The Union Flag seen flying upside down

At "Peek & Cloppenburg" in Düsseldorf

Peek & Cloppenburg, Düsseldorf have a Union Flag in their first floor window which is upside down java script:void(0);
laugh. Has anyone else noticed this? I have emailed to ask them to correct it. Is it the same in other cities?

I would think that 99% of the British, including me, wouldn't know what was upside down and what isn't. It's not like it's really obvious like, say the stars and stripes.
cheshirecat
I am suprised that you think that 99% of Brits wouldn't know which way is up!
osmachar
Maybe their English wasn't good enough to understand the sign 'this side up'.

I'm surprised that you don't! wink.gif so educate me, and most of Britain , how do you tell?
cheshirecat
The St Andrews flag has prominence over St Patricks (because Scotland were in Union first) - hence top left white diagonal should be on top. Just visualise snow on a sloping roof...
Allershausen
If I turn this flag upside down it will look exactly the same I think. Could it be that you mean inside out?
Guy
If you turn it upside down (ie. mirror about its horizontal axis, not rotate), St. Patrick's cross is in the wrong place.

But then again, if you just look at the flag from the 'wrong' side, you get the same effect. I guess it depends where the flagpole is in that case.

Would I notice the difference? Probably not.
cheshirecat
Yes they have a mirror image up.

I bet they ordered a sticker to be used on the window & didn't realise that it would effect the outcome! :-)
Owain Glyndwr
on the Union Flag above, if the flagpole were on the left, the flag would be correct, if the flagpole were on the right, it would be incorrect or upside down.
cruiser
Stuff the 'Union' flag, whichever way up!

This is the only flag that means anything to me ...
Schotte
I cant believe people wouldnt notice if the flag was upside down! i would notice immediately. isnt it glaringly obvious the thicker white bit on the top left diagonal?
isnt this the first thing you see...???

ive always been curious as to why the blue is darker in the union flag than it is in the st andrews flag, anyone know? i think it is more pleasing to the eye being darker, but thats no reason to make it darker for the sake of a flag.

So if you are standing on the wrong side of the flag if it's flying.. Are you wrong or is the flag wrong?

Likewise, maybe the people in the shop see it as correct as it's correct when they look at it from in the shop?
Rilana
why does P&C Düsseldorf have the union jack up anyway?
Schotte
Its not the uníon jack unless its on a ship!!!

thats a damn good point Tom17, like when yank soldiers have their flag on their right arm the stars are always in the top right corner eh?

Maybe it's "in" right now. Karstadt has had a big We're So British type display up for a while now, complete with photos of German people attempting to look prim while wearing acrylic knitwear meant to look woolen.

All rather odd...

B**ger, everyone always called it a Union Jack where I grew up...and there definitely weren't so many ships around in the East End...obviously something they forgot to teach us (along with most things!!) darn, just goes to show that you learn something new everyday. laugh.gif
Jeeves
As Mr Daft's graphic shows, it's not a question of left and right but this

Wrong and Right

the wink means u are joking right? smile.gif

the one on the left is correct if its been blown left to right by the wind smile.gif
Jeeves
no, he is actually right and right
Schotte
not really, cos the one on the left would be wrong if the flag was flush to the pole...?
Schotte
ah yes, very clever what you did there... smile.gif

I've always know it to be the butchers apron. dry.gif

Why? I hate such attitudes. We colonised the world with the help of a few machine guns thats all. No need to go all middle class PC about it. And hell if we hadn't done it the French would have!
Mik Dickinson
Makes you proud to be British does it not??? dry.gif
gideon
I see no reason why I should be ashamed about it to be honest. We did nothing nobody else wasnt doing at the time.
Schotte
Makes me proud I must say. Its just Hollywood that portrays us to be bad! I cant see why anyone would be not proud to be British.

Rule Britannia.

(Disclaimer: doesnt mean I will cheer on the Lions if they arent playing a Scot wink.gif)
gideon
Crikey. I''m agreeing with Schotte.

(apart from the Lions bit)

Nothing worse than this constant lets all say sorry for xyz rubbish. Hell I'm proud of our history, made mistakes yes, but at least we saved the world out of a fair few tightspots.

To all non-Brits.

Sorry, if this sounds jingoistic, but your countries would have done just the same if you'd have had the technological advantages available to you at the time. We just got there first a few times. Oh and next time someone comes along exchanging mirrors and beads for the mineral rights of your country wise up. ;-)
Schotte
Don't pretend you don't almost always agree with me Gideon. You just dont like admitting admitting it biggrin.gif

The world would be a much worse place without British involvement back in the old days. Fact. Plus British accents are "cool". Apparently.

Not a cat in hell's chance current Brits could have achieved so much, thats the sad thing. Without a doubt the era of "punching far above our weight" has long gone. The Health & Safety Executive would have prohibited everything for a start. Bah.

And at least we don't do the "I'm ashamed of my country" guff that some nations not a million miles away do. rolleyes.gif
Owain Glyndwr
What do these two flags have in common?

(edit sorry for the colours on the second one, bad version)
gideon
Only two flags that are a cool fashion statement?

Schootte, Brits are cool. Fact.

What Nationalists and devolutionists and sepratists and other ists all don't realise is that Britain is so cool, breaking it up would reduce is to the importance of Austria. Yep we argue all the time, But we are the first ever European Union. This new imposter thingie in Brussels should take a leaf out of our book if you ask me.

In fact the whole Commonwealth is cool (I'm including Ireland in this one). I bet americans are really jealous of us when it comes down to our chummy family of interbred mongrels. We invent sports and other people play them!

The only thing that lets us down is the Irish having a really boring flag.
Owain Glyndwr
errr nope.

(Brazilian flag is seen on lots of clothes which the Germans find cool)
Schotte
is it something to do with the fact that the 50 stars are for the states, the Union flag is made up of 3 nations... something along these lines. cant think of another flag that has such meaning, most seem random colours.
Schotte
the annoying git who i talk about in the vent just walked by and said "oh american flag".

FUCK OFF NOSY BASTARD IF YOU CAN STILL SEE MY SCREEN dry.gif
Owain Glyndwr
oops sorry I posted the wrong flag. I meant these two:

Schotte
they used to occupy that top corner of the US flag?

hehe im not sure if that is true but i think the joke ones with the union flag in the stars and stripes is cool. smile.gif
Jeeves
neither of them has a dragon on it?
Owain Glyndwr
nope, Schotte, the flag with the Union flag in the corner was never an official US flag.

well, technically Jeeves is correct but not the answer i am looking for.

Agreed but even that flag has been called by Ken Maginnis of the more moderate Ulster Unionist Party "the flag of the IRA" - uh then he tossed it into the Thames.
gideon
come on OG, tell us...
Schotte
oh come on OG!!! answer!
Owain Glyndwr
when flown on ships both flags are officially known as the "Union Jack".

The version shown above with the stars was the official Jack of the US Navy until 2002 and is still the official Jack of the US Coastguard. It is called the Union Jack because the blue corner with the Stars in the US flag is also officially called "the Union". Any flag flown on the rear flagpole of a ship is called a "Jack", hence "Union Jack"

Owain Glyndwr, as the last Welsh Prince of Wales, this is the only flag you should be interested in! ...
