December and she was about to start a German class, so I assume she's just spending less time online.
AshleyM
So, what exactly is the exact street name and building number of this place? It was a bit vague-ish. (sorry, my GPS doesn't do "vague-ish"!)

If I can organize a "jail-break" for myself tommorrow night, I will be there!
