Arty and musician neighborhoods of Berlin

Advice on districts where other artists live

Does anyone know where the artists tend to live in Berlin? Are any particular neighborhoods well-known as housing artists? Are there any resources to figure out where this sort of demographic hangs out?
TobyG.
successful artists:
charlottenburg-wilmersdorf around kurfürstendamm and pariser straße or around lietzensee: the more conservative bunch
mitte around auguststraße: the famous artists with main appartments somewhere else around the world
schöneberg around winterfeldtplatz/goltzstraße, kreuzberg around Bergmannstraße: the hippie/eco-artist
kreuzberg around oranienstraße and schlesisches tor, friedrichshain near boxhagener platz or rigaer straße: the left-wing, dissident, subculture artists

unsuccessful (underground) or too successful (wanting to be underground again) artists:
wedding (somewhere between nauener platz and koloniestraße) and neukölln (wissmannstraße, schillerpromenade or around the western part of weisestraße and friedelstr).

I forgot Prenzlauer Berg. wanna- and gonna-be artists everywhere around kastanienallee and helmholtzplatz.

And the musicians? particularly classical musicians (are they mostly around UdK and Hanns Eisler?) and "world music" musicians, though knowing about all the rest is really interesting to me too.

Are you a classical musician, solagratia? I'm a musician also planning to move to Berlin in January or February, so thanks for your post.

Surely the thanks should go to TobyG. for his in-depth analysis of artists' residential patterns? Give the man a pat on the back!

TobyG that was hot. Tell us about where the hip and hoppers live. I hear Kreuzberg but Sido keeps throwing out Reinickendorf!
TobyG.
real berlin hip hoppers reside of course in spandau, though some argue, this is not berlin anymore...

Thanks for the info, TobyG.

Hey there AlbanBerg, yeah, I am a classical musician - what do you play? Here´s my website: www.gratiaspiele.net What are you up to in Berlin?
solagratia
Where do the musicians live in Berlin? What are the most popular kinds of music in the city? How would the city be divided up in terms of music makers, their sorts of music, where they make it, and where they live?

Mostly I´m curious about where the classical, jazz, and "world music" musicians live and perform, but any info is appreciated ...

I'm an opera singer and I'm moving to Berlin in January. I'll be living in Kreuzberg because I found a cheap sublet...hope it doesn't suck! It looks like it will be a fun neighborhood.

Solagratia, I think it's similar to my artist districts characterization (don't take it TOO seriously wink.gif ). I guess most classical and jazz musicians over 40 prefer to live in some of the decent, more settled quarters like Charlottenburg and Schöneberg, the younger ones in Prenzlauer Berg and the wilder ones in Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg.
Jazzclubs are located mainly in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, some can be found in Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain (the two most alternative districts), Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte.

There are so many artists, musicians and actors in Berlin that you can't swing your purse without bumping one!

My building in Charlottenburg has 3 professional musicians and they practice up to 6 hours a day (I think this is their legal right "wohnrecht" or "mietreht")

There are also 2 amateur musicians who are allowed to practice up to 3 hours per day. On many days I feel like I am living in a concert hall wink.gif

I'm also a classical singer in Berlin. I met most of my singer friends over at www.nfcs.net (new forum for classical singers) in the Europe forum. A lot of the people who post there are in Berlin. I (and others) occasionally organize singer get-togethers there. I also help run a small but fast-growing opera company, Berlin International Opera (www.berlininternationalopera.com).

Any improvisers around? I'm a classically trained musician but are into instant composition and contact improvisation. Berlin.

Hi guys thanks for reading this and any help you can give.

I am a musician in an indie band and part time graphic designer and my wife is a fashion designer. We are looking to buy a place in Berlin. Somewhere that is an arty district that we can also bring up a child in. We havent got a kid yet but we want to move somewhere thats as central as poss while being creative, arty and safe.

At the moment we are living in London, in the past years we have lived in Brick Lane, Shoreditch, Hackney, Old Street, Hoxton etc so thats the sort of place we want to find there. If there's a district with loads of musicians etc and cafés, bars, small (cheap) restaurants etc. then that would be amazing.

To be honest, we're growing up and are tired of living in shithole areas. But appreciate creativity districts like shoreditch in london, east village in new york, södermalm in stockholm etc.

Would you be able to recommend any areas in Berlin that are as central as possible that suit the description.

Is there an area that has warehouses to live in? I havent seen any.

Thanks so much.

Good areas to live in Berlin

Mitte / Prenzlauer Berg sounds your up of tea. I would say Kreuzberg but it isn't as child and famly friendly. You might like the area around the Kastanienallee and Schonhauser Allee.
