Men's haircut terminology in German

Hey

The time has come for my first haircut in Germany and I'm slightly terrified at the prospect. Was thinking of just getting it shaved short but still have some left if u understand. Don't want to go for the skinhead look lol. Will they know what I'm on about if I ask for a number 3?! I'm not sure if these things are international. Also I'm having trouble finding the word for clippers, can anyone help? I apologise for the random nature of this but it would save embarrassment!

Take a picture of what you want and show it to the person cutting your hair. They will understand.

They generally do it in mm in units of 3 rather than the blade 1-4, so you can go into any barbers/hair-dressers and ask for a 3, 6, 9 or 12 and you'll be sorted.

Point at the catalogues with haircuts and find the one you want (approximately). Do not say "Schneiden und Blasen, bitte!" as one Scotsman once did. Schneiden und Föhnen is what you would want - cut and blow dry.

Depends on who is cutting the hair don't it?

If you're just gonna get clippered, I'd recommend going to Kaufhof or the like and buying yourself a set of clippers for €15...free haircuts there on in.

I've been in Würzburg a month and putting off going for fear of being scalped!!

I just want no. 1 (neck n sides) and a bit of a trim off the top.

But what do I ask for!!!?

Thanks for your help everyone. In response to the above, what's already been said is true regarding the numbers corresponding to millimetres. She was very patient when I explained I was foreign and was quite nice, was only 8 euro too, bargain!

I've been here six weeks now and am well overdue a haircut...but find the whole prospect pretty daunting. Although I can speak reasonable german, I just donÄt know what to ask for.

Can anyone give me a clue as to what to ask for?

I need to know what the equivalent of a no.1 is. just want it clippered round the sides and about half off the top cut with scissors.

Either I wait till xmas by which time I'll have a fully fledged mullet...or risk getting scalped. Help!

Errrrrm just go in a barbers and tell em what you want innit.

Drei millimetre an die Seiten, ungefähr die hälfte oben weg mit scheren.

Go look for out for a Turkish barbers, will cost you about 8 yoyos for a lovely new barnet.

Bring a picture and point to it. "Das bitte. Danke." You'll be fine.

Just say "glat bitte" and make like a hair cutting motion with your hands.

Or simply peel a boiled egg and hold it up next to your skull.
